Ian Karbal is a reporter for the Pennsylvania Capital-Star, based in Harrisburg. He's interested in reporting on the influence of money in politics and the effects of arcane policies on every day Pennsylvanians. Before moving to Harrisburg, he worked as a state government reporter for West Virginia's Mountain State Spotlight. He has also been a media reporting fellow at the Columbia Journalism Review, a campaign finance reporter at OpenSecrets and a local government reporter in southern Illinois. He studied investigative journalism at the Columbia University School of Journalism.

The FBI said early Sunday it had identified the man who shot former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park.
