Addressing Mental Health in the Workplace How many times have you heard colleagues describe feeling “overwhelmed” or “drained,” only to realize those words don’t fully capture their struggles? The stigma around mental health and a lack of knowledge by managers and co-workers can make it hard to seek help. This not only impacts well-being but also affects the business. Imagine being an employee who loves their job but feels utterly exhausted. In one of MHFA training sessions, Meera (name changed) shared, "I would always be wondering, 'Who should I talk to?' And I am sure many of my colleagues think the same. Who should I talk to when I am not feeling well emotionally and mentally?" Meera had been facing mental health issues but didn't know whom to talk to. Whenever she tried to express her feelings, colleagues would simply tell her, "You're exhausted, take a break, eat well." These suggestions, while well-meaning, don’t address the core of her struggles. In fact, they added to Meera's confusion about whom she could talk to and who would understand her without disguising her concerns with fancy words. Here are some suggestions you may consider as a peer or manager: ⭐ Get Well Educated in Recognizing Signs and Symptoms of Mental Illness: This will help you not only pick up the early changes but also respond appropriately, making your staff feel heard and cared for, and acknowledging that their feelings and experiences are real. ⭐Socialize that You are a Certified Mental Health First Aider: This will help your team know your role and confidently reach out when they need help. ⭐Do Not Simplify Mental Health by Disguising it Under Fancy Terms: Use clear and direct language when discussing mental health, giving people permission and understanding that it's okay to talk about it. By implementing these strategies, managers and staff can create a supportive environment where employees feel valued and cared for, ultimately leading to a healthier and more productive workplace. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a global program that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges. MHFA India adapts these principles to the Indian context, providing training and resources to help individuals support themselves and others in their communities and workplaces. How do we help managers becomes people’s manager? Empathy and the right way to carry a supportive conversation in mental health can’t be developed with a simple awareness on mental health. At #MHFA training a good part of learning is practical skills and it is not simple to shift perspectives, unlearn and relearn the right approach. I feel so humble seeing the commitment of #managers from different sectors and industries who never had info on mental health actively absorbing new approaches of being there for the team.
