Last week, the Organisation of Eastern and Southern Africa Insurers, a supporting institution of the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), hosted its 46th Annual Conference and General Assembly. This event reaffirmed OESAI's unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable practices within the insurance industry. Throughout the conference, we engaged in pivotal discussions on the pressing challenges of our time. Sessions delved into the complexities of doing business in an era of global uncertainty, the crucial role of sustainable insurance in mitigating unprecedented risks, the integration of ESG factors into insurance products and services, and the implications of the evolving geopolitical landscape in Africa for reinsurers. The conference provided a valuable platform for industry leaders to exchange ideas and underscore the urgency of embedding sustainable practices across our sector. A particular highlight was the compelling keynote from Abel Sakhau, Chief Sustainability Officer at Sanlam, whose call to action resonated deeply. His message was a powerful reminder of the need for resilience and transformative change within the African insurance industry. We were also thrilled to welcome around 15 new signatories to The Nairobi Declaration on Sustainable Insurance, a testament to the growing momentum of PSI’s regional networks. These regional networks are instrumental in driving the sustainable insurance agenda forward, enabling regional markets to chart their paths while receiving support from PSI in their sustainability journeys. Our key objectives for the region include implementing robust ESG strategies and risk management frameworks tailored to the African context, needs and goals, aligning insurance portfolios with the SDGs backed by credible impact metrics, and positioning African insurers as global leaders in sustainable insurance.
