India’s smart metering market is on the cusp of exponential growth. Following the success of various pilot projects across the country and positive outcomes for stakeholders, the pace of smart meter awards and installation is increasing. As of May 2024, over 11 million smart meters have been installed in the country, while a total of 222 million smart consumer meters have been sanctioned. This is a significant increase compared to the approximately 1.7 million smart meters that were installed during 2021-22. According to the National Smart Grid Mission, in 2023-24, nearly 4.8 million smart consumer meters were installed, which is more than three times the number installed in the previous year. The article discusses the current status of discom performance and smart meter uptake...

"EESL’s foremost priorities in the coming years revolve around advancing energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, particularly focusing on two key areas – energy-efficient fans and electric cooking, specifically induction cookstoves. To revolutionise cooking practices in India and emphasise the importance and urgency of energy-efficient fans, we are set to distribute 10 million efficient brushless direct current (BLDC) fans and 2 million energy-efficient induction cookstoves nationwide. Through these initiatives, EESL continues to lead the way in the energy efficiency sector, making substantial contributions towards a sustainable and energy-efficient future for India. Additionally, EESL has recently expanded its energy-efficiency portfolio with the introduction of 5-star rated 6-watt LED bulbs. As part of our ongoing commitment to the UJALA programme, these highly efficient LED bulbs promise 30 per cent energy savings, while maintaining the same level of light intensity. We also recognise the substantial energy consumption associated with common household appliances. The data suggests that approximately 45 per cent of the global energy consumption stems from just 20 basic appliances, with a significant portion used in both commercial and domestic settings. Hence, EESL underscores the importance of targeting the retail sector. To address this, we have recently launched an energy-efficient appliances marketplace (EESLMart), catering to both B2C and B2B segments. It is poised to become the go-to destination for energy-efficient appliances and solutions, featuring appliances including BLDC ceiling fan – 5-star (with remote), BLDC ceiling fan – 5-star (without remote), emergency LED bulb-10 watts, LED bulb-6 watts, 20-watt Int Batten tube light, 1.5 and 1.0 TR super-efficient 5-star ACs. We plan to expand our offerings to include energy-efficient motors, electric bicycles, induction cookstoves and more." Recently, there have been two key policy developments in the green hydrogen space. One, on June 7, 2024, Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited issued a request for proposals for the manufacture and delivery of green ammonia within India. It was been issued as part of the Strategic Intervention for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) scheme (Mode 2A, Tranche I). The bid submission deadline is July 29, 2024. The bidding for the entire available capacity of 539,000 metric tonnes (mt) per year of green ammonia, intended for production and supply, will be conducted through an e-bidding process, followed by an e-reverse auction. A total of 11 projects will be allocated under this tender. Two, as an indirect incentive, on May 27, 2024, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy waived the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) requirement for solar projects and the Revised List of Models and Manufacturers (RLMM) requirement for wind projects to be used for green hydrogen production. This is applicable for renewable energy projects situated within export-oriented units or special economic zones and provides electricity only to green hydrogen (or its derivatives) production facilities situated within these demarcated zones. The exemption from the ALMM and the RLMM will be applicable to all renewable energy projects that meet the prerequisites and are operational by December 31, 2030. This article provides an overview of the policy initiatives in the green hydrogen space and posits that the ultimate goal should be not just the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives but the competitiveness of the final product in order to secure export markets. #greenhydrogen #hydrogen #greenammonia #electrolysermanufacturing #ALMM #RLMM #greenhydrogenexport #netzero #energytransition

The Ministry of Defence, in a publication issued through the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, recently provided a clear-cut demarcation of no-go zones for the construction of wind power projects in states with wind potential. This initiative will prevent wind farm operations from being endangered in the future. It will also enable greater transparency and accuracy, and speedy disposal of applications. The policy move will reduce the risk for developers due to the newly available information on where a project cannot be set up. However, a significant portion of potential wind energy zones, which otherwise had very good potential, must now be avoided due to this demarcation, which is concerning.
