This episode gives an in-depth insight into healthcare digitalization in Portugal. Cátia Sousa Pinto, Head of Global Digital Health and International Affairs at SPMS - shared services of ministry of health of Portugal talked about healthcare digitalization in Portugal, European Health Data Space (EHDS), patient data and more.
Key Points Summary
Portugal's Digital Health Leadership: Portugal has been a leader in digital health within Europe, with early advancements like the creation of a national eHealth agency (SPMS) over a decade ago.
SPMS Role: SPMS plays a dual role, not only regulating but also developing and maintaining ICT solutions for Portugal's healthcare system. This centralization helps prevent fragmentation and ensures interoperability.
European Health Data Space (EHDS): EHDS is the EU's regulatory framework for cross-border health data sharing, building on initiatives like MyHealth@EU. The goal is to allow seamless healthcare across Europe, where any EU citizen can access healthcare in other countries as if they were at home.
My Health at EU: A foundational initiative that enables cross-border exchange of health data like patient summaries and e-prescriptions between EU countries.
Patient Data: Catia emphasized the importance of patients controlling their health data and being able to share it across healthcare providers. This includes e-prescriptions, laboratory results, and, eventually, medical images.
Portugal's National Electronic Health Record: A key project for the country is the creation of a unified electronic health record system, allowing citizens to access all of their health data, both public and private, from a single source.
Use of EU Funding: Portugal has allocated €300 million from the EU's recovery funds for digital health transformation, focusing on infrastructure, citizen-centric services, and reducing the burden on healthcare professionals.
Challenges and Future Outlook: The integration of digital health into national governance and improving interoperability between systems remain ongoing challenges. Katia stressed the importance of moving towards real-time, structured health data to improve future healthcare outcomes.

In this episode of The TRU Leader Podcast, Tracy and Michelle delves into the national crisis of burnout and mental health issues in the workplace, citing a 2022 US Surgeon General report and a Microsoft survey showing high levels of burnout among managers. The pandemic has shifted expectations around work-life balance, with workers seeking more support to avoid overwork. The discussion highlights the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) environment’s demands on staff and the need for empathetic leadership. Traditional leadership norms often involve overworking and sacrificing personal time, which can lead to burnout. Personal anecdotes illustrate the detrimental effects of such norms, emphasizing the need for new leadership practices that prioritize well-being.
The podcast advocates for changing leadership norms to prevent burnout by fostering healthy work cultures and effective priority management. Leaders are encouraged to balance professional and personal lives, leveraging the tension between opposing forces like activity and rest. It stresses the importance of shifting limiting beliefs to more empowering ones and redefining success to include balance and fulfillment. Habit formation, supported by tools like fitness trackers and morning routines, is suggested to make these new norms sustainable.
Tracy and Michelle invite listeners to join their FREE webinar “From Stress to Success, The Formula for Leaders to Excel Professionally and Personally” to help leaders adopt these new norms. Archelle shares her personal story about the journey as a caregiver for her mother, Tina, who recently passed away. Guest host Cathy Wurzer leads the conversation, where they discuss the tough decisions and emotional challenges that come with caring for aging loved ones. Archelle talks about navigating the balance between honoring a loved one’s wishes and ensuring their safety and highlighting the difficult but loving decision to sometimes say "no" for their well-being.
Key Takeaways
Look for early, subtle changes in personality and decision-making. Use this moment to quietly but actively start putting plans in place for your loved one and start checking in on them more frequently.
Make sure that healthcare power of attorney documents are signed and accessible. Instead of naming co-decision-makers, it's best to designate a single individual as the primary with an alternate in case the primary is unavailable. This helps avoid delays and complexities in making urgent care decisions.
Use technology to help keep your loved one safe. Here's a list of ideas with links:
Amazon's Echo Show: This has all the features of a traditional Alexa and has the added benefit of video. This let me "drop in" to see my mom and talk to her without requiring that she know how to use the technology.
Blink Mini-Cameras: Buy multiple devices and put them in strategic locations. Make sure to buy the data storage plan so that you can review and store clips.
Medical/Safety Alert systems can include a pendant or a smart watch.
Have realistic conversations about "aging in place". Discuss the medical, financial, physical and social implications for everyone who is impacted: the aging individual as well as the caregiver(s) who assumes responsibility. Everyone's quality of life matters in this equation.
Process for identifying an assisted living:
Week 1: Do online research to identify all the facilities in the area. Read independent reviews.
Week 2: Create a list of important criteria and conduct phone interviews.
Week 3: Visit 4-6 locations.
Week 4: Schedule an extended visit and have a meal at 1-2 locations that seem like the best fit.

September 3, 2024: Dr. Zafar Chaudry, SVP and CDIO of Seattle Children’s, interviews Majdi Daher, Founder of Denali Advanced Integration, to explore the evolving dynamics between healthcare providers and payers, delving into the challenges that technology introduces in an already complex system. How do providers balance innovation with the necessity of cost-cutting? Can the healthcare industry truly afford to adopt AI when even basic technology investments are a struggle? Has technology improved patient outcomes, or has it merely driven costs higher?
