Fan-Run Activities

A few fans are running activities at and around the convention.  These activities are not part of the official event or run by the Glasgow 2024 team, but details are shared below for your convenience.

Hillwalking trip to the Arrochar Alps, Tues 6 August

Barbara James, one of our Team Info volunteers, will be leading an expedition into the Scottish Highlands north of Glasgow to climb the Cobbler (Ben Arthur) from Arrochar. The route will be similar to this one.

Full details will be provided to those participating, but you will need to be ready to leave central Glasgow around 8:45 a.m., returning by 6 p.m., possibly earlier.

Route information, difficulty and equipment: This is a serious mountain ascent (the summit is at 884m, and the route starts at sea level), covering about 10 miles (16km) and over 1000m ascent.  While there are clearly marked paths, expect rough terrain underfoot throughout. Given all this, it is a trip for experienced hillwalkers who are fit enough for the mountains, not novices to this kind of walk.  Minimum equipment to be worn/carried includes walking boots, waterproof jacket, spare insulation layer, hat and sufficient food and water for the day.  A GPX file of the route is available on request from the organiser.

Costs: The walk is free. There will be costs for the transport there and back (buses or trains depending on timing).

Ages: Children aged 8 and up are welcome if suitably experienced. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Accessibility:  This is a challenging mountain climb, and is unsuitable for anyone with restricted mobility.

Other things to know:  Note that numbers are limited to ensure a manageable group size on the hills.  Given the uncertainties of Scottish weather, if there is a poor forecast this trip may be cancelled at short notice.

Organiser Contact Information: If you are interested please contact Barbara at [email protected] to discuss further.

Glasgow Pub Crawls (Fri 9, Sat 10, and Sun 11 August)

Scottish local Tom Bladon would like to introduce fans to a few of his favourite hostelries near the convention site. He says,

“Join me (Tom) on a trip to some Glasgow pubs, which pubs we go to, is up to you. Do you want to try whiskies or some Scottish ales? Perhaps we can stop off and go for a curry (did you know that Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow?).”

Meet each day at the Tours Meeting point in Hall 4 at 7 p.m.

Ages: Due to Scottish licensing laws, these trips are only suitable for those aged 18 and older. Those under 25 should carry photo ID.
