Meet Leo Sex – An Integral Part of Avoca Hockey Club CLG! Leo is the clubs men’s captain. Sporting Background – I would describe myself as a typical middle aged Irish guy. I love most sports and have tried many of them too, but generally tend of be rubbish at them or at best a one trick pony. You name it I’ve tried it football, golf, rugby, boxing, cricket, tennis – All to a very poor standard! But I’ve loved every minute of it. I love teams’ sports in particular which is what attracted me to hockey. Avoca had a team and type of hockey for people of all levels and ages which for a guy who had spent most of his life sitting on the bench was mana from heaven! Hockey-Specific Background – Played my first every hockey game at 20 for Suttonians Hockey Club after I was asked to to fill in for a game. 7 years after that I joined Pembroke Wanderers Hockey Club with good friend Adam Goggin for a season to play with their 7th team. Nearly a decade (and four children) later, my daughter took up hockey with Avoca and Dennis O'Connor snagged me when I turned up to Give Hockey a Go and I’ve been playing for the club since. Family, Friends, and Business – I have four children with my wife Ruth Tierney. Not only is she the most amazing person in the world (she may read this) she also obviously has the patience of Job to put up with me! I have worked in banking for over 15 years but this year took the first step into working for myself by starting a small company focused on leveraging my experience which has been terrifying but also incredibly exciting. Favourite Personal Success – My family of course, outside of that I won golfer of the year in Portmarnock Golf Club way back in the day. Favourite Team Success – My most favourite team success off the field was building a great team within the bank I worked for, it was great to see the folks I worked with turn into the great leaders they are today. On the pitch my first ever team sports success came with Avoca when our Men’s 4th team won Division 5 of the Leinster Hockey Association League to gain promotion to division 4. We have since gained promotion to Division 3 and our Men’s 4th team is the highest it can be league wise! Why You Got Involved in Avoca – I like making a positive impact on my local community whether it be the Blackrock Credit Union or Avoca or just helping a friend out if it gives a sense of satisfaction and makes someone else’s life a tiny bit better. The feeling that gives can't be beaten. Why You Love Avoca – It’s a fantastic community club. Despite not having the classic amenities of a traditional sports club (clubhouse with bar) Avoca has managed to build a fantastic sense of community and team spirit which we bring to our home away from home the Wishing Well after matches! We’re excited to share the stories of our amazing community members. Stay tuned for more! #AlwaysAvoca
