One common hurdle when it comes to learning anything new in today's time, all by yourself, is the overwhelming and unstructured amount of information available at our exposure. Learning coding is no different Having a plan and structure is the most important step, we often miss. What is the syllabus I should cover? What is the route I should be taking? What can I ignore? What should I practice and when in my learning journey? Right, a "learning journey", that's the word I was looking for. Staying consistent is one of the biggest struggles of our learners. Set goals to solve at least one problem daily. Start small with 5 days, 25 days, then 50 days, and then 100 days. Sign up on CodeChef today to learn a new programming skill.
3 months back we asked our users, people who practice coding and do courses on CodeChef: "What are their biggest difficulties in learning?" 15% of learners said they struggle with time management issues and lack of consistency. And that hit home. The solution is simple. We want to encourage our learners to start small. Just one coding problem a day. And to motivate them to do this every day, we have streaks. Do it for 5 days first. Then 25, then 50, and then 100. We get many mentions every day on social media from people sharing their #diamondbadges after maintaining a successful #100daystreak. Keep them coming in! Some even share what they are learning each day as they maintain their daily streaks. This shows their motivation is now more than the badges.
