Researchers from Stanford University and the University of Surrey have created an innovative approach to teaching AI how to understand human line drawings, even from non-artists. This novel model achieves near-human performance in identifying scene sketches, marking a significant advancement in AI and human-computer interaction. Here are some key insights to not miss out on: The team used a combination of written descriptions and drawings to train the AI, leading to higher accuracy in recognizing and labeling objects. The AI showed a richer, more human-like understanding of sketches, with 85% accuracy in recognizing objects like kites, trees, and giraffes. Dr. Yulia Gryaditskaya from Surrey highlights sketching as a powerful visual language, enhancing design workflows and image searching through sketches. Scientists at the Radcliffe Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, have developed an AI technology capable of predicting the risk of heart problems up to ten years in advance using routine cardiac CT scans. Funded by the British Heart Foundation and supported by the NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Oxford Biomedical Research Centre, this research promises early detection and prevention of heart disease, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Here’s a gist: Analyzed routine cardiac CT scans and clinical data from over 40,000 individuals across eight hospitals in the UK. Participants were followed for up to ten years to track major cardiac events, including heart attacks, heart failure, and cardiac death. Professor Bryan Williams OBE MD FMedSci, Chief Scientific and Medical Officer at the British Heart Foundation, praised the tool as a valuable asset for clinicians in guiding treatment decisions and interventions.
