One of the major realizations that I have had over the past two years as AFAP President and CEO is that Africa's farmers are far too dependent on an ever changing Africanǰ climate for rain with which they can plant seeds and sometimes use fertilizer, crop protection and other yield enhancing products and technologies. This really is no way to succeed as a commercial farmer. What caught my eye last year to address this was the promise of drip irrigation. Widely used in many arid parts of the world, but almost non-existent in most parts of Africa. Well through our Ghana Country Team, last month during our Hub Agro-Dealer Conference and the last week while I was on mission in Ghana, I was able to meet representatives of Interplast Limited, a 55 year old Lebanese-Ghanaian company that manufacturers ( among other things) drip irrigation kits (The InGreen Drip Kit). Hello my new best friend!🤗 See www.interplast.com. Everything you need, in a box...made in Africa...for Africa. This was quite exciting...I see so much potential for our hub agro-dealers to become distributors and installers of these systems...with assistance from our youth community based advisors or CBAs). Soon we will be reporting on the number of farmers under irrigation in the communities served by hubs with whom we work. This relatively easy to install and modestly priced technology can significantly expand the produce yield from a square hectare of farmland...and growing when one wants to and not just when one can also leads to the farmer having more available income to purchase seed, fertilizer and other crop protection products. The enhanced yield also makes the farmer better able to be a reliable grower for off takers and also inspires thoughts about processing nearer to the farm gate. Literally, it's a game changer! Cannot wait to start these promotions.
