About us

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was first formed by a group of volunteers in 1903 and became active in 1921. Although we are the first charity in Hong Kong to deal with all aspects of animal welfare, we obtain around only 1% of our funding from the government. The rest of our funding comes from the generosity of the general public, for which we are extremely grateful. It is a constant challenge to raise the funds necessary to continue our work. We believe that animals are living creatures which like humans, are able to feel pain, hunger and thirst. We should not inflict any suffering upon our fellow creatures just because they can't speak. Our Mission "To promote kindness to animals, to protect their health and welfare, to prevent cruelty and through education, to inspire in the community a deep respect for life so that all living creatures may live together in harmony." Our Aims "To promote kindness and to confront and prevent cruelty to animals."

The SPCA has made its inaugural presence at the HSBC Summer Fair, held at Central and Olympics HQ on 25 and 27 June. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Total Loyalty Company for their generous invitation to be the exclusive pet supply vendor at the event. With over 16,000 HSBC staff in attendance, our SPCA stall offered great deals for pet goodies and exclusive Hello Kitty! Hello SPCA! merchandise. We were thrilled to meet many animal lovers including adopters from the SCPA. Together, we raised over HK$26,000 for our rescue animals and welfare initiatives. Pets are one of the best mental wellness companions. If you are looking for innovative ways to engage and inspire your employees, we invite you to consider partnering with the SPCA. We have a range of animal welfare talks and events designed for employee engagement and we can tailor programmes to suit your company's needs. What’s a better way to make your employee smile whilst helping animals in need! To host one of your first animal welfare events at work, drop us a note to chat more [email protected]. #SPCA #SPCAHK #EmployeeEngagement #Fundraising #AnimalWelfare

At the SPCA, we are grateful for the unwavering support of our dedicated partners who contribute to animal welfare in Hong Kong in their own unique ways. We deeply appreciate the collective efforts made through group volunteer services and various fundraising initiatives aimed at helping our rescue animals.   We want to thank The Executive Centre for organising the impactful fundraising campaign, "Give Back With Every Cup." From 2 July to 30 August, TEC Members are invited to visit TEC Barista Bars and with every purchase from the special seasonal drink menu, TEC will generously donate 100% of the proceeds to support the SPCA. We are grateful for Chelsea Perino and Vivian Au’s team and the TEC’s community support in animal welfare.   We believe in the power of creativity, and we encourage you to share any innovative fundraising ideas you may have for the SPCA. Feel free to drop us a note at [email protected]. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of animals in need.   #SPCA #SPCAHK #Fundraising

However, the journey of providing this support begins before we bring a pet into our homes. From veterinary care, their welfare, animal psychology, to considering the ethical aspects of buying or adopting, being a pet owner entails a myriad of significant responsibilities. Join our Chief Veterinary Surgeon, Dr Jane Gray, and Community Director, Jenmon Y., on 17 July (Wednesday) for an insight-filled session featuring a panel of esteemed pet experts at 1880 Hong Kong. As an NGO, we rely heavily on volunteers to help maximise our impact. Volunteering for the SPCA can be an incredibly rewarding experience for both the community and for yourself.   We have been extremely fortunate to have animal lovers who devote their time and talents to help us achieve our mission. They contribute to a huge variety of roles from crowd control, administrative tasks, kennel cleaning, dog walking and foster parenting to skill-based endeavours such as videography, translations and app development.   We are thrilled to present our latest volunteer video, 100% created by our volunteers. It showcases the story of the making of our new volunteer uniform.   We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the following individuals: Dawn Lee, Founder of RURI, who kindly sponsored the uniform using sustainable cotton; Philippa Ho, Founder of FOR THE LOVE OF DOG., who designed the artwork featuring our homing animals; Aaron Rivera, Founder of Amalia Vision, who filmed this beautiful video at our new SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre in Tsing Yi.   If you have a unique talent to share with us to help advance the lives of animals in need, drop us a note: [email protected] We would love to hear from you.   #SPCA #SPCAHK #Volunteerism #SocialImpact

Having a pet is a lifetime commitment. At the same time, it can be a life-changing experience thanks to the power of the human-animal bond. Popularly known for creating “The Hong Konger”, Eurasian writer and illustrator Sophia Hotung started her journey as an artist when she became chronically ill and could not continue her corporate career. While bedridden, she’d often draw with her rescue dogs, Coco and Sparky, by her side, who made her feel safe and helped her in various capacities, including improving her health. And now Sophia is teaming up with the SPCA to launch the “Tales of Our Rescue Pets” campaign, where she will collect inspiring pet stories from others and draw 15 lucky pets as new SPCA mascots. Join the movement to spread awareness and celebrate the incredible human-animal bond by submitting your favourite photo of your pet and their tales: https://lnkd.in/g274GjbZ Submissions close at 11:59 pm, 15 September. 100% of submission fees will support the daily and medical needs of more rescue animals at the SPCA. #SPCA #SPCAHK #AdoptDontShop #TalesofOurRescuePets

