The New Salt Lake City International Airport is the first new hub airport built in the U.S. in the 21st century. The HOK-designed airport includes a 909,000-sq.-ft. terminal, two new, dual-sided concourses and a 3,600-vehicle parking garage. The innovative design elevates the traveler experience and reflects Utah’s stunning landscapes. The Canyon, a wavy sculptural piece on the walls of the terminal atrium, mimics Utah’s dramatic red-rock canyons, alpine peaks and moving water. Local restaurants in the terminal highlight Utah’s dining scene. With the airport’s location in an active seismic zone and extreme weather depending on the time of year, creating a resilient design was important. HOK’s structural engineering team ensured the buildings meet rigorous earthquake safety standards. The project achieved LEED Gold certification, with sustainable design strategies including high-performance glazing, daylighting, energy-efficient systems, and an efficient configuration of terminal and gate locations that reduces fuel use and aircraft emissions. Learn more from HOK’s Matthew Needham and Claire Moore about the project in ASCE’s Civil Engineering magazine: https://lnkd.in/gPbss9P4 📸 Bruce Damonte Photography

“Our urban fabric is full of important buildings, the quality tends to be high and they have been built to last. Churches aside, not many historic buildings today are still in the use they were designed for, but we can find a new use for that quality and robustness.” HOK’s David Weatherhead shares the growing trend of retrofitting historic buildings and while balancing building sustainability goals in FX and Design Curial. With the UK government targeting net zero by 2050, heritage buildings have an important role to play in the initiative. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ghVtybKW

😍 We love seeing the White & Case office highlighted in Jeffrey Steele’s Forbes article on law office design! The contemporary office design maximizes flexibility and focuses on health and wellness of its occupants. Luxurious amenities include a coffee bar, fitness center, wellness center, library, IT “genius bar” and restaurant-style dining. Abundant windows fill the spaces with natural light and provide scenic views of Manhattan. HOK led the design of amenity floors and HYL Architecture designed office practice floors. Pentagram collaborated on the environmental graphics. Great to see HOK’s Keith Hui on the cover of ACE Update magazine all about airport design! Airports act as mini cities and designing them can be complex. Keith shares how HOK collaborates with airport clients to focus on their current and future needs to create flexible, sustainable and beautiful airport designs. The designs should also create a strong sense of place, like the exposed timber used within the Concourse D Annex at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, reminiscent of the Pacific Northwest, or the ‘OKConnected’ mosaic at the Will Rogers World Airport Terminal Expansion in Oklahoma. Keith also discusses HOK’s high-performance, transformative airport designs, like the new energy-efficient passenger terminal at Salt Lake City International Airport, and the unique phasing and design of LaGuardia Airport’s new Terminal B that slashed the building schedule by almost two years and saved millions of dollars.
