One of THE most important aspects in being able to properly recover your database in case of a failure, is to have a database backup & recovery strategy that is constantly being validated and tested over time, at least twice a year. This is crucial in order to make sure that in case of a real failure, the strategy can actually be translated to an actual process that will succeed. Planning is the #1 factor in assuring a successful recovery in case of a loss, and planning must also include properly testing and fully documenting.

When planning your recovery strategy, taking into consideration two main aspects: 1) How long will it take to complete the recovery process 2) What is the risk related to the executing the specific recovery process Sometimes, due to high risks or long running process, you might need to consider going with an alternative plan, such that will reduce the risk and/or the total time that it will take to successfully complete the process.

First, let the relevant people know about the issue and the potential damage, never try to hide it, and keep in mind that telling the truth is the best lie... Second, start collecting all related logs and diagnostics files and make sure you have everything that is required in order to properly asses the damage.
