At our last Sustainable FNB Networking event on 28 March, we emphasized the urgent need for sustainable practices to mitigate the F&B industry's emissions and water use. These practices promise long-term economic stability, social well-being, and opportunities for cost efficiencies and market growth (read more here: https://bit.ly/sustainfnb). One of the eleven sustainable solutions presented at our event was Kecipir, an organic and sustainable grocery marketplace. Among the attending F&B players was Common Grounds Coffee Roastery. We are thrilled to see how the encounter between Kecipir and Common Grounds at our Sustainable F&B Networking event has evolved into a meaningful collaboration to develop an innovative fertilizer that promotes a circular economy. Launched at the Green Economy Expo 2024, Kecipir, Common Grounds, and Reka Selaras Alam has successfully produced “Ground2Grow,” an organic fertilizer using spent coffee grounds (SCG) as the main ingredient. Developed with sustainability in mind, Ground2Grow is a slow-release organic NPK fertilizer that is 30% more effective in increasing coffee crop yields and other agricultural plants compared to conventional chemical fertilizers. This collaboration was showcased among other sustainable solutions at the Green Economy Expo 2024 on 3-5 July 2024 at Jakarta Convention Center, held by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas Republic of Indonesia. Indonesia produces approximately 225 thousand tons of SCG annually, with over 90% wasted, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions (methane and carbon dioxide) when disposed of in landfills. By blending SCG with natural ingredients, Ground2Grow addresses the challenge of low coffee crop yields. Despite being the third-largest coffee producer globally, Indonesia faces low yields, especially in Robusta, which generally yields between 700-1,000 kg per hectare. With El Niño affecting prices, Robusta coffee saw a price increase of over 40% in 2023 alone. Ground2Grow is developed by mixing SCG with natural ingredients to create a balanced, nutrient-rich powder, as unprocessed SCG is too acidic for direct use as fertilizer. Reka Selaras Alam’s expert, Prof. Robert Manurung advanced research capabilities play a crucial role in this process, infusing the powder with additional organic compounds and additives. Kecipir leverages its experience and farmer network to encourage the shift from chemical to organic fertilizers, while Common Grounds supplies SCG and eggshells as key ingredients. Ground2Grow boasts a 90% absorption level, significantly higher than the 50-60% absorption rate of conventional chemical fertilizers, reducing wastage due to rainwater runoff. If you or your colleagues are interested in distributing Ground2Grow organic fertilizer, please indicate your interest here: https://lnkd.in/gBqATpSW. If you’re a coffee business owner looking to collaborate on providing SCG, drop us a comment and let’s connect!

On May 7th, 2024, the Paloma Sjahrir Foundation brought positive vibes to the brightspotMALL at Ratu Plaza, Jakarta, by hosting an insightful talk show titled “How Can Businesses be Friendlier to Our Planet?”. Amidst the shopping festivities featuring over 200 curated local brands, our Chairperson, Ratna Kartadjoemena, shared the stage with Anton Wirjono (Founder & CEO of brightspot and The Goods Dept) and Hana Nur Auliana (Corporate Strategy Executive of Waste4Change). The discussion, moderated by Inez S. (Managing Partner, Supernova Ecosystem), covered several key topics: ⏳Sustaining Long-Term Efforts: Ratna Kartadjoemena, who has been dedicated to sustainability for over a decade, emphasized the importance of celebrating progress and perseverance. Drawing from her experience with Potato Head Family’s Do Good initiatives and zero waste philosophy, she now leads the Paloma Sjahrir Foundation, connecting impact enterprises with environmental and social missions, like Waste4Change, to supportive networks. ♻ Addressing Waste Management: Hana Nur Auliana highlighted the often-overlooked issue of waste management. She explained how unmanaged waste, particularly in large landfills like Bantar Gebang in Jakarta, presents serious environmental challenges. These include the emission of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and the contamination of soil and water. Waste4Change addresses this by ensuring all waste is properly processed, preventing it from ending up in landfills. At this year’s brightspotMALL, Waste4Change set up 30 waste points, managing nearly 5 tons of waste in the first week alone. Their services extend beyond events to business and residential clients, promoting broader environmental responsibility. 🛍Revitalizing Spaces and Sustainable Practices: Anton Wirjono discussed the innovative use of Ratu Plaza for brightspotMALL, transforming empty corridors into vibrant opportunities. He shared the challenges of implementing sustainability in events, which have short timelines compared to the more predictable patterns in F&B and retail. Anton also expressed hope for technological advancements to reduce waste in the retail industry. Over the past 15 years, brightspot has championed curation in the creative industry, evolving into a trendsetter and launching pad for numerous innovative local brands through its impactful festivals that attract tens of thousands of attendees. This year, brightspot marks a new beginning of championing sustainability. As a leader in Indonesia’s creative industry, brightspot’s collaboration with Waste4Change is a model of how companies can work together for positive impact. Overall, the discussion was a warm and reflective exchange that inspired attendees to take small, consistent steps towards making their businesses more environmentally friendly. We all look forward to more sustainable initiatives from brightspot and its tenants in the upcoming events, and invite more business players to follow suit.

