【Melo supports World Vision’s Secondhand Book Charity Sale 2024】 Melo members Nicole Hui, Julius Choy, Shirley Yao, Chloe Cheung, Athena Yeung, Yanice So, Joy Ng, Shahman Ali and Yat Yin Chan volunteered for World Vision’s Secondhand Book Charity Sale on July 21, 2024! The funds raised will support local programs for grass-roots children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and their families in Hong Kong. It’s a wonderful way to give back to the community while also promoting sustainability ♻️. World Vision Hong Kong recent Used Book Recycling Campaign at Citywalk 2 in Tsuen Wan (July 12-22, 2024) raised funds to support local programs such as play therapy, counseling, community inclusion festivals, and more - all designed to create an environment that enables SEN children to learn and thrive, while promoting social inclusion. “As a volunteer, I’m grateful to see people selecting books 📚 they’re excited to read, giving old volumes new life. Every recycled book also helps raise vital funds for SEN education programs in our community. These kids deserve every chance to learn and thrive, and your donated books can make a real difference. Nicole Hui (Melo Social Member Volunteer) #projectmelo #worldvisionhk

At the recently concluded Project Melo Melofest Social Challenge 2024, our members pitched an idea that could positively transform marine biodiversity in Hong Kong. Partnering with George Hongchoy, CEO of Link REIT, and his sustainability team, our founding members Adella Budianto, Christie Lai, CEP®, Ekaterina Drozdova, and Justin Yeung as team IMPACT41 spent four months developing and refining a pitch for a nature-based solution utilizing seaweed. IMPACT41 was honored with the UBS Award sponsored by the UBS Optimus Foundation as well as the Most Popular Team award - but we are only just getting started! 🌊Reversing Marine Biodiversity Loss Through Nature-based Solution (NbS) The ocean is home to over 2 million species and supplies over 50% of the earth’s oxygen from photosynthesis, but it is now in crisis. According to the U.N., it's estimated that over 33% of global fish stocks are overexploited, while plastic waste and nutrient runoff have created vast "dead zones" devoid of life. Addressing this crisis requires innovative, nature-based solutions (NbS). One promising approach is using seaweed-based systems to restore marine habitats and support multi-trophic level species. Seaweed not only absorbs excess nutrients and filters water but also provides critical nursery grounds and food sources for a diversity of marine life. By cultivating native seaweed species, we can rebuild the foundation of healthy, resilient ocean ecosystems. Our team's award-winning proposal leverages this concept, outlining a scalable, community-based model for seaweed restoration. With continued research, development, and cross-sector collaboration, nature-based solutions like this can be a powerful tool in the fight to preserve our blue planet. Heartfelt gratitude to the judges, audience, and everyone who recognised the value of the proposed solution. A shoutout also goes to the other impressive teams - MetaGreen, Beyond The Roof, and Team Lagom - for their tremendous efforts. If you were present at Melofest 2024 or would like to learn more about IMPACT41's solution, we are eager to connect and explore opportunities to further develop this idea. Complex problems often require simple yet effective solutions. Are you ready to dive in and create impact with IMPACT41? For the One World, One Purpose, and One Future we all share.
