Having worked in multiple roles, I can identify gaps and opportunities for improvement and implement creative solutions that enhance efficiency and sustainability. New Developments in Building Technology! We are thrilled to share news from the General Services Administration (#GSA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (#DOE) about their latest initiative to accelerate the path to net-zero emissions in commercial buildings. The GSA's Green Proving Ground (#GPG) program, in collaboration with DOE's Building Technologies Office (BTO), has selected 17 cutting-edge building technologies for real-world evaluation across GSA's expansive real estate portfolio and with partners of DOE's Better Buildings program. This year, BTO is focusing on funding field validations for five innovative technologies, with a key emphasis on decarbonizing commercial buildings and advancing the goals outlined in DOE's "Decarbonizing the U.S. Economy by 2050" blueprint. These technologies span deep energy retrofits, all-electric buildings and vehicle fleets, net-zero operations, healthy and resilient buildings, and advanced building controls. Of particular interest are HVAC #technologies, critical as they account for up to 44% of energy consumption in commercial buildings. The selected technologies include groundbreaking solutions like modular ice-based energy storage, cold-climate air-source heat pumps, advanced air conditioning systems, and innovative building management systems—all designed to significantly reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Since its inception in 2011, the GPG program has evaluated 107 technologies, successfully deploying 23 across a substantial portion of GSA's federal portfolio. This deployment has resulted in notable environmental benefits, including the avoidance of 116,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually and $28 million in annual savings. Looking ahead, GSA anticipates sharing the results of this year's evaluations by 2026, paving the way for widespread adoption of these cost-effective, energy-saving technologies.
