Green Packaging vs. Greenwashing: The Stories We Tell At PackPlus 2024, our panel discussed a critical issue: the thin line between green packaging and greenwashing. I often see people who, with the best intentions, pick up a product labeled as “eco-friendly” and feel a sense of satisfaction. But what do these words really mean? The reality is that most people still use terms like "organic," "natural," "compostable," "biodegradable," "recycled," "recyclable," and "sustainable" interchangeably. This confusion opens the door for greenwashing—a practice that, intentionally or not, misleads consumers about the environmental benefits of a product. Awareness of environmental issues is at an all-time high, yet the understanding of these terms remains vague. This is where the responsibility of brands becomes crucial. It’s not enough to simply label our products with these buzzwords; we must take on the role of educators. Consumers don’t just learn from textbooks or media; they also look to the brands they trust for guidance. A product labeled as "recyclable" might seem like a sustainable choice, but the harsh reality is that less than 9% of plastic is actually recycled globally. Yet, this label can create a false sense of environmental responsibility in the mind of the consumer. Now, more than ever, it’s time for us to move beyond words and toward genuine, transparent sustainability. How do you decide if a brand/product’s green claims are truly genuine, and well intended?
