Explore how it personalizes your experience.👇 X's recommendation system relies on an advanced pipeline to deliver relevant content. This pipeline consists of three main stages: 1️⃣ Candidate Sourcing 2️⃣ Rank 3️⃣ Heuristics and Filters The service responsible for constructing and serving the 'For You' timeline is called Home Mixer. Built on Product Mixer, X's custom Scala framework, Home Mixer acts as the software backbone, connecting different candidate sources, scoring functions, heuristics, and filters to create a personalized content feed. Let's explore the 3 main stages of the pipeline: 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 With millions of Tweets posted daily, X relies on Candidate Sourcing to identify the most relevant ones for your "For You" timeline. X utilizes a diverse set of Candidate Sources, focusing on Tweets from two key areas: Following Your Interests (In-Network): This ensures you see updates from people you're directly connected with. Exploring New Voices (Out-of-Network): Candidate Sources also search for fresh perspectives that might resonate with your interests. The "For You" timeline currently strives for a balance, typically featuring around 50% In-Network and 50% Out-of-Network Tweets. However, this ratio can vary depending on your specific X activity. 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 The goal of the ranking stage is to predict the relevance and engagement potential of each candidate's Tweet. X utilizes a neural network with approximately 48 million parameters to continuously learn from past interactions on the platform, emphasizing positive reactions such as likes, replies, and retweets. Each candidate Tweet is assigned a score based on these predictions and subsequently ranked accordingly. 𝐇𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬, 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 After ranking, X applies heuristics, filters, and various product features to enhance user experience. Examples include: Edited Tweets: Detecting and replacing stale Tweets on a user's device with updated versions. Conversations: Threading replies with the original Tweet for context. Feedback-based Fatigue: Adjusting the ranking of specific Tweets based on negative feedback. 𝐌𝐢𝐱𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 As the final step in the process, Home Mixer integrates the selected Tweets with non-tweet content such as ads, follow recommendations, and onboarding prompts. The combined content is then delivered to the user's device for display. 👉The above pipeline runs approximately 5 billion times daily and typically completes in under 1.5 seconds.
