One of the things that’s missing from the mainstream news on #ElectricVehicles is how innovation really is everywhere. When the public sector sets a clear goal or target to reduce vehicle pollution or to transition fleets of taxis and buses to zero-emission models, private sector innovation accelerates. This week our Drive Electric team joined ViriyaENB in visiting EV manufacturers and suppliers around Jakarta like PT Hyundai Motors Indonesia, KALISTA, Bluebird Taxi, and VKTR. #cleanenergy #emobility #justenergytransition Suzanty Sitorus Etsa Amanda SatKartar Khalsa Sebastián Castellanos Anthony Eggert Randy Rakhmadi Michael Bosse Ruwadzano Matsika, PhD

"Sustainable E-Mobility: Upscaling Bus Electrification Nationwide" Today, I attended the event "Sustainable E-Mobility: Upscaling Bus Electrification Nationwide," held by ITDP Indonesia and supported by ViriyaENB and The Jakarta Post. In this event, we discuss the issue about how bus electrification plays a pivotal role in the transportation industry's journey towards sustainability. As key nodes in the transportation network, electric buses have the potential to significantly impact emissions reduction and environmental stewardship. However, realizing this potential requires proactive measures and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders involved. Reluctance over cost and initiative remains a major hurdle. The implementation to achieve this target requires strong commitment to planning, determining the number of electric buses, providing charging facilities, and aligning electrification with legal frameworks. At this event, the Draft Roadmap Document and National Incentive Program for the Electrification of Urban Road-Based Public Transportation, prepared by ITDP Indonesia, was handed over to the Ministry of Transportation Republic Indonesia. This document includes a matrix of urban public transportation electrification readiness criteria, stages of electrification implementation, an outline design of fiscal incentive programs, as well as policy recommendations and action plans to realize the roadmap and incentive program. This formulation is expected to serve as a reference for the implementation and readiness of public transportation electrification in Indonesia. #sustainable #transportation #electrification #emobility #bus #upscaling #roadmap #Indonesia ITDP Indonesia ViriyaENB Institute for Transportation and Development Policy Gonggomtua Sitanggang, MCIHT Maggie Tiojakin Suzanty Sitorus

The Bali Matangi Initiative: Fostering Climate Solutions through Women and Youth Entrepreneurship Women and youth play crucial roles in climate leadership, especially at the sub-national level, for achieving net zero goals. ViriyaENB partners with New Energy Nexus Indonesia to advocate for an entrepreneurial approach among women and youth in reaching net-zero emissions in Bali by 2045. Commemorating Indonesia’s Kartini Day of women’s empowerment on 21 April and Earth Day on 22 April, New Energy Nexus is launching two activations focused on women and youth empowerment: the Women-Focused Discussion on 28 April and the Climate Innovation Business Online event on 29 April 2024. Through the Bali Matangi initiative, New Energy Nexus has hosted bootcamps and focused discussions to empower women and youths in Bali to emerge as local startup leaders. These leaders offer business-based solutions to address climate and environmental problems, while at the same time creating green jobs and improving the local economy. “The Bali Matangi Initiative shines a spotlight on women entrepreneurs and young people driving economic growth and empowerment. Despite challenges in access and acceptance, their innovative efforts demonstrate resilience, making this initiative a promising step rallying the island’s community in pursuit of Bali’s ambitious climate goals,” underlined Program Manager Rainy Putri. As an integral part of the Bali Net Zero Emissions Coalition, the Bali Matangi initiative aims to nurture 15 startups led by local women and youths. ViriyaENB remains committed to supporting net-zero initiatives that promote and empower key groups within the society, fostering solutions deeply rooted in local contexts. #BaliNZE2045 #KoalisiBaliENB #Bali #NetZeroEmissions #NetZero #NetZeroIndonesia #ViriyaENB #SubnationalClimateLeadership #EarthDay #HariKartini

