Leaders who are not building trust in their teams and culture are destroying teams & incurring losses to the company. Trust is the backbone of any successful team in the military or the corporate world. When a soldier comes under heavy fire from the enemy, he trusts that his buddy will cover his back and provide support. They know that when the moment comes, their team members will be there. They even know that if they get wounded, another soldier will risk exposure to save them. In the military, trust isn't just a nice-to-have; it's a matter of life and death. When people put their lives in each other's hands, a unique bond forms—one that drives extraordinary commitment, resilience, and teamwork. Here's how the military builds trust and what relevance it has for the corporate: 1. Lead by Example: In the military, leaders earn trust by sharing the same risks as their team. They don’t just give orders; they go into the mud with team members.  This commitment inspires loyalty and trust. In a corporate setting, leaders who actively participate in projects, especially during challenging times, signal to their teams that they're in it together. A CEO who takes part in late-night crunch sessions before a major product launch demonstrates commitment, reinforcing their trustworthiness to the team. 2. Open Communication: Military leaders foster an environment where feedback flows both ways. Regular debriefs after missions encourage transparency.  Similarly, in the corporate world, leaders who encourage open communication and are receptive to feedback build trust. A manager who actively seeks input from all team members during project reviews shows that every voice matters, building trust and inclusivity. 3. Accountability: In the military, owning up to mistakes is crucial. Leaders who take responsibility, rather than shifting blame, earn the respect of their team.  In the corporate realm, admitting when something goes wrong and working to rectify it fosters a culture of accountability and trust. A project lead admitting to missteps in strategy and working with the team to find solutions demonstrates accountability and strengthens trust. 4. Consistent Support: Trust is built when leaders consistently support their team members. In the military, this might mean ensuring that every team member is well-prepared and taken care of.  In business, a leader who regularly checks in on team members' workload and mental well-being shows they care, fostering a culture of trust and support. Even in the military, trust doesn’t develop overnight. It requires consistent effort, empathy, and transparency. It's about having each other’s backs, sharing the load, and knowing that everyone is committed to the team's success. Ever thought about what keeps our #militaryveterans so strong and determined, even long after they’ve served?  It’s not just the rigorous training or discipline—it’s the unyielding spirit and relentless drive that becomes a part of who they are. This strength doesn’t fade with age; in fact, it only grows stronger. Take, for example, *Commander Sriramulu*, a 101-year-old retired Navy Commander from Visakhapatnam. Yes, you read that right—101 years old and still defying the odds! Just recently, he competed in the World Masters Athletics Championships and brought home not one, not two, but three gold medals. It’s a remarkable testament to his fitness, perseverance, and the unstoppable energy that defines our veterans. Commander Sriramulu’s achievements are more than just a personal victory; they’re a powerful reminder of the incredible resilience and determination that our military veterans embody. Age is just a number when your spirit is fueled by the strength and discipline that only a life of service can instill. If you are a recruiter and have never interviewed military veterans, this experience of mine will amaze you.   Over the past few weeks, I've had the privilege of interviewing several military veterans for open positions in my company. This isn't the first time I've had the opportunity to interview veterans as part of diversity hiring, infact it has been a part of my hiring journey for over 11 years. But each time, it reinforces just how unique and valuable these interviews are. I spoke with seven veterans who had served in the northern and eastern borders of our country and have been in conflict scenarios. Their narrative was always about their team, their mission and preparations, and the outcomes they achieved together. They choose to use only "we" instead of "I." Their focus on team success over individual glory is both humbling and inspiring. This shows the team-oriented mindset they have. They spoke about themselves only when I specifically asked about their role in a particular task. Even then they were extremely modest about their achievements. Not once do they give information about their accomplishments on their own, which shows their modesty and Genuity. All of them arrived early, well-dressed, and came with a level of preparation that was evident during the conversation. These experiences highlight the unique attributes veterans bring to the table—attributes that are often overlooked in a typical corporate setting. Their blend of discipline, modesty, humility, and teamwork is invaluable, and I’m excited about the prospect of having more veterans join our team at MilitarytoCorporate.
