Johnnie Bryant Rumors
The Cleveland Cavaliers have finalized their coaching staff for the upcoming 2024-25 season and named Johnnie Bryant as Associate Head Coach and Jordan Ott, Mike Gerrity, DeMarre Carroll, Trevor Hendry, Omar Cook, Bryan Tibaldi and Nate Reinking as Assistant Caches on Head Coach Kenny Atkinson’s staff, Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman and Atkinson announced today from Cleveland Clinic Courts.
Who is Tom Thibodeau’s right hand on the coaching staff? Who has the biggest input on his decisions and his calls? It seemed to me it was Johnnie Bryant, so if that was the case, who would take his place? — Submitted by Sergio F Esquivel Fred Katz: I wouldn’t say there is an assistant with the largest impact. If there is one element we know about Thibodeau, it’s that you get the authentic version of him if he’s your coach, no matter who else is on the bench. For what it’s worth, I would not have called Bryant — who was originally hired by the front office, not Thibodeau — his right-hand man. Bryant took an equivalent job with the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer. If the Knicks felt they needed to keep him, they could have.
Andy Greer and Rick Brunson are Thibodeau loyalists and have been with him for years. Brunson, especially, is his muscle, someone who will say whatever he believes with vigor behind it. Darren Erman has been in New York since Thibodeau took over. Mo Cheeks is joining the staff for this season. He and Thibodeau have never before worked together, but Cheeks is a Hall of Fame player, a veteran assistant with head-coaching experience and, more relevant to this topic, a longtime friend of Thibodeau. In some ways, the answer to this question may be Dice Yoshimoto, a second-row coach without the résumés of the aforementioned but who sticks to Thibodeau like glue. Yoshimoto was a video coordinator for Thibodeau in Chicago and went with him to Minnesota before taking an assistant job under him in New York. During the year Thibodeau took off between the Timberwolves and Knicks, he got Yoshimoto a job at University of Georgia, working for Thibodeau’s friend, Tom Crean.
Adrian Wojnarowski: New York Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant has agreed on a deal to become associate head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources tell ESPN. Bryant will join Kenny Atkinson’s new staff after four years with the Knicks and the previous six with the Utah Jazz. pic.twitter.com/ywyjxpMVst
Ian Begley: Source confirms that Johnnie Bryant is leaving the Knicks to be the associate head coach in Cleveland under Kenny Atkinson. Bryant was still under contract so ownership had to sign off on him leaving in the middle of his deal, per sources. @wojespn first on Bryant leaving for CLE
Chris Fedor: #Cavs are hiring Johnnie Bryant as associate head coach, sources tell @clevelanddotcom. Bryant, the longtime friend and mentor of Donovan Mitchell, has spent the last few seasons with the Knicks.
Cleveland is expected to have interest in several candidates to join Atkinson’s staff, including Johnnie Bryant, Jared Dudley, Trevor Hendry, and others, league sources told HoopsHype. Dudley and Hendry were with Atkinson, Ott, Carroll, Jarrett Allen, and Caris LeVert in Brooklyn. Dudley could remain with the Mavericks, but the Cavaliers are expected to inquire about reuniting him with Atkinson. Hendry was the video coordinator on Atkinson’s staff for three seasons with the Brooklyn Nets before he was promoted to assistant coach after Atkinson moved on from Brooklyn.
Michael Scotto: James Borrego did his initial interview as well. He’s a noteworthy candidate who won 10 more games each of his last two years in Charlotte. I’ve also heard Dave Joerger and Chris Quinn have spoken with Cleveland for their head coaching job. Others include Johnnie Bryant and Micah Nori. I see Atkinson and Borrego as finalists for this job when it’s all said and done.
New Orleans Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego completed a visit with Cavaliers brass on Tuesday, sources said, while Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori are also scheduled to meet with Cleveland officials in person this week. The Cavaliers have met with and are still conducting interviews with various candidates over Zoom as well, sources said, such as Knicks assistant Johnnie Bryant and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Dave Joerger.
