ChildFund International in Indonesia initiated socialization and focus group discussions for school-based adolescent health programs. This activity took place in Yogyakarta on August 21 and 22, 2024. The initiative brought several objectives. ✅ First, to build joint commitment and cross-sector collaboration. That is why in addition to its 9 partners, ChildFund International in Indonesia also involved representatives of OPDs from the District/City Health Office, Provincial Education Office and District/City Education Office from 11 target areas. ✅ The second objective is to collect information and experiences from stakeholders that will be valuable insights to know the challenges and opportunities for implementing school-based programs in each area. ChildFund International in Indonesia considers schools as an important base in program implementation since it allows for a more coordinated and sustainable approach. In addition to sustainability and long-term impact, schools are places with high accessibility and provide an environment that supports learning and behavior change. Schools are a safe place for discussion and education about adolescent health. The involvement, participation and collaboration of various parties allows for a positive impact on adolescent health. When it comes to fulfilling the rights of children, children themselves should be the key voice; they understand what they pass through and what exactly they need. That is why the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (Komisi Perlindungan Anak Indonesia or KPAI) and Indonesia Joining Forces (IJF)* are organizing the Consultation for Children from Eastern Part of Indonesia on August 24-25, 2024. This event will be focused on the realization of civil and participation rights, the right to freedom from violence, the right to freedom from discrimination, and the right to development of the children. The results of this consultation will become a reference for inter-ministerial discussions during the review of the National Strategy of the Elimination of Violence against Children (Stranas KPAI) and guidance for KPAI in forming future program designs. This will also provide invaluable inputs for IJF's Children Forum in discussion with other children's forums. Join us to amplify children's voices and realize all their rights. Your support will ensure a safe and fair world for every child in Indonesia. The alliance works with and for children and young people under the age of 18 to protect their rights and end violence against them. #IndonesiaJoiningForces #ChildFundIndonesia #ChildConsultation #ChildRights Husnul Maad Mitra Tobing Alowisya Ikis Reny Haning Hanneke Oudkerk Fatima Astuti

Youth, Local Wisdom, and Peace Every community has its own unique ways of resolving conflicts and building social cohesion. These mechanisms, rooted in local wisdom, have been passed down through generations, effectively maintaining social harmony and preserving diversity. However, with the advent of modernization, these traditional approaches have gradually eroded and are often forgotten. As a result, the younger generation, who should be inheriting these conflict resolution methods, is often unaware of their culture's traditional practices. In Lampung, the Strengthening Social Cohesion Project (SSCP), supported by the EU, and implemented by ChildFund International in Indonesia and YPSK, is empowering young people to rediscover their region's peace-building traditions. Through this program, they have embraced the cultural values of Pi'il Pesenggiri, which promotes dialogue and consensus through deliberation to resolve community issues. These young people are now sharing this culture of peace with their peers, thereby strengthening social cohesion amidst diversity. Today, they celebrate the Festival of Culture, honoring cultural diversity as they move forward together

  • From August 11-17, 2024, ChildFund International organized workshop of Protection and Well-being (EPW) program in Srilanka. It is is a global initiative developed by ChildFund to address the challenges of violence and ensure that children are learning in safe, supportive environments. Aiming to share the lessons learnt implementation of EPW from different countries, it provided valuable insights for its application in Indonesia. According to ivan tagor, our Program Specialist, who participated the workshop, EPW is a crucial program to support children in Indonesia. "This program will not only significantly help students achieve their educational goals but also assist parents and teachers in creating a mutually supportive environment both at school and at home, as the EPW program integrates social-emotional learning (SEL) with cognitive-behavioral skills training for children, teachers, and caregivers,’ he said. By enhancing relationships and promoting positive practices within schools and families, EPW aims to break the cycle of violence, ultimately leading to better protection, well-being, and educational outcomes for children. This is especially important as research from ChildFund, involving data from nearly 18,000 children across 17 countries, revealed that a significant number of students have witnessed or experienced violence at school. #ChildProtection #ChildFundIndonesia #EducationForProtectionAndWellBeing Husnul Maad Mitra Tobing

