About us
Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) is an autonomous Institution of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. IPC was created on January 01, 2009, and entrusted with the mandate to set standards for drugs in the country. IPC’s basic function is to regularly update the standards of drugs for their publication in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP). IP Reference Standards (IPRS) and Impurities are also developed by the IPC for the quality control analysis of drugs. Additionally, the National Formulary of India (NFI) is published to promote rational use of generic medicines. Since 2012, IPC has been working as the National Coordination Centre for Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI).

Today, US Pharmacopeia welcomed a delegation of India’s top government officials to our Rockville offices. Distinguished guests included Joint Secretary of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India Rajiv Wadhawan, Drugs Controller General of India Rajeev Raghuvanshi, as well as officials from the Embassy of India. This visit marks a key moment in our ongoing collaboration, building on recent momentum toward our shared public health vision. Last fall, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) joined the Pharmacopeial Discussion Group (PDG), an international group formed for the purpose of harmonizing pharmacopeial standards. USP also convened two meetings in Hyderabad, the South Asia Regional Convention Chapter and the USP Science Conclave, providing a vital platform to address pressing scientific and regulatory challenges, ranging from biologics to complex generics. Today’s visit culminated with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, between USP and IPC, confirming our shared goals to: ✔ Strengthen relationships and promote cooperative activities to foster quality of medicines. ✔ Cooperate on the exchange of information to successfully achieve our respective missions. ✔ Strengthen communication to protect and enhance public health and safety in India, the United States, and worldwide. ✔ Facilitate and increase access to safe, effective, and quality-assured medicines and contribute to quality improvement with the help of leading experts from both countries in that field.
