Reflecting on My Experience at the Laurie Baker Centre Workshop In May, 2023, I had the unique opportunity to participate in a workshop at the Laurie Baker Centre in Trivandrum, Kerala. This experience deepened my understanding of cost-effective and climate-responsive architecture, aligned with the principles of the renowned architect Laurie Baker. Learning Sessions: Laurie Baker and LBC Introduction: Gained insights into Laurie Baker’s architectural philosophy and the mission of the Laurie Baker Centre. Baker's Approach: Explored sustainable and cost-effective construction techniques pioneered by Laurie Baker. Cost-Effective Construction Technology: Learned about innovative, low-cost building methods. Climate-Responsive Architecture: Studied design strategies that respond to local climate conditions. Hands-On Sessions: Bamboo Construction: Developed practical skills in using bamboo as a sustainable building material. Mud Construction: Gained experience with traditional mud construction techniques. Brick Masonry and Random Rubble: Practiced constructing with brick and stone for durable and aesthetically pleasing structures. Filler Slab and Arches: Applied methods for creating efficient and structurally sound filler slabs and arches. Site Visits: Explored various projects that exemplify the principles taught during the workshop, providing real-world context to the theoretical knowledge. Cultural Exposure: Engaged with the local culture and architectural heritage, enriching my understanding of the region's building practices. Valuable Mentorship: I had the privilege of learning from esteemed mentors, including: Ar. Shubhankar Jahagirdar Ar.Sejal Jangale Personal Insights: This workshop was an eye-opening experience, highlighting the importance of integrating sustainability and local materials into architectural practices. The hands-on sessions provided me with practical skills and a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in traditional construction techniques. Looking Ahead: Inspired by this experience, I am eager to incorporate the principles of cost-effective and climate-responsive design into my future projects. I believe these approaches are crucial for creating sustainable built environments. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Laurie Baker Centre team and fellow participants for making this workshop an enriching experience. I look forward to connecting with others who share a passion for sustainable architecture! I extend my deepest gratitude to 361BIT, the Laurie Baker Centre for Habitat Studies team, and all the mentors who made this experience so enriching. This 170KM Wall is Breaking Architecture The Line is a 106-mile-long futuristic city being built in northwest Saudi Arabia as part of the NEOM project. It’s designed with two parallel skyscrapers, each 106 miles long and 1,640 feet high, with mirrored facades. But this project raises some serious concerns. - It cuts through natural habitats. The Line will stop animal migration, kill off weaker species, and reduce genetic diversity.    - Scientists estimate that one billion birds die each year from building collisions. The giant mirror walls of The Line could increase this number by reflecting light and creating dangerously hot areas. - The question is: Who will live here? A tribal community that has lived in this region for centuries is being displaced, with thousands of members forced to leave their homes. Is building a city from scratch the answer to our problems, or are we just creating new ones? #Architecture #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact #SocialResponsibility #NEOM #TheLine

A Century of History, A New Chapter for India's Parliament Nearly a century ago, in 1927, the iconic Parliament House of India began as a council house during colonial times. Since then, it has witnessed the country's journey to independence and the creation of our Constitution. Today, this building hosts 545 members of the Lok Sabha and 245 members of the Rajya Sabha, making it the heart of India’s democracy. Over the years, however, the Parliament House started facing challenges: limited space, outdated facilities, and difficulties in implementing modern technology. Recognizing the need for change, the foundation stone for a new Parliament was laid on December 10, 2020, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Built-in just two and a half years, the new Parliament spans 65,000 square meters and employs over 60 lakh workers, making it a massive achievement in itself. The building features six majestic gates, each paying tribute to nature in line with Indian tradition. The Lok Sabha, inspired by the peacock, is nearly twice the size of the current one, while the Rajya Sabha, inspired by the lotus, is 1.5 times bigger. This new Parliament is not just larger but also eco-friendly and earthquake-resistant, with 1,700 windows, doors, and 3.5 km of corridors. This is a landmark moment for India, blending tradition with modernity to create a space that reflects our nation's growth and resilience. #sansadbhawan #newparliament #India

India Leads the World's First Hyperloop: First envisioned by Elon Musk in 2013, the Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system that could revolutionize the way we move. India is leading the way by building the world’s first Hyperloop system. Virgin Hyperloop One proposed a route between Pune and Mumbai, which was officially recognized as a "public infrastructure project" in 2019. Currently, around 75 million people travel between these two cities every year, and that number is expected to grow to 130 million by 2026. The Hyperloop will cut the travel time from three and a half hours by car to just 35 minutes! This innovative project could drastically change how we commute and connect our cities. Virgin’s Richard Branson has even discussed expanding the Hyperloop network, proposing a new route connecting New Delhi and Mumbai. India is not just keeping up with the future—it's building it. #hyperloop #future #technology #india

Walking into an Apple Store is a unique experience that stands apart from other retail spaces. You're greeted by a clean, uncluttered, minimalist design that is consistent worldwide, often located in remarkable structures or iconic spots. Here’s what makes every Apple Store special: 1. Minimalist Design: The stores are sleek and simple. 2. Natural Materials: They emphasize wood and stone, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere. 3. Open and Airy: The layout is spacious and easy to navigate. Apple Stores aren't just about selling products—they're about educating and inspiring customers. The products are displayed like art pieces, making the focus more on the experience than on pushing sales. Think about the iconic Glass Cube in New York City—Apple Stores have become landmarks in major cities, redefining how we view retail architecture. Apple has set a new standard for what a retail space can be. #Apple #Architecture #361bit

Why India Built the World's Largest Office Building Surat, known as the diamond city of India, plays a crucial role in the global diamond industry. An astounding 90% of the world's diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. After being polished, these diamonds are sent to Mumbai for trade before reaching different parts of the world. To streamline this process, the Surat Diamond Bourse was established. This impressive $388 million building brings the entire diamond industry under one roof, simplifying operations and boosting efficiency. By centralizing cutting, polishing, and trading in one place, the Surat Diamond Bourse not only saves time and resources but also solidifies Surat’s position as a global diamond hub. #Surat #diamond #india #world
