Royal Troon’s Old Course – site of the 2024 British Open Championship – began in 1878 as a five-hole layout that was expanded to 18 holes by 1888.
In Troon on the west coast of Scotland, the course originally was designed by George Strath and Willie Fernie, then renovated before the 1923 British Open by five-time Open champion James Braid. The course has been modified and lengthened several times since, but for the most part Braid’s layout has stood the test of time. This week’s tournament will be the 10th Open for Troon.
Royal Troon’s Old Course ranks No. 23 on the Golfweek’s Best list of top classic courses in Great Britain and Ireland, and it’s No. 55 on the list of all courses outside the U.S.
