Myntdu Leska-1, India - Originally commissioned in 2009 by ANDRITZ, in collaboration with its valued and esteemed client, M/s. MePGCL, Meghalaya, the Myntdu Leska-1 project has stood as a beacon of engineering success. Fast forward to March 2024, ANDRITZ was honoured once again with the responsibility of repairing the generator for Unit 1. The journey to this accomplishment was far from easy. Our dedicated execution team braved a myriad of challenges. Accommodation issues and irregular power supply plagued our efforts. The inclement weather, marked by torrential rains, triggered heavy landslides, making commuting to the project site an arduous task. Yet, despite these formidable obstacles, the unwavering support of our client, MePGCL, and the indomitable spirit of our team ensured that we completed and boxed up the unit well ahead of the scheduled six-month period. Our commitment to excellence shone through, earning us a heartfelt letter of appreciation from MePGCL, who were truly delighted with our exemplary performance. Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate many more fruitful collaborations with MePGCL. On the 6th and 7th of June 2024, under the esteemed auspices of NTPC and CEA, a distinguished two-day national workshop on the standardization of technical specifications for Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) was convened. This event unfolded against the backdrop of a projected surplus in variable renewable energy generation—wind and solar—underway and into the near future. ANDRITZ had the distinct honour of being invited to this prestigious workshop, seizing the opportunity to showcase its profound expertise and capabilities in PSP technology. ANDRITZ presented its views on the standardization of electromechanical equipment. It was emphasized that such standardization would be instrumental in maintaining quality and reducing overall project time and costs during execution. In the pursuit of expedited project schedules, ANDRITZ firmly advocates for an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) approach, which is deemed essential for the successful implementation of PSP projects. At the heart of this approach lies the crucial development of trust and openness among all stakeholders, which is pivotal for the seamless execution of a project from inception to completion. Kopili hydropower project, India – Just over three years ago, in April 2021, ANDRITZ was entrusted by our esteemed client NEEPCO with the prestigious task of rehabilitating and modernizing the Kopili hydro project. Fast forward to May 2024, and the final unit of the Kopili hydropower plant was successfully commissioned, with all four units coming online within an impressive span of just nine months! This landmark achievement represents a significant milestone for both our client and the entire ANDRITZ project team, underscoring the unwavering dedication and unparalleled efficiency of everyone involved. This remarkable feat, accomplished just three years after the contract was awarded, was made possible by our customer's steadfast support. Under this prestigious contract, ANDRITZ undertook the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernisation of the electro-mechanical works. Beyond that, we extended our expertise by training NEEPCO's personnel in the design, engineering, operation, and maintenance of the plant. The journey was fraught with challenges, particularly in the final phase. The COVID-19 pandemic, an extremely tight schedule, and flooding in the powerhouse tested our mettle. However, our ingenious engineers, armed with reverse engineering solutions, rose to the occasion, exceeding our customer’s expectations and demonstrating resilience and exceptional problem-solving skills. With the successful completion of this vital rehabilitation project, ANDRITZ reaffirms its commitment to advancing hydropower growth in Northeast India. ANDRITZ Introduces Synchronous Condensers to the Indian Market New Delhi – Amidst India's significant expansion in renewable energy capacity, ANDRITZ hosted a roadshow on June 11, 2024, with the theme “Synchronous Condensers – Enabling Green Energy Transition,”. The event was graced by senior officials from CEA, Grid India, NRPC, CTUIL, amongst others. ANDRITZ took this opportunity to highlight the global market scenario of Synchronous Condensers and its’ know how in the field of grid stabilisation. Our expert, Global Product Manager of Synchronous Condensers, Mr. Robert Neumann, provided in-depth insights into key features of ANDRITZ synchronous condenser technology and its competence in providing a turnkey solution. He also highlighted the impact of inverter connected resources (wind and solar) on the grid stability and the role of Synchronous Condensers in stabilising the grid. The event was enriched by valuable perspectives from representatives of Grid India, NRPC, and other distinguished guests. The robust participation from stakeholders in the transmission and related sectors highlighted the strong interest and support for this need-of-the-hour technology. It was heartening to note that the need for synchronous condensers is well recognised within the statutory authorities and initiative has been taken up in evaluating the weaker nodes in the Indian grid. Power Grid is already planning a pilot project to install ~300MVAr synchronous condensers in Rajasthan. ANDRITZ with its fully scaled-up local manufacturing setup in India looks forward to contributing to the pilot project. ANDRITZ to equip the new Silvan hydropower plant in Türkiye The Turkish water authority Devlet Su İşleri (DSI) has selected international technology group ANDRITZ to supply the electro-mechanical equipment for the new 160 MW Silvan hydropower plant in Türkiye. ANDRITZ will supply four 40 MW turbines, four generators, associated hydropower plant equipment, and a 154 kV switchyard system. Strategically located on the Kulp Stream near Diyarbakir in Türkiye’s Southeast Anatolia Region, the Silvan hydropower plant will be an important part of the country’s energy infrastructure. Once operational, it is expected to generate 681 GWh of electricity annually, making a substantial contribution to Türkiye’s energy supply while significantly reducing the country’s carbon emissions. “We are proud to be part of this important hydropower project and to contribute to the expansion of renewable power in Türkiye,” said Frank Mette, Managing Director of ANDRITZ Hydropower Türkiye. “This project is in line with our mission to contribute to the global transition to sustainable energy generation.” ANDRITZ has been active in Türkiye for almost a century and operates a company in Izmir. Shivasamudram Hydro project, India: ANDRITZ has been associated with Shivasamudram, Asia’s oldest MW based hydro project, having supplied its original generating units way back in 1902. After more than a century, we are extremely pleased to renovate and modernize the project, under the aegis of our prestigious client, KPCL. It is a great honor for us to have the opportunity to address a legacy and adapt it with modern times, thanks to the support of our client. Under the current contract, we have completed the entire supplies of lot 1 & 2 which comprises four units of 6 MW each. Last year, we successfully conducted the model test of the 6 MW turbine in the presence of our client at our facility in Linz, Austria.