The type of animals SPCA inspectors rescue is not just limited to cats and dogs. The animals that need their rescue also include wildlife like birds, deer, boars, or even species alien to Hong Kong!   On 25 May, SPCA inspectors and authorities in Hong Kong received a report regarding an ostrich-looking animal wandering in Tin Shui Wai. The animal was an emu. Endemic to Australia, emus are the second largest living bird after ostriches!   While the bird might have enjoyed its freedom in the city, it is very dangerous for the bird as it could be easily hurt by passing vehicles.   SPCA inspectors searched the area for the elusive emu and, after approx. 3 hours, received a report from the Hong Kong Wetland Park that the bird had entered their facility. With their expertise in animal rescue, SPCA inspectors successfully captured the emu at the park. A preliminary inspection revealed no signs of injury. Subsequently, the emu was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department for further care.   The SPCA animal rescue service is free. Our Deputy Executive Director, Louisa Ho, joined ViuTVsix's news feature programme, Weekly ReViu, earlier this year to discuss the opening of our new SPCA Jockey Club Centennial Centre in Tsing Yi, and the SPCA’s efforts in rescuing and caring for stray animals in Hong Kong. According to the Government, there were 336 reports of suspected animal abuse in the first three quarters of 2023, and with pet ownership on the rise, we hope that our new Centre can serve as a welfare and educational hub for the community in Hong Kong. The new 5-storey Tsing Yi Centre has: - 8,000 sq ft dedicated to Adoption - 14,000 sq ft for Animal Birth Control and Welfare Services and, - 5,200 sq ft for education, including an interactive immersive classroom These facilities will give us the capacity to increase the number of animals treated and rehabilitated by 50% each year. To learn more about our work and the new facilities, watch the interview here: https://lnkd.in/gBaFApWr

In April, we had the honour of hosting a lunch and learn session with Dr. Amy Lowe, who visited us from the United States. Dr. Lowe shared her invaluable experiences and insights gained from working as a spay and neuter vet in North America. As the pandemic has led to a global surge in pet ownership, the exponential growth of the animal population has become evident. We both unanimously agreed that effective animal birth control programmes are extremely important to enhance animal welfare in the community. At the SPCA, we have been implementing various animal birth control programmes such as the Cat Colony Care Programme and Community Dog Programme, for decades. Dr. Lowe shared that in Texas, they have similar programmes, and with an extensive team of vets, vet nurses, technicians and a streamlined process, they can desex up to 600 animals per day on special days of operation! We aspire to achieve this capacity as we continue to grow our team and space. Dr. Lowe also shared that there are clinics in Texas that offer “all you can pay” animal desex surgeries, helping owners desex their animals with the support of funding and the generosity of more financially-capable pet owners. This system can only be made possible with the majority of pet owners being responsible, and willing to support other pet owners. It offers a valuable resource for pet owners experiencing financial difficulties, enabling them to alleviate their financial burdens. The opportunity to exchange ideas and learn from Dr. Lowe's experience was truly enlightening. It serves as a great reference for our ongoing efforts to create a positive impact on animal welfare here in Hong Kong. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Lowe for the amazing sharing! #SPCA #SPCAHK #LunchAndLearn #AnimalWelfare #AnimalBirthControl

We are excited to announce that our 24-hour veterinary emergency and hospital services at the SPCA’s Wan Chai Centre will resume on 3 June (Monday), after a temporary suspension since mid-2022 due to the pandemic. The re-opening has been made possible thanks to our dedicated team of veterinary surgeons, nurses and animal care assistants. The SPCA takes pride in its exceptional veterinary professionals, known for their diverse backgrounds and extensive expertise. Our team of 26 veterinary surgeons are from all corners of the world – from APAC to Europe to South Africa, and what has brought them together at the SPCA is their unwavering commitment to animal welfare and dedication to ensuring that every animal receives the utmost care and attention. Following renovations in 2021, the Wan Chai hospital is now equipped with an upgraded facility, designed to create a more comfortable and caring environment for animals. The new treatment area and ward layout have been carefully planned to streamline the animal treatment process, and provide a calm environment to reduce stress in our hospitalised patients.
