One of the biggest drivers of co-existence is knowledge. When one equips themselves with the right information, the challenges that stem from coexisting with other species can be tackled mindfully. This is what Sumanth Bindumadhav, Director of Wildlife Protection, Humane Society International India had to say when we asked him about the idea of human-animal co-existence. 🤝 In this video, Sumanth highlights the need for a higher amount of awareness about the species that you share your immediate spaces with, even the ones that are often misunderstood. 🐅 🐍 🐝 Let us know your thoughts in the comments and also ways in which you probably are harmoniously coexisting with other animals, let’s learn from each other! 💬 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the Rainmatter Foundation, we believe in collaborative action with organisations and individuals who work in ecological and wildlife conservation towards a practical idea of coexistence. During the period of the next few weeks, we will be sharing more on this theme, specifically with snakes in the urbanscape so that all of us can together engage in more conversations so that we can share our cities consciously. #shareyourspace #coexistence #nature #conservation

About us
Rainmatter Climate Foundation is a Zerodha-sponsored initiative focused on fostering and assisting ideas that help preserve and regenerate ecosystems. We believe that this needs both direct interventions as well as the enablement of larger platforms that involve a mainstream understanding of the need and benefits of these efforts while also scaling participation in them beyond the philanthropic efforts of a few. Indeed we do not see this as charity; it is an investment into our own future and wellbeing. Amongst our core beliefs is that moving to a green economy and creating green jobs is an essential part of the changes needed for a better ecology. We also think that this needs to happen in a distributed fashion across geographies, with value and job creation everywhere and not being limited to a few urban centres. Reversing both migration and concentration of value, wealth and resources are a major need towards this and will also need a strengthening of public goods and services across India. Rainmatter Climate Foundation is uniquely positioned to influence these efforts in terms of the market and technology skills and partnerships we bring to the table. Additionally, we are committing a $100mn fund towards this over the coming few years. This will be disbursed as grants and funding for projects in the above directions that become replicable models. It will also be used for the creation of open, collaborative platforms that cross-pollinate and scale many good ideas and successful experiments and help create a green economy everywhere. This includes our commitments to funding open-source efforts that help create projects and platforms for climate change and related efforts. Rainmatter Foundation is also incubating and investing in entrepreneurship that helps with these directions and helps move towards a greener, more equitable, and lower footprint economy.