On Thursday, March 28th, 2024, leaders from F&B companies and sustainability initiatives convened at KAUM Jakarta for a networking dinner organized by Paloma Sjahrir Foundation, Koalisi Ekonomi Membumi (KEM) | Earth-Centered Economy CoalitionEcoxyztem, and Brightspot Market. This assembly served as a pivotal platform for discussing sustainability within the Food and Beverage (F&B) industry. Guided by esteemed panelists, Anton Wirjono (Founder & CEO – Brightspot Market & The Goods Dept), Ratna Kartadjoemena (Partner – Potato Head Family, Chairperson – Paloma Sjahrir Foundation), Lishia E. (Executive Board – Koalisi Ekonomi Membumi, and Andreas Pandu Wirawan (Chief Commercial Officer – Ecoxyztem), alongside the moderation of Arief Aziz (Global Director of Networks and Partnerships – Climate Catalyst), engaging dialogues unfolded, shedding light on pivotal themes within the F&B sector and its profound impact on our planet and society. The discussion unveiled four key insights: 🌍🔥 Urgency of Climate Action: The F&B industry’s substantial contribution to the climate crisis emphasizes its pivotal role in tackling environmental challenges. Globally, it accounts for one-third of greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 70% of freshwater withdrawals annually. In Indonesia, where organic waste constitutes half of landfill content, the need for sustainable solutions is paramount (Sources: IPCC, World Bank, Kompas). 👨🌾💼 Impact on Livelihoods: Half of the global population depends on the agrifood system for their household income, underscoring the importance of sustainable practices for economic stability and social well-being (Source: FAO). 💡💰 Opportunities in Sustainability: The increasing accessibility and demand for sustainable solutions offer not only environmental benefits but also long-term cost efficiency within the industry. 🚀🌱 Importance of Proactive Initiatives: Driving effective change requires proactive initiatives. Encouragingly, there has been a noticeable uptick in such efforts in recent years. Building on the importance of proactive initiatives, Paloma Sjahrir Foundation encouraged attending F&B players to explore and engage with carefully selected sustainable solution initiatives, each showcasing their offerings during the event. The initiatives were Waste4Change & Duitin Indonesia (waste management services), Boolet (used chopsticks & skewers recycle service), noovoleum (used cooking oil collection & conversion to biofuel), Plépah Indonesia (compostable food container), Alner Siklus (reusable packaging solutions), Kecipir (organic & sustainable grocery marketplace), Surplus Indonesia (food rescue app), FoodCycle Indonesia (food bank & organic waste collection), and WaterHub (reverse osmosis water filtration and refill solution). • On October 26th, Asia's premier She Loves Tech global conference kicked off in Singapore. Ratna Kartadjoemena, our Chairperson, joined the panel discussion on 'Women Leading The Climate Revolution' with Benjamina Bollag, Founder & CEO of Uncommon, Cynthia Handriani Wijaya, CCO of Daya Selaras Group & Founder of ECO-S Coworking & Office Space, and Michella Irawan, Tuna Girl & Founder of Collabit. Moderated by Virginia Tan, Founding Partner of Teja Ventures & Co-founder of She Loves Tech, the session spotlighted women's vital contributions to sustainable initiatives, which have been recognized by the UN for their effectiveness in building resilience and capacity. Ratna shared her journey of co-founding the Paloma Sjahrir Foundation (PSF). Her inspiration stemmed from profound experiences nurturing the impact enterprises she has passionately supported. These enterprises, she pointed out, grapple with unique challenges on their path to growth. PSF partners with venture builders to engage with impact entrepreneurs and connects these visionary leaders with potential strategic partners and investors. Aiming to enrich the ecosystem for the impact sector, the foundation's work extends to hosting sector-specific dialogues in carbon and electric mobility. Further, Ratna highlighted the expanding role of philanthropists, not only as providers of catalytic capital but as vital connectors to bridge impact enterprises with broader public and private sector support. Ratna also talked about her efforts at YUAB - Bicara Udara, an initiative that she co-founded with two fellow mothers who shared a deep concern for the air pollution crisis in Indonesia, particularly its impact on the health of Indonesian children. In their quest for cleaner air, they learned, shared, and advocated to policymakers and communities. In this age of climate change and the empowered women leading the charge, the session highlighted compelling examples of the transformative power of vision and collaboration. Let us draw inspiration from these stories and commit ourselves to driving change towards a more sustainable and inclusive future! #SheLovesTech2023 #SLTGlobalConference2023 #SLTMetamorphosis #BridgingEcopreneur

XYZ Factor is an initiative aimed at bringing climate-tech startups to the forefront and providing them with a platform to showcase their innovative solutions. Collaborating with Paloma Sjahrir Foundation and Startup World Cup by Pegasus Tech Ventures, the first episode of XYZ Factor focused on how ecopreneurs can contribute to building sustainable tourism. The event was attended by influential people and key industry players, who served as mentors for the ecopreneurs that presented their solutions. The mentors for the first episode were Sandiaga S. Uno, Luna Maya, and Gita Syahrani, who brought a wealth of experience and expertise in the field of sustainable tourism. The ecopreneurs that presented their solutions in front of the mentors were Bell SocietyCarbonEthics, and Sebumi, and each of them has a unique approach to addressing the challenges faced by the tourism industry. The ecopreneurs showcased business with passion and conviction, highlighting the potential of their solutions to make a meaningful impact on the environment while driving innovation and growth. The feedback and comments provided by the mentors were limitless, providing the ecopreneurs with valuable insights and guidance on how to refine and improve their solutions further.
