A project to improve water quality in Bradshaw Brook, a tributary of the River Irwell, took a big step forward last week. We are proud to introduce Jane, the tunnelling machine, which is part of a project to construct a network of storm water storage tunnels under Bolton Arboretum and Longsight Park. The machine was lowered into a launch pit and will now spend the next 87 days tunnelling a 900m route. When complete the tunnels will store more than 3,000 cubic meters of storm water – the equivalent of nearly one and a half Olympic size swimming pools. They will play a vital role in improving water quality by reducing the number of times that storm overflows operate in heavy rainfall. The machine was named in recognition of Jane Wilcock from the Friends of Longsight Park, and she was excited to see the launch. This is just one of four projects that we are currently working on in Bolton to improve river water quality across the borough. This award recognises their joint ME thesis titled ‘The Analysis of the Behaviour of Unit to Unit Connections for Modular Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)’, which they submitted as part of their Masters of Engineering, Civil Engineering with the University of Galway 2023. The Slough sewage treatment works project is a testament to Thames Water’s commitment to environmental sustainability and technical expertise. Under this TOCOP agreement, Ward & Burke will ensure seamless collaboration with partners and sub-contractors, in order to meticulously clean the digesters, remove the outdated roofs, and conduct thorough inspections and repairs of the foundational concrete structures. Ward & Burke's approach is not just about the immediate task of re-roofing; it's about looking ahead and preparing the infrastructure to meet the latest industry standards. The successful reactivation of two digesters, which are now contributing to renewable energy production, is a clear indication of their efficiency and the positive impact of their work. This initiative aligns with Ward & Burke's ethos of evaluating the true cost of an asset over its lifetime and their TOTEX approach, which emphasizes operational efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Slough sewage treatment works has six large digesters that turn waste into biogas, which we can use as an environmentally friendly, renewable energy source. Under the new Industrial Emissions Directive, our engineer John Goode is part of the team delivering a project to re-roof four of these digesters. This work will prevent any smells or gas leaking out around the edges of the covered tanks – the most environmentally friendly way to produce clean energy. We've issued a Transfer of Control of Premises (TOCOP) to our trusted partners Ward and Burke, who are working with us and their sub-contractors to clean the digesters, remove the 1990s roofs using a 1,000-tonne crane and inspect and repair the 1950s concrete floors and walls. They will then build up the walls to accommodate new dual membrane roofs before upgrading the sludge inlet, sludge outlet and overflow connections to reduce the risk of blockages. Finally, they will install state-of-the-art pipework, monitors and a new mixing system that prevents sludge settling. Two of these covered tanks are already back up and running and generating energy to help run our site. Once this project is complete, we’ll bring 128 more digesters up to the latest industry standards so we can keep producing enough power to light up thousands of homes.
