Embracing Change In the year 2000, I faced one of the most challenging moments of my career. My father called to inform me that our moped business was no longer viable, it was a tough day that tested my resolve. I gathered my team and shared the hard truth: there was no business and no income, yet we still had salaries & bills to pay. What amazed me was the unwavering support from the team. Not one person left my side. Together, we made a pact to pivot our focus and leverage our core competencies. We reached out to the global automotive industry, sending letters and relentlessly following up until we caught the attention of a North American business development manager. Incredibly, he visited our office for a gearbox RFQ (Request for Quotation). Despite our lack of experience in manufacturing gearboxes, we signed the contract by the same evening and boldly invested in our new direction. The risk was immense, but we persevered, delivering our first products to their European plant in Austria with zero ppm. That leap of faith led to the birth of Hero Motors Limited, a company that now supplies gearboxes for recreational transport vehicles worldwide, with warehousing strategically located in Europe and America. Last month , we are proud to have inaugurated a tech center in London to collaborate with some of “the most prestigious “automotive companies in Italy , Germany and the UK providing end to end solution. From design support to a lean and mean supply chain. Kind of, that we help create an RFQ with the design team of our customers and create an unmatchable supply chain. Hero Motors today has plants across India, Thailand , UK and new facilities coming up in Europe & one across the Atlantic Ocean soon. Now, Hero Motors has many new revenue streams as EDU for 2 wheelers, a very modern facility as a joint venture with Yamaha for motors, CVTs for electric bicycles, drive units for formula cars, both ICE and electric and recently the aviation industry with a complete VTOL drive unit. The order book envisages a 25% cagr for coming 5 years. The moral of this journey is clear: 1) Do not accept failure as the end. Instead, treat it as a lesson that fuels your dreams. 2) Embrace the process, create a roadmap, out of hell and let it guide you to glory. 3) Never underestimate the power of relationships; they are the backbone of your resilience in the face of quality issues, recessions, and unforeseen challenges. Just serve the customer, full stop. I look back and would now say, that day of year 2000 was the best day of my life.
