How can you conduct a technical training needs assessment for software applications?
In most cases, we don't have deep technical expertise. Hence, we should have a partner from the technical team from the get-go. Ideally, we get someone trusted by the Functional Head or the Functional Head himself/herself. We must ensure they are invested as we are, or it will be an uphill battle. Once we get them, we can act as a facilitator. Ask them what they want to get out of the training then ask them to elaborate what they want to cover. Allow them to talk in technical terms and record the conversations if needed. After that, document that on a page to ensure you capture that properly. Once you have this, you can google the terms to benchmark towards similar training out there. One final note, we don't have to know everything :)

How can you select the best evaluation techniques for your workshop?
As a trainer, I need to work very closely with the organizer. To begin with, we need to set expectations for what we want to achieve from this training. In shorter training, we typically measure learner satisfaction. In more extended training, we measure behavioral change. For learner satisfaction, we use a simple questionnaire. For a behavioral change, we need to give a chance to practice the behavior. For example, after my session, the participants can present their recommendations to the CEO. This allows me to tailor the training to the specific context that helps them perform it well. Nonetheless, it's very important to manage expectation on what we can / can't achieve in a training session

How can you handle resistance to change in instructor-led training?
Take some time to understand what motivates them to come. In some cases, they come because their supervisors ask them to. At the same time, we can be a bit curious and ask them. My favorite approach is to ask them to write down on a post-it what they want to get out of the session and paste that on the flipchart. I get a better understanding of what they want and do my best to accommodate that in the training. Taking it one step further, I also often comment, "I did not plan to share this, but since you said you want to learn it, then I share this." This gives them trust that we have their best interest in our approach
