At Zalando, we want to enable this wider industry transformation by acting as a catalyst and connector to drive progress among diverse stakeholder groups. This includes investing in the education of the next generation of fashion designers and providing them with the knowledge to meet the evolving demands of the fashion industry. One of our key projects in this direction is the Circular Fashion Design Course, created in partnership with the Graduate Fashion Foundation. The inaugural Circular Fashion Design programme was successfully piloted from September 2023 to April 2024 in collaboration with the The Manchester Metropolitan University. Building on the success of the pilot, Zalando is now ready to scale up the programme. In 2024/2025, five new European universities will be considered for the partnership, which is expected to reach more than 100 students. “We look beyond our business operations and embrace a role of responsible citizenship within the broader society. Our commitment involves imparting knowledge and nurturing young talent, aiming to foster positive, long-lasting transformations within the industry”, shares Lara Gesche, Senior Corporate Citizenship Manager. When David Schneider and I founded Zalando in 2008, we were facing incredibly difficult conditions: Selling shoes online during one of the worst financial crises seemed like a crazy idea. Despite this, we saw it as a huge opportunity to do things differently and followed through. Today there are growing concerns about Europe and Germany's competitive edge. But Zalando is living proof that this continent still allows companies to grow and succeed. Many international talents have chosen Zalando and Germany over offers from other geographies. We take pride in the fact that today, people from over 140 countries work with us, making us a truly global community Of course, this doesn’t mean that things should stay as they are. Just as we approached things differently when we started Zalando, an innovative mindset needs to be applied to the current challenges. Europe, but especially Germany, must again develop and maintain a strong culture of change and opportunity. Our focus must be on what we can gain and not too much on what we have to lose. By embracing a forward-thinking approach, we can continue to thrive and overcome the obstacles we face.
