The project by #RewildingMaforki in Sierra Leone’s Port focuses on giving low-intensity, unproductive grasslands a fresh lease on life! Shifali Guleria and Vinu Jacob from Team Earthood recently audited a land restoration project in South Africa. Years of unsustainable land use and overgrazing have left vast areas of land degraded, leading to a decline in biodiversity and soil that can no longer support healthy ecosystems. The audit focused on evaluating the restoration efforts aimed at reviving these degraded lands by planting Portulacaria afra (commonly known as Spekboom), a resilient species well-suited to the region’s challenging conditions. This project, by Hive Ecosystems, is designed not only to restore ecosystems but also to create much-needed employment opportunities for local communities. During our audit, we assessed whether the project is taking a measurable approach, both in terms of environmental restoration and community involvement. It’s always rewarding to see how initiatives like these blend practical restoration techniques with active local participation, creating a sustainable approach that benefits both the land and the people who depend on it. Biodiversity is under peril owing to the combined effects of climate change and human activity, but there is hope if we act. The Grauer's gorilla and the Eastern chimpanzee are among the most endangered species, and their future depends on the preservation of their natural habitats. This is where the power of focused conservation efforts comes into play. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and Wildlife Works have taken one such initiative through REDD+ activities in the Nkuba Conservation Area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's North Kivu province, which is having a significant impact on the conservation of many threatened species such as Grauer's gorilla, grey parrot, white-bellied pangolin, giant ground pangolin, eastern chimpanzee, and so on. By driving investments to local communities so that they can improve their lives and have sustainable alternatives to forest exploitation for income and well-being, this project limits deforestation and safeguards these critical habitats by ensuring that High Conservation Value (HCV) species continue to thrive. We’re proud that Earthood had the opportunity to audit this impactful project. Ashok Gautam, Dr. Nepolion Borah, Waris Hooda and Emmanuel kasiho from our team took on the challenge, heading out for an adventurous on-site audit.
