It's the second-largest microplastic pollutant in the ocean, after single-use plastics. Then we meet Gavin McCormick, an entrepreneur, who is leveraging satellite technology to counter greenhouse emissions. "My name is Mr. Friedman. I run a company. Our company makes nuts and bolts. You have one of them in your hands." Since 2015, activist Matt Friedman has led powerful, immersive workshops that put students into the shoes of the illegally enslaved and feel what it's like for the millions of people across Asia entrapped in slave labor. He tells the students their labor is his, and orders them to do slow and grueling work without rest. As Covid-19 continues to shutter schools across Asia, Friedman is making his workshop virtual. As part of CNN's My Freedom Day, 40 students and their parents from Bangkok and Hong Kong get an online lesson in modern-day slavery. As CNN's Kristie Lu Stout reports, although the sweatshop experience is virtual, its impact is very real.

The growing demand for ocean resources is pushing marine ecosystems near to breaking point, a problem made worse by the climate crisis. On the latest episode of 'Inventing Tomorrow', CNN anchor and correspondent Kristie Lu Stout spotlights the entrepreneurs in Hong Kong, Israel, the United States and the Philippines who are finding ways to use the ocean more sustainably, stem the tide of pollution and safeguard this vital resource.

In the murky waters off the coast of Hong Kong, coral has persisted against the odds. Vriko Yu has worked with scientists from The University of Hong Kong to develop 3D-printed clay tiles that provide a stable foundation for reefs to grow.

Just over 20 percent of the ocean floor is mapped today. U.S.-based startup Bedrock Ocean Exploration hopes to change that with its new breed of ocean technology: a seven-foot-long electric submarine equipped with sonars, cameras and lasers to help it navigate and catalogue the marine environment.

When humans build on coastlines, they often destroy the ecosystems sea creatures depend on. Marine biologist Ido Sella co-founded the Israel-based startup ECOncrete, which develops concrete blocks for coastal construction that match the neutral pH of seawater and mimic the shape and texture of natural rock formations, helping marine life to thrive. The company has installations across the world, including in Hong Kong, where marine pollution researcher Juan Carlos has helped install ECOncrete's tidal pool blocks as part of a trial to boost biodiversity on artificial shorelines.

Finally, CNN learns how Philippines-based startup Fortuna Cools developed a longer-lasting eco-friendly alternative to polystyrene coolers – using discarded coconut husks. The startup partnered with Justino Arboleda, a professor-turned-manufacturer who created technology to make insulation out of coconut husks as a way to provide extra income to local coconut farmers and reduce plastic pollution in the ocean.

In this month's episode of CNN's 'Tech for Good', anchor and correspondent Kristie Lu Stout meets the minds behind the technology that could transform our farms and preserve our forests to enable a greener, more sustainable future.

In the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, a high-tech greenhouse by AppHarvest offers a potential solution for a future of sustainable farming. Company founder & CEO Jonathan Webb shows CNN around this controlled environment, where robots monitor and harvest crops at their optimal ripeness and LED lights supplement the sun's rays. With the assistance of tech and the promise of precision agriculture, Webb is hopeful that farming can be transformed for the better.

Feeding the planet requires a multi-pronged approach. Rory Aronson is the creator of FarmBot, which seeks to automate the labor-intensive steps of gardening, allowing users to take ownership of the food production process. CNN also hears from German company Agrilution about their 'Plantcube', a home appliance that houses a personal, climate-controlled vertical farm, as well as from Berlin-based startup Infarm which operates urban farms to help tackle food insecurity.

Next, Lu Stout speaks with Professor Thomas Crowther, who heads up a lab in Zurich that is addressing biodiversity loss by using satellite imagery, machine learning and artificial intelligence to map ecosystems. Last year, Crowther founded Restor, an online platform to connect conservationists with local restoration efforts and empower them with data.

Finally, in a bid to restore forests and fight climate change, Canadian start-up Flash Forest is on a mission to plant 1 billion trees by 2028 using drones and aerial mapping. Their work is centered on the boreal forest of North America – the largest biome on earth. Company CEO Bryce Jones explains how their drones can plant trees ten times faster than humans, with the added benefit of being able to reach difficult terrain.

Lu Stout first meets one of the world's most famous androids, Sophia, for a tour around her birthplace – Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics. CEO David Hanson explains how robotic humanoid medical assistants – like Sophia's "sister" Grace – could be used in healthcare to provide patients with social stimulation and gather data on their well-being. Meanwhile in Singapore, a robotics program at Changi General Hospital is bringing a fleet of robots into wards.

Lu Stout then speaks with Carrie Shaw, founder and CEO of Embodied Labs, a Los Angeles-based immersive training platform that employs virtual reality to help healthcare workers step into the shoes of their patients. Through the company's software, users can experience the life of an elderly patient – pushing the boundaries of how we can visualize and understand human health.

Next, CNN hears from Tony Chahine, whose Toronto-based company Myant has the latest in wearable tech: a line of 'smart underwear' called Skiin, capable of collecting health data on the wearer. By weaving haptic sensors into everyday clothing, Myant hopes to provide continuous biometric data to its users and their loved ones – helping them closely monitor health and detect the severity of chronic conditions.

Finally, the increase in social isolation and uncertainty over the past year has led many to turn to wellness apps. Lu Stout chats to Jolawn Victor, Chief International Officer of Headspace, about the potential of the app's guided meditations and how she hopes it can foster more conversation around mental health.