Paving the way for Bali’s net zero future through 100% renewable energy on Nusa Penida Island Bali has pledged its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045. Central to this target is efforts to decarbonise the power sector across the province, including Nusa Penida, a group of small islands occupying a total area of approximately 203 km2 off South Bali. Home to a population of 62,082 people and breathtaking natural landscape, Nusa Penida is currently served by a total of 17.06 MW of locally generated power supply, with 24 percent contributed by solar power plants with battery storage. Our partner Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR), in collaboration with the Center of Excellence Community Based Renewable Energy (CORE) at the University of Udayana, presented their findings to the provincial government, demonstrating the feasibility of fully powering Nusa Penida with renewable sources by 2030.    The findings highlight the island’s potential energy reserves amounting to 3,219 MW from renewable sources including solar, wind, biodiesel, biomass and tidal. The study also outlines strategies to integrate these renewable sources into the system over the next six years, including through power conversion system, energy management system and energy storage system. The work aims to provide technocratic and science-based inputs toward Bali's NZE 2045 ambition. ViriyaENB is proud to support the coalition of civil society partners working hand-in-hand  with the Government and people of Bali who have shown strong climate leadership. We strongly believe that subnational action is key to addressing climate challenges and meeting net-zero goals. Emerging from the devastating impacts of the global pandemic, Bali has stepped up to take climate actions, serving as an inspiration to other regions across Indonesia and beyond. https://lnkd.in/gUgSfvDQ #BaliNZE2045 #KoalisiBaliENB #Bali #NusaPenida #NetZeroEmissions #NetZero #NetZeroIndonesia #ViriyaENB #SubnationalClimateLeadership

Energy-related sectors accounted for 44% of Indonesia’s GHG emissions in 2020 (Climate Watch). Projections suggest emissions across the energy system in the country will continue to significantly rise without increased efforts.    Indonesia’s push  to decarbonise energy-related sectors over the next five years is vital, as the country is among the world’s top emission contributors, ranked 7th globally and 1st in ASEAN, with 700 million tonnes of  carbon emission generated in 2022 (Global Carbon Project, 2022)   Industry, transport and buildings sectors combined contribute to approximately 60% of Indonesia’s energy-related emissions. However, despite the urgency, significance, and large potential benefits from decarbonisation, climate commitments and philanthropic support in these areas  have traditionally not been as strong as that for the power sector.    ViriyaENB is dedicated to advancing climate action across the energy system, contributing to delivering progress to achieving net zero goals.  With cross-cutting approaches at the intersection of climate and  development, we support energy decarbonization through policy transformation, sub-national leadership, enhanced action by key groups in the corporate sector and civil society, and the integration of economic and financial considerations to ensure an equitable transition.

The Boosting Energy Efficiency Practices in the Industrial Sectors (BENEFITS) project, a collaborative effort between the Industry Ministry and the Indonesian Institute for Energy Economics (IIEE) supported by ViriyaENB aims to render energy-management practices in the nation's industrial sectors economically attractive. The project underscores the importance of economically viable climate actions. Central to its strategy is implementing Energy Management Systems (EnMS), which are pivotal in achieving sustained efficiency gains through real-time monitoring, control and optimization of energy consumption. EnMS empower industrial decision-makers to bolster efficiency, cut emissions and achieve significant cost savings. Over a potential three-year timeframe from 2024 to 2026, the BENEFITS project aims to uplift energy-efficiency practices in the industrial sector. The initial year involves awareness training for 25 industries on energy-management principles and user-level EnMS training for five selected industries. Subsequent years will focus on a scoping study for specific energy consumption in five industries. The project culminates in discussions about a financial scheme to incentivize the industrial sector, promoting the adoption of economically viable EnMS. The BENEFITS project was officially launched on Feb. 26, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Jakarta. Hosted by the Industry Ministry, the kick-off event was attended by key stakeholders, including policymakers from relevant ministries, representatives from the financial and banking sectors, industry and international development partners.
