Similar to what happened in Ljubljana a few weeks ago to honor Goran Dragic’s retirement from basketball, Zagreb hosted some legendary basketball names tonight. The reason was remarkable: honoring the legacy of a true icon like Drazen Petrovic. Luka Doncic and his father Sasa, Vlade Divac, Toni Kukoc, Dino Radja, Aleksandar Dzikic, Jorge Garbajosa, Ergin Ataman, and a lot more accepted the invite of Drazen’s brother and current Brazilian national team’s head coach Aleksandar Petrovic to attend the show.
Today, the FIBA Central Board appointed FIBA Oceania President David Reid as FIBA First Vice-President, and also FIBA Europe President Jorge Garbajosa and FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave as FIBA Vice-Presidents. The Central Board approved the reappointment of Mark Tatum, NBA Deputy Commissioner & COO as representative of the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki as representative of the Players and Patrick Hunt as President of the World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC).
Basketball fans in Malaga could witness one of the biggest international events this summer. As La Opinión de Málaga has learned, and in the absence of official confirmation, the Slovenia of Luka Doncic, the United States, and Spain will play a tournament on August 11, 12, and 13 in Malaga on the occasion of the centenary of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB). The institution chaired by Jorge Garbajosa will present the events this Wednesday.
Per Eurohoops, “Juancho wants to play in the Olympic Games, but Juancho won’t be able to play,” Garbajosa said in a statement. “We’ve had countless medical meetings and we’ve never received a ‘no’. We have a received a ‘yes’. We don’t have a problem with the [Minnesota Timberwolves] or the NBA. It’s a problem of people – not medical personnel – who have personally decided that Juancho couldn’t play. I’m talking about their president of basketball operations [Gersson Rosas].
“Four hours before the game against USA, there was a meeting between the doctors of the national team and the doctors of the Timberwolves franchise who congratulated Juancho and the national team on the recovery,” Garbajosa said. “The answer about whether Juancho could play was a ‘yes’ and that the next evaluation will be after the Olympics. From that moment until Minnesota told us that he won’t play, there were a series of facts that showed that the decision isn’t of medical nature. Even the Timberwolves coach congratulated Juancho for being in Tokyo. No one doubted that he could play.”
Spanish Basketball Federation President Jorge Garbajosa announced that the national team will face off against Team USA in Las Vegas on July 18. The clash will be played out in the bubble as a part of the preparations for the 2021 Olympic Games which are scheduled to open just five days after the clash between the two top national teams in FIBA’s rankings.
