Scouting report
Jeanie Buss: You know, I never had that conversation with LeBron or Bronny, but in business situations, I addressed my father as Dr. Buss. I wanted to keep that boundary clear because that helped us out — we weren’t bringing work home to the dinner table. So I think LeBron and Bronny are very prepared for this. And I’m excited just for them to have this opportunity. But Bronny is a good player. I’m excited to see what our new coach, JJ Redick, has in store. It’s definitely gonna be an interesting season for sure. I mean, LeBron, the way he played at the Olympics? He might be the greatest of all time.
Redick is not concerned about his two stars though despite their Olympic runs, as he explained on Spectrum’s Lakeshow Podcast: “I mean, look, those guys are professionals in every sense of the word. My concern for them about whether or not they’ll be ready to play on Oct. 22 and be in shape, I don’t have that concern. We’re gonna work with Mike and Ish making sure that they feel that they’re in a great place to start the regular season. They’ll certainly be involved in training camp and the preseason here in September as well as preseason games.”

JJ Redick on LeBron James and Anthony Davis: They'll be ready to play on October 22 and be in shape

Q. How much did you enjoy their Olympic run and what happens when training camp starts? I assume they get a little easing in of things to come. JJ Redick: Yeah I mean, look, those guys are professionals in every sense of the word. My concern for them about whether or not they’ll be ready to play on October 22 and be in shape, I don’t have that concern. We’re gonna work with Mike and Ish making sure that they feel that they’re in a great place to start the regular season. They’ll certainly be involved in training camp and the preseason here in September as well as preseason games.

Shaquille O’Neal: “I was fortunate enough to play for coaches like Phil Jackson and Pat Riley. When you have coaches like that, you listen. When Phil Jackson tells you to run a play, you do it because you’ve seen him win six championships. You know he knows what he’s talking about. But when you get a young coach who hasn’t won anything, there’s a different level of respect. You might think, ‘I’m a better player than this guy ever was. Why should I listen to him?’ That’s what I think the Lakers are going to face with JJ Redick. LeBron and AD will keep everyone in line, but I think it’s going to be tough for a young coach to get that level of respect from veteran players.”
Even though expectations are high though, Lakers legend Magic Johnson urged fans to be patient with JJ Redick, via Sports Central LA with Jim Hill: “We as Lakers fans gotta give JJ Redick, our new coach, some time to really help him understand how to utilize the talent, how to coach the talent, and then also what schemes will work, and what schemes won’t work. Because this is not going to be easy for him. But I think having LeBron as your captain [helps] and one of the greatest that’s ever laced them up in AD, and they showed Laker fans and basketball fans around the world what they’re capable of doing in the Olympics.”

Jeanie Buss on JJ Redick hire: We wanted to think in a different way

Jeanie Buss on JJ Redick hire: “We wanted to kind of think a different way. Really, he’s got a vision. I’m not comfortable talking about the basketball stuff, but we were looking for a candidate that would bring something different. And really invest in developing young players. JJ is the right person for us. Again, I just want to work to really speak for itself. So I don’t want to hype it and say it’s gonna be a home run. We have to give him time to establish what he wants to establish. I’m really impressed with his staff. Right now, it’s not mandatory for the players to come in and practice but players are coming in and working out. The coaching staff with Nate McMillan and Scotty Brooks, there’s a lot of experience that will be there for him to make that adjustment to being a head coach. Certainly a 12-year career in the league, he’s got a lot of experience. He knows what this league is about and I think he’ll be a great leader.”
Rob Pelinka and the Los Angeles Lakers headed into the summer knowing they had to upgrade the roster coming off a first-round exit and mostly disappointing season. Darvin Ham was fired. JJ Redick was hired. But the changes couldn’t possibly end there, could they? In all likelihood, according to sources close to the situation, they will. The Lakers are still making occasional calls around the league about trades, but those conversations have slowed considerably and the summer will likely conclude with Dalton Knecht and Bronny James being the only additions to the roster.
Kurt Rambis was heavily involved in putting together Redick’s coaching staff , a process that took up until the end of Summer League. In an effort to keep closer tabs on information running through the front office, sources say every decision involved Pelinka, the Rambises, Jeanie Buss and Tim Harris throughout the process, which led to far more conversation about each move and wound up gumming things up to the point of complete ineffectiveness. “Rob is a smart dude,” said a Western Conference scout in the halls of the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. “You aren’t going to get fired for decisions you don’t make. If you involve your bosses in those decisions, you’re that much safer.”
