  • Enabling Problem Based Learning through Web 2.0 Technologies: PBL 2.0

    Educational Technology & Society

    Advances in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly the so-called Web 2.0, are affecting all aspects of our life: How we communicate, how we shop, how we socialise, how we learn. Advances in Information and Communications Technology (ICT), particularly the so-called Web 2.0, are affecting all aspects of our life: How we communicate, how we shop, how we socialise, how we learn. Facilitating learning through the use of ICT, also known as eLearning, is a vital part of modern educational systems. Established pedagogical strategies, such as Problem Based Learning (PBL), are being adapted for online use in conjunction with modern Web 2.0 technologies and tools. However, even though Web 2.0 and progressive social-networking technologies are automatically associated with ideals such as collaboration,
    sharing, and active learning, it is also possible to use them in a very conservative, teacher-centred way limiting thus their impact. In this paper, we present PBL 2.0 framework, i.e., a framework combining PBL practices with Web 2.0 technologies. More specifically, we (a) explain the theoretical considerations and construct the PBL 2.0 framework; (b) develop a learning platform to support the PBL 2.0 framework approach; and (c) apply PBL 2.0 in a real-world setting for lecturing University students. Pilot results are encouraging as overall satisfaction with the developed platform and good acceptance of the new learning practices is observed. Although the full potential of PBL 2.0 could not be achieved due to different institutional and cultural obstacles, authors believe that PBL 2.0 framework provides good guidance for designing and implementing a PBL course.

    Project Description:
    ROUTE-TO-PA is a multidisciplinary innovation project, that, by combining expertise and research in the fields of e-government, computer science, learning science and economy, is aiming at improving the impact, towards citizens and within society, of ICT-based technology platforms for transparency. ROUTE-TO-PA envisions that Information and Communication Technologies for Transparency must improve the engagement of citizens by making them able to socially interact over open data, by forming or joining existing online communities that share common interest and discuss common issues of relevance to local policy, service delivery, and regulation;

    Moreover, ROUTE-TO-PA aims at engaging citizens to a higher degree by providing a robust and more holistic understanding of transparency, by underpinning the next generation open-data based transparency initiatives, ensuring that published data are those of value to citizens, with a personalized view in different forms to different segments of the citizens and public based on their profiles for facilitate better understanding. ROUTE-TO-PA will deliver the experimented innovative and engaging ICT platforms to ensure citizen-friendly, conscious, and effective access to open-data, by offering easy understanding of, and social collaboration on, open data offered by PAs.

    The objectives of ROUTE-TO-PA are:

    (1) develop a Social Platform for Open Data (SPOD) enabling social interactions among open data users and between open data users and government data;
    (2) build Transparency-Enhancing Toolset (TET) as extensions for existing major Open Data Platforms; and
    (3) develop a set of recommendations (GUIDE) as good practice guide for open data publishers for achieving higher quality transparency through open data.
    The objectives are deployed, tested and experimented in a real setting, with at least 5 pilot studies in five different European countries.

    Project Description:
    The development, configuration and operation of Highly Distributed Applications’ entail many and multi-faceted challenges. These challenges span across the entire HDA’s lifecycle; namely the Software Engineering, the Infrastructural On-boarding, the Execution and the Optimization phase.

    Under this perspective, the vision of ARCADIA is to provide a novel reconfigurable by design Highly Distributed Applications’ development paradigm over programmable Infrastructure. To do so, ARCADIA Framework will rely on the development of an extensible Context Model which will be used by developers directly at the source-code level. Proper Context-Model usage will be assisted and validated by an IDE-plugin in order to re-assure that generated binary contains meaningful semantics. The generated executable should be on-boarded by a Smart Controller which will undertake the tasks of i) translating annotations to optimal infrastructural configuration ii) initialize the optimal configuration to the registered programmable resources and iii) react pro-actively to the configuration plan based on the infrastructural state. Such a Smart Controller will adhere to an Open and Extensible Architecture; in the sense that future programmable infrastructural elements should be smoothly on-boarded. Finally, the Context-Model and the aforementioned ARCADIA toolset will be complemented by a development methodology that will assure that developed Highly Distributed Applications are reconfigurable by design.

    Cloud4SOA: A Semantic-Interoperability PaaS Solution for Multi-cloud Platform Management and Portability.

    Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a novel, rapidly growing segment in the Cloud computing market. However, the diversity and heterogeneity of today’s existing PaaS offerings raises several interoperability challenges. This introduces adoption barriers due to the lock-in issues that prevent the portability of data and applications from one PaaS to another, “locking” software developers to the first provider they use. Cloud4SOA solution is a scalable approach to semantically interconnect heterogeneous PaaS offerings across different Cloud providers that share the same technology. The design of the Cloud4SOA solution comprises of a set of interlinked collaborating software components and models to provide developers and platform providers with a number of core capabilities: matchmaking, management, monitoring and migration of applications.
