#VetMasterclass 👁️🗨️ Sharing Practical Experience to Protect Dogs’ Eyes】   Eye conditions such as blindness, cataracts, and glaucoma are significant health issues commonly faced by dogs 🙀. To assist veterinary general practitioners in diagnosing and treating these conditions, Dr Daniel Costa, VSH’s specialist in veterinary ophthalmology, hosted two focused lectures in June, attracting around 70 family vets 🌟! The lectures focused on practical approaches for veterinarians in dealing with canine blindness and introduced various ocular and central diseases that can cause partial or complete blindness. 👨🏫 Dr Daniel’s detailed explanations helped the attendees learn how to use differential diagnosis to identify the most likely causes of blindness and provide the correct treatment. The interaction and knowledge exchange among the participants were highly enthusiastic, and Dr Daniel looks forward to meeting everyone again soon! We are pleased to receive referral cases and delighted to discuss cases with family veterinarians from Hong Kong and their clients. #PetHealthcare ⏫ VSH Veterinary Nurse Continuing Professional Event 📚 】 Veterinary nurses are welfare ambassadors and advocates for animals. This education event highlights the important roles of veterinary nurses through delivery of high-quality in-patient care!🧑🏫 We’re honoured to have Dr. Queeny Yuen and Ms. Eva Ng (RVN) to teach a group of veterinary nurses the fundamental concepts of animal welfare in nursing patients and demonstrate how to apply the nursing process and the Ability Model to plan care for an adult feline patient with diabetes mellitus. Dr Queeny Yuen, “This Veterinary Nursing (VN) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) event was truly an evening of vet nurses coming together to reflect on and take stock of their nursing knowledge & skills to create a care plan for feline diabetic patient, Coco. Eva, Jackie and I were really impressed with the participants’ engagement and the speed with which they got the hang of applying the nursing process and Ability Model in creating their care plans. The lively exchange of ideas for nursing interventions was inspiring for all. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening that truly uplifted our spirits as veterinary nurses.” VSH hope these education events continue to enhance local pet welfare, healthcare, and benefit more pets in the future 🆙! #ProCareStories 🐕 Targeted Surgery Helped Mak Jai Overcome Lameness】 Mak Jai, a one-year-old mixed-breed dog, was referred to see our Surgery Specialist, François Saulnier, for an acute onset of non-weight-bearing lameness on his right pelvic limb after chasing a ball. Mak Jai’s owners have reported that he will occasionally lift up his right pelvic limb. Physical and orthopaedic examinations revealed Mak Jai has a mild joint effusion and a medial patella luxation on the right pelvic limb.   Under general anaesthesia, physical palpation of both pelvic limbs revealed the patella of the right pelvic limb could easily be luxated medially while unconscious. Radiographs of the right pelvic limb confirm the absence of degenerative osteoarthritis, and the tibial crest remains partially open. Mak Jai underwent a medial patella surgery to stabilise his kneecap. The depth of the trochlear groove was sufficient and trochleoplasty was not performed; Mak Jai had lateral parapatellar fascia imbrication and tibial tuberosity transposition. Mak Jai made an uneventful and speedy recovery. Our team is so happy to see Mak Jai walking so well during his revisit.   Here are some tips on what you would expect during a patella luxation surgery: MPL surgery typically combines techniques to realign the kneecap and stabilise the joint. ·       Femoral groove deepening: To provide better stability, the shallow groove in the femur bone that holds the patella in place might be deepened. ·       Tibial tuberosity transposition (TTT): This involves adjusting the attachment point of the patellar tendon on the shin bone to improve alignment. ·       Soft tissue tightening: The ligaments and capsule surrounding the knee joint might be tightened to prevent future luxation. With successful surgery, Mak Jai is expected to regain his vitality soon after recovery and exercise 👾! #ProCareStories 🐾 Tong Yuen’s Journey to Recovery】   Meet our beautiful and playful girl Tong Yuen!   Tong Yuen is a 7-year-old mixed breed. She was referred to see our Surgery Specialist, Dr François Saulnier, for a sudden onset of severe lameness on the right pelvic limb following a hike. Tong Yuen is well-loved by her wonderful owners; she gets a 1-2 hours of hiking per day. Owners noticed Tong Yuen would limp a little bit and get better after a day or two in the months preceding this acute deterioration.   Physical examinations revealed Grade 6/10 lameness on the right pelvic limb, a moderate right stifle joint effusion, a mild diffuse muscle atrophy on the right thigh, and a cranial draw sign in the right stifle joint. The owners of Tong Yuen had elected to receive Anaesthesia Specialty support from our Anaesthetist, Dr Hiroki Sano. Pre-operative radiographs were obtained under general anaesthesia, which revealed a moderate degree of degenerative osteoarthropathy, mild osteophytosis, mild enthesophytosis, and moderate joint swelling on the right pelvic limb.   Tong Yuen underwent a Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery to address a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture. TPLO surgery aims to neutralise tibiofemoral shear force by altering the tibial plateau via proximal tibial osteotomy. Here is a simplified explanation of Tong Yuen’s TPLO surgery:   1.    A curved cut in the tibial from front to back. 2.    This section of the tibia plateau is then rotated backwards until the desired angle between the tibia and femur is achieved. 3.    A specialised TPLO plate and screws are applied to stabilise the two sections of the tibia.   Tong Yuen made an uneventful and speedy recovery and is now happily hiking with her owners. Our team is thrilled to see Tong Yuen walking so well during her visit. Thank you François Saulnier Hiroki Sano!   For all your specialty referral needs, please fill out our online referral form at www.vsh.com.hk or contact us at 📞 2408 2588.   #vsh #specialist #veterinarysurgery #tplo #lameness #stiflejointeffusion #muscleatrophy #cranialdrawersign #petrehabilitation #Anaesthesiologist #VeterinaryAnaesthesiology #veterinaryspecialist #vetmed #advancedvetmed #betterworldforpets #proudlymvhasia #proudlymvh #proudlymars

【Advancing #PetHealthcare ⏫ VSH Hosted Veterinary Seminars】 To promote Hong Kong pet healthcare development, VSH held two CPD seminars last week exclusively for veterinarians in Hong Kong🧑🏫! 🧠 Last Wednesday, our very own neurology specialist Dr Josep Brocal led a session for veterinarians from SPCA (Hong Kong), discussing #DisordersMimickingEpileptic Seizures. Valuable knowledge and experiences were shared to all. Dr Josep, “Our attendants had fun watching loads of videos of disorders that can mimic epileptic seizures in dogs and cats. They were encouraged to make educated guesses about the possible diagnosis which was followed by a summary of the disease. Can you recognise an epileptic seizure?” 💉 The following day, our anaesthesiology specialist Dr Hiroki Sano conducted a veterinary seminar on #AnaestheticManagementforCardiacaRenalDiseases in Dogs and Cats, which attracted many veterinarians and was highly engaged. VSH is delighted to see the enthusiastic participation and knowledge exchange among Hong Kong veterinarians. We hope these seminars will enhance local pet healthcare and benefit more pets in the future 🆙! For all your specialty referral needs, please fill out our online referral form at www.vsh.com.hk or contact us at 📞 2408 2588.
