Regular practitioners in direct tax express concerns about India's faceless tax assessments, introduced in 2020 to promote speed and transparency by eliminating direct interactions between tax authorities and assessees. Four years later, tax lawyers argue that this system has made communication more challenging, with a noticeable increase in cases reaching the courts. They find it difficult to effectively communicate complex tax matters solely through audio, as the lack of visual cues from the adjudicating officers hampers their ability to gauge the understanding and reception of their arguments. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁: 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆'𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 Every year, Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what the Earth can regenerate in that particular year. In 2024, this significant day falls on August 1st. This means that from August 1st onwards, we are essentially living on borrowed time, depleting resources that should be preserved for future generations. According to the Global Footprint Network, humanity is using up natural resources, 1.7 times faster than the planet can regenerate – the equivalent of using the resources of 1.7 earths. This Day is calculated by dividing the planet’s biocapacity by humanity’s Ecological Footprint and multiplying that by 365 days (or 366 days in a leap year like 2024). The result is a stark reminder of the unsustainable path we are on. The first recorded Earth Overshoot Day was on December 19, 1987. Since then, the date has crept earlier each year, highlighting the increasing strain on our planet. The earlier Earth Overshoot Day falls, the greater the ecological deficit, leading to deforestation, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity. Essentially, we are using up our planet’s natural capital, which is akin to spending more money than we earn and dipping into savings that should be preserved for future needs. The goal is to move the date of Earth Overshoot Day further into the year, ideally to December 31 or beyond: 𝟭) 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁: Transitioning to renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency and adopting sustainable transportation methods. 𝟮) 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀: Reducing food waste, adopting plant-based diets and supporting sustainable farming practices can help lower the ecological footprint. 𝟯) 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆: Protecting natural habitats, restoring degraded ecosystems and promoting biodiversity can enhance the planet’s biocapacity. 𝟰) 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗨𝘀𝗲: Embracing circular economy principles, such as recycling, reusing and reducing waste. Communities around the world are taking initiatives to #MoveTheDate. Green Policies, Climate Financing, Green Infrastructure, Sustainability Curriculum and Carbon Neutrality all contribute to positive change. Technological solutions, financial incentives for compliance, practicing minimalism, and conscious investing, amongst others are driving this positive change. By working together, step-by-step, we can create a sustainable future where Earth Overshoot Day becomes a thing of the past.
