Harford County Schools Change Weather Decision For Wednesday Classes

HARFORD COUNTY, MD - Harford County Public Schools will be closed Wednesday because of ongoing flooding. The school system had originally planned to open two hours late, but it called off Wednesday classes around 6:30 a.m.

"This decision is a result of flooding and consequent road closures preventing bus access to students and to buildings throughout the county," HCPS said on Facebook, noting that essential employees should await further details from their supervisor.

HCPS also announced Monday that schools would close three hours early on Tuesday.

Heavy rain and wind slammed Maryland on Tuesday and into the night.

The storm flooded low-lying areas and brought storm surges of 4 to 5 feet. Wind gusts up to 50 mph were expected.

The site PowerOutage.US said 34,892 Maryland customers were offline at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, but the situation improved overnight.

The state had 17,220 power outages as of 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management reported.

The outages were concentrated in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties.

Harford County escaped the brunt of the outages, as 152 customers were without electricity at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday.