The history of millets is a tale of manifold marginalisations. Millet cultivation has dwindled on the agricultural map, with rice and wheat systematically overshadowing millet cultivation in past decades. This has led to a host of marginalisations: from agriculture that sidelines indigenous knowledge, to diets that are far less diverse, and even in access to the grains themselves—who used to consume them, and who can afford them now. Our upcoming #BeyondThePlate session — ‘Understanding Millets and Marginalisation’— happening virtually on Tuesday, 13 August, will delve into the complex history of millets in India. In what ways has marginalisation historically intersected with how we see and eat some foods over others? How do consumption patterns distinguish and demarcate along identities, ways of life, and access to resources? This thought-provoking conversation will feature eminent panelists including: 🌱 The Big Fat Bao, Illustrator and Design Researcher 🌱 Dr. Bhrigupati Singh, Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology, Ashoka University 🌱 Dimum Pertin, Founder, Gepo Aali. The session will be moderated by Dr. Chubbamenla Jamir, Founder and Director, Nattive Foodsscape Foundation. Whether you’re a food historian, a cultural enthusiast, or simply curious about the intricate ties between food, identity, and power, this event is for you! Fields of View, is building a free to access platform to help Civil society organisations working in vulnerability reduction and resilience to make sense of the community data they collect, and how to put it to use. The backbone of this platform is a simulation tool that we have been developing that looks at the intersectionality of factors that impact vulnerability and how social protection schemes and other resilience mechanisms impact a household's ability to withstand climate, income and health shocks. We conducted a workshop Mid-June, that helped us understand the various conceptions of vulnerability, pathways to resilience and the challenges faced towards achieving these pathways. We had 22 participants from 15 organisations participate in the workshop and contribute to shaping of the platform. The workshop findings shape how the platform’s outputs engage with data to help organisations build more data-informed materials for their advocacy work. Whenever we see a snake in our surroundings, our first response is to try and remove them. We either try to do it ourselves, or try to call someone who can help us in relocating the snake. Gerry Martin, Herpetologist & Founder Trustee of The Liana Trust helped us in breaking the misconceptions surrounding snake rescue and relocation. 🐍 MISCONCEPTION: We should rescue and relocate a snake whenever we see one in our vicinity. FACT: Contrary to popular belief, snakes, like other birds, insects or reptiles we see commonly in our localities, are often not misplaced or wandering individuals, but belong to the area they are found in. They have a crucial role to play in the urban ecosystem by helping keep in check the rodent and other pest populations. In the absence of snakes, these pests would multiply, leading to a chain reaction of more snakes being attracted to the area due to the easy availability of prey.⚖️ Most of the commonly found snakes are harmless and the panic that we often experience is mostly because we tend to bucket all snakes as harmful, leading to a heightened sense of perceived danger. Knowing how to identify the commonly found snake species around us is the first step that we can take to peacefully coexist with them. An intervention by expert snake handlers is only necessary when you spot a medically significant snake indoors. Like Gerry mentions, we also have to be extremely aware that we are removing the snake from the “situation” and not from the “location” to a faraway habitat not native to theirs - which often leads to the death of the relocated snake. ⚠️ Let us know in the comments about your experiences whenever you have come across a snake in your area. 💬 Note - Medically significant snakes are the ones who have been known to cause human mortality or morbidity in case there’s an unfortunate interaction. ~~~~~~~~ At the Rainmatter Foundation, we believe in collaborative action with organisations and individuals who work in ecological and wildlife conservation towards a practical idea of coexistence. During the period of the next few weeks, we will be sharing more on this theme, specifically with snakes in the urbanscape so that all of us can together engage in more conversations so that we can share our cities consciously. #shareyourspace #coexistence #snake #knowledge #expert

Kochi, you amazed us! Our event, Mingle with Millets, featuring a cooking workshop and panel discussion, at the charming French Toast Café was such a wholesome experience. Hosted as part of our Millet Revival Project with Rainmatter Foundation, this meetup brought together Locavores from various disciplines for an engaging millet-filled afternoon. We started with interactive games and quizzes that made us rethink sustainability and appreciate the diverse textures and tastes of millets. Our panel discussion featured inspiring speakers like Sreeja from our #TLpartner producer Forest Post, farmers Rajamma and Usha from the Attapadi Livelihoods Mission, and Rakesh Nair from Svojas Farms, a millet-focused food brand. They all shared their deep knowledge and love for millets; Rajamma’s stories about Attapadi's unique climates and millet varieties were particularly fascinating. During the culinary demo, Locavores got a chance to learn three unique millet-based dishes featuring a variety of our heritage grains in imaginative ways. Our very own Thomas Zacharias showcased The Locavore Millet Bowl, a refreshing, vibrant salad highlighting proso, kodo, foxtail, and little millet. Guest chef Supriya A demonstrated a traditional breakfast called paal puttu made using little millet. This crowd-favorite dish was served with a delicious kadala curry (chickpeas) and a spicy onion chutney. Chef Tsarina Abrao Vacha taught us her Mocha Magic Pudding, a beginner-friendly and delicious dessert featuring little millet, topped with caramelised jowar popcorn. Asawari Jadhav, an attendee, was surprised by how tasty and versatile millets could be and exclaimed that she would definitely recreate the dessert! We’re immensely grateful to French Toast Café for being a terrific venue, our lovely volunteers Nazaf Ayub, Suparna G S,Sumithra Nair, Sangeetha Joseph, Meera Ramkumar, as well as Rainmatter Foundation for supporting these millet-centric events. Which city should we bring our millet magic to next? 💛
