🤝 Achieving the goals set by Kementerian Lingkungan Hidup dan Kehutanan's Regulation 75/2019, titled "Roadmap for Reducing Plastic Pollution by Producers," requires a collective effort. This ambitious regulation targets a 30% reduction in waste at the source, emphasising the importance of collaboration across sectors to make it a reality.   Under the ASEAN-German cooperation portfolio, the #3RproMar project facilitates support of a crucial initiative to manage post-consumption packaging waste. Through the Digital Return System (DRS) project, launched by the Circular Consortium—comprising KIBUMI, Parongpong Recycle And Waste Lab, and SALS GROUP INDONESIA—steps are being taken to facilitate the return and recycling of packaging materials.   On 31 July 2024, GIZ 3RproMar, in collaboration with the Circular Consortium, launched the groundbreaking pilot project "Digital Return System" in Bandung. This initiative aims to enable the recycling of low-value plastic waste materials from essential oils and cosmetics/aromatherapy bottles, transforming them into upcycled furniture products through the innovative digital app "Balik.in."   Key stakeholders attended the launch event, including representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Bandung Environment Agency (DLH) Kota Bandung, Kabupaten Bandung Barat, waste banks, junk shops, and brand owners. A significant milestone was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for partnerships between Yagi Forest, Botanina (cosmetics brand owners), and the Kibumi Parongpong Consortium.   ♻️Download the app today and join us in reducing waste through sustainable recycling practices. ♻️   #circulareconomy #GIZ #Indonesia #GIZWorks #ASEAN #Germany

"Unraveling PVC Recycling Supply Chain in Indonesia: Integrating Roles of Formal and Informal Sectors" By Indri Mariska In Indonesia, the post-consumer Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) recycling flow is unique as it involves participation from both formal and informal sectors. This distinctive process begins at the grassroots level where informal waste pickers and formal waste management authorities collect discarded PVC materials from various sources. Informal waste pickers and formal waste management authorities play crucial roles in the initial stages of the recycling chain by diverting PVC from waste disposal sites such as TPS/TPS3R/TPST to recycling streams. Materials gathered from diverse sources are then sorted and sold to small scrap shops by informal waste pickers or transported to formal recycling facilities for more systematic processing. This process demonstrates how collaboration between formal and informal sectors can contribute to more effective waste management, albeit facing logistical challenges and the need for continuous improvement in processing efficiency. The integration of formal and informal sector roles in the PVC recycling chain in Indonesia ultimately benefits the recycling industry and other companies involved in this PVC recycling value chain. Informal waste collectors in Indonesia benefit from the increasing demand for recycled materials and the enhancement of long-term agreements for plastic purchases by wholesale buyers of plastic raw materials and waste collection institutions. In this regard, providers of consumer goods and other private sector entities involved in the value chain also benefit from the availability of fully traceable recycled plastic raw materials, thereby ensuring the availability of ethically responsible raw material sources. #PVC #RECYCLING

"Optimizing EPR in shaping future of PVC Regulation: Directive strategy to boosting Collection and Recycling rates in Indonesia" By Jordan Mordekhai PVC is a widely used plastic known for its resistance to corrosion, durability, and flexibility. Post-consumer PVC waste can come from various sectors, including construction, transportation, electronics, agriculture, medical care, and consumer goods. Most of this waste is managed through mechanical recycling, energy recovery, or safe disposal, especially for short and medium-term products like household items and packaging. In realizing an effective waste management strategy, post-consumer waste management for these types of PVC products must also ensure compliance with the legal framework, thus shaping the future regulatory landscape in realizing PVC recycling in Indonesia."   Recently, the Indonesian government has made a serious commitment to regulate PVC by issuing a new regulation, Minister of Environment Regulation Number P.75/Menlhk/Setjen/Kum.1/10/2019, which outlines a roadmap for waste reduction by producers. This regulation is the first to address PVC specifically. It bans the use of certain single-use plastics, including single-use PVC like floor cleaner bottles and food packaging, starting January 1, 2030. Manufacturers of PVC packaging must use 100% recyclable materials, with at least 50% recycled content, and must manage the recycling of post-consumer PVC packaging. They are also required to use reusable packaging. Until the ban takes effect, recycling activities must continue.   As Comparison, PVC manufacturers in Denmark have created WUPPI, a voluntary initiative to collect and recycle PVC from construction waste to support the environment and a circular economy. Founded in 1997, WUPPI serves municipalities, contractors, and waste companies handling hard PVC. They work with Ragn-Sells Denmark for sorting and then send the sorted PVC to Van Werven in the Netherlands for processing and sale to European companies. Though voluntary, this model could offer valuable lessons for developing PVC regulations in Indonesia. #PVC #PVCRegulation
