Ren Faire

Ren Faire (HBO)

Brendan’s Alternate Tagline for Ren Faire:

It’s like Succession but nerdy.

Quick synopsis:

The story of a succession battle for the control of the Texas Renaissance Festival.

Fact for Non-History People:

The Texas Renaissance Festival draws about 500,000 people per year.

Fact for History Nerds:

The festival itself takes up over 55 acres.

My Take on Ren Faire:

Let’s get this out of the way. Ren Faire is weird. The people are weird. The storytelling is weird. There are sections of it which are clearly staged such as dream sequences. At the same time, there are also sections which are clearly real because this festival does exist and the people on the documentary do get promoted and fired in real life. Also, I can’t imagine some of the most cringe-inducing moments would be scripted because no person in their right mind would do that for a paycheck using their real name.

For instance, George, the owner of the festival, is one of the most loathsome individuals I have ever seen on a non-true crime documentary. Think of the Office’s Michael Scott but take away any endearing characteristics. Oh, he also goes on dates during the documentary with women he met on sugar daddy sites. Meanwhile, his two underlings who are vying for control as George nears retirement are not detestable, but they provide plenty of cringe.

This will not be for everyone. I do recommend giving episode 1 a try and see what you think.

Verdict:

Bizarre. Weird. Cringe. You should watch! Watch it here!