Today (22/8), ChildFund International in Indonesia and community members of Lampung Selatan celebrated the diversity and harmony through Pesta Budaya (Culture Festive) supported by the Strengthening Social Cohesion Project (SSCP) – a project funded by the European Union. This event featured performances by children and young people presenting traditional dances. Additionally, the community participated in traditional games competitions and a tumpeng decoration contest. Husnul Maad, Country Director of ChildFund International in Indonesia, stated that the SSCP promotes cultural practices to build peace, particularly among young people. Their involvement in this project and activities is part of the effort to preserve the cultural values of Pi'il Pesenggiri, which teaches inter-communal peace through dialogue and consensus-building. “Cultural, ethnicity and religious diversity could potentially cause conflict in the communities, but it could be prevented through dialogue and consensus building among community members – this is what the project will enhance,” he further said.  The SSCP which was launched on 1 February 2023 and will run until 31 July 2025 in Lampung, Indonesia, and Liquica, Timor Leste.  SSCP is a collaboration initiative between ChildFund International in Indonesia as project lead, ChildFund Australia in Timor Leste, Yayasan Pembinaan Sosial Katolik, Belun, and Bafuturu. Since its inception until July 2024, the SSCP in Lampung has directly reached 1001 participants of various SSCP activities such as inter-faith, cultural and generational dialogues, training and capacity building on storytelling, peace building education, communication and civic journalism, gender equality, diversity and social inclusion as well as meaningful youth participation. Collaboration is a cornerstone of the SSCP's implementation. In Lampung, the project has partnered with 13 villages, 5 sub-districts, 1 district, and 1 province, as well as 16 schools. This collaboration fosters participatory project implementation and promotes intercultural, religious, and generational dialogue. By building ownership and sustainability, the project aims to leave a lasting impact beyond its official end date in July 2025. One tangible outcome is the anticipated replication or scaling up of the peace education model to 164 junior high schools in South Lampung District through a partnership between the district's education department and the SSCP. • At the ISPCAN - Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention's Annual Conference in Uppsala, Sweden, on August 19, 2024, our Child Protection & Advocacy Specialist Reny Haning presented critical findings from a pilot study that sheds light on safeguarding children in today's digital landscape. The study, which utilizes our Community-Based Child Protection (CBCP) Mapping approach, integrated online risks to address the growing concern of digital threats. In collaboration with Khadiga Alsharif of ChildFund International, Reny uncovered alarming issues from 24 focus group discussions across 4 districts in Indonesia, involving 212 participants, including children aged 9-14 and their parents. 1️⃣ One key finding from the discussions with mothers revealed that gadget addiction is a significant issue. 👨👩👧👦Parents admitted that their need for peace and quiet while working or managing household chores often leads them to give their children phones, unintentionally exposing them to potential abuse and online exploitation. A 35-year-old parent of a 4-year-old child shared, "If I give them a phone, the child can be quiet, and I can finish my work quickly," highlighting the unintended risks of this practice 🛑 2️⃣ The study also revealed that groups of boys identified exposure to Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) as a concern. ⚠Village halls with free Wi-Fi, initially intended for distance learning, have become hotspots for children to exchange or access inappropriate content, particularly among elementary school students in grades 4-6. 3️⃣ Girls in grades 3-4 are at a particularly vulnerable age, as they begin to understand adult content but lack the mental maturity to process it, leading to troubling behaviors like harassment from peers. ⭐ These findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced digital safety measures and responsible parenting. Join us in our mission to protect children in the digital age. Learn more about our initiatives and how you can help by visiting our website or following us on social media. We know that online sexual exploitation and abuse affects children everywhere, but our Community-Based Child Protection(CBCP) Mapping is a powerful tool that can give us more precise data around what exact risks young people face within their communities. Today at @ISPCAN, ChildFund International in Indonesia's Reny Haning and ChildFund's Khadiga Alsharif discussed how ChildFund recently piloted the integration of online risks into the CBCP mapping. The pilot study aimed to identify gaps, map risk factors, and propose strategies for a holistic child protection approach that includes digital safety. This presentation shared the methods used to address the complexities of child protection in the digital age, results of the mapping activities, and a community-led call to action for safeguarding children from evolving threats. #OSEAC #ISPCAN2024

Celebrating #YouthHeroes: Youth Voice Now Sikka Wins Kalpataru Awards for Environmental Protection  In the spirit of the 79th anniversary of Indonesia's Independence, we proudly congratulate the members of Youth Voice Now Sikka as 2nd place awardees for the category Environmental Protector in the 2024 #Kalpataru Awards. Such an honor was conferred directly by the Regent of Sikka, Adrianus Firminus Parera, S.E., M.Si, following the red and white flag-raising ceremony on August 17, 2024. The Kalpataru Award is an Indonesian award conferred by the government upon those individuals and groups who have contributed much to the conservation of the environment. The award, first introduced in 1980, has been given for outstanding effort in the preservation and improvement of the environment, especially those that show innovation, commitment, and leadership. The award for the Youth Voice Now Sikka is not an instant achievement. Since its establishment in 2022 as part of the Youth Voice Now project supported by the Swedish Institute and Barnfonden, the youth have accomplished a lot. From campaigns on social media and on the streets, they have also engaged in tree planting, initiated movements to reduce plastic waste, and conducted boot camps to build the capacity of young people in Sikka Regency regarding the climate crisis and its impact on child violence. Even though the project has ended in June 2023, we and the youth continue to move forward. This award is one of the proofs of how the sustainability of the project remains intact and continues to impact the community. The members of Youth Voice Now Sikka are the real inspiration of Indonesia's youth for fighting, so that we might free our children from environmental damage and toward a safe and protected future. Let's support their efforts and continue this fight for a better Indonesia by sharing this post. #YouthAsAgentsofChange #ChildFundIndonesia #ChildProtection #EnvironmentalAward Husnul Maad Mitra Tobing Meinrad INDRA CAHYA Reny Haning Candra Dethan (she/her) #
