This #WorldHealthDay, #EnergyForHealth program completes 1 year towards the target of powering 25,000 health facilities! Decentralised renewable energy is the catalyst not just in electrification, but in democratising health services making it available at the doorstep of the most vulnerable people, affordably. The partnership with IKEA Foundation and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has resulted in more than 4,000 health centers across 12 states being powered with solar, equipped with energy efficient med tech solutions and built environments. Congratulations to SELCO India on its 30th anniversary! It is no coincidence that SELCO stands out as one of, if not the only, profitable sustainable energy company in the world serving the materially poor. This #solar enterprise epitomizes that access to #cleanenergy is a key catalyst and proven determinant for poverty alleviation and sustainable development! Throughout my over a decade-long journey with SELCO, I learnt many big lessons, which are also key reasons behind its success: - First and foremost, #SELCO’s mission extends beyond the promotion of solar panels and batteries; it rather focuses on advancing social equity and creating opportunities. Or in the words of SELCO’s visionary founder, Harish Hande, the democratization of power leads to the democratization of ownership and essential services like education and healthcare; - Second, SELCO has dispelled 3 myths associated with sustainable technology and rural markets: (a) disproving that poor people cannot afford sustainable technologies; (b) debunking the notion that poor people cannot maintain sustainable technologies; and (c) challenging the belief that social ventures cannot be run as commercial entities. These neocolonial misconceptions persist despite evidence to the contrary; - Third, SELCO serves as a living example of the necessity of good designers and anthropologists, alongside engineers, to address people's needs effectively. Energy access is a catalyst, not a solution in itself. As I witnessed at multiple occasions during field visits, from India's Assam to rural #Ethiopia, concentrating on processes, not pushing products, leads to sustainable outcomes. We need venture builders, not carbon cowboys; - Fourth, SELCO’s success underscores the power of #venturephilanthropy, #patientcapital, #blendedfinance, and attracting mission-aligned investors. We need to missionaries, not mercenaries. It has been an honor to be part of SELCO's journey for over a decade now, from visiting off-grid healthcare facilities in Manipur to solarizing refugee settlements at the Sudanese-Ethiopian border, from showcasing solar-powered school buses at the Expo on Future Energy in #Kazakhstan, to solarizing pastoral ministries at a Summit on #SDG7 & #LaudatoSi in the #Vatican! I would like to finalize my litany with 2 quotes that always remind me of SELCO. First, one by Margaret Mead: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. On the occasion of International Women day, SELCO Family along with SKDRDP celebrated the achievement of women champions from various walks of life. The event marks the launch of an important initiative to support women run rural enterprises in Karnataka & equip them with latest technology for the agri processing and allied sectors. The event was attended by 650+ women across different districts of Karnataka & various other partners of SELCO & Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Program. Shri Dr. Veerendra Heggade & Smt. Excited to share insights from the Bihar Climate Action Conclave held on March 4, 2024! Bihar, a state with rich heritage and rapid development, is also vulnerable to climate extremes. The conclave highlighted Bihar's commitment to a climate-friendly future, aiming to become carbon-neutral by 2070. Key initiatives like the 'Jal Jeevan Hariyali Mission' and the ambitious project 'Climate-Resilient and Low-Carbon Development Pathways for Bihar' were discussed. These efforts, supported by global organizations, aim to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable development. The conclave emphasized the need for innovative climate finance mechanisms, public-private partnerships for renewable energy deployment, and collaborative climate action involving all stakeholders. It also explored the role of multi-stakeholder partnerships in operationalizing low-carbon pathways. The event showcased strategies for climate resilience and sustainable development, focusing on community engagement, women empowerment, and green economy. It highlighted the importance of local resilience and sustainable technologies in combating climate change. Moreover, SELCO India, along with other companies, set up their stalls at the conclave, showcasing innovative technologies making an impact on climate change. SELCO India displayed livelihood products like solar milking machines, solar water pumps, solar sewing machines, and solar inverter systems, educating attendees about the benefits of renewable energy. SELCO India is also working with GIZ India in two districts of Bihar Jamui and Samastipur on the Dairy Value Chain, aiming to empower dairy farmers by intervening with Decentralized Renewable Energy technologies like Solar water pump, Solar Milking Machine, Solar Bulk Milk Chiller, Solar Can Chiller and Solar DC Freezer. Our last day on the trip started with an engaging session with SELCO Foundation and a site visit that deepened our understanding of decentralized renewable energy solutions. We visited a medical facility that had been electrified using SELCO’s renewable energy solutions. We also were exposed to demonstrations of how access to energy can change livelihoods -  demos included, sugarcane juice production, a roti making and pottery making. Thank you to Parmi Savla and Dr Zeenath Roohi and the entire SELCO team for this opportunity. The day concluded with a productive Capstone Session at the hotel, followed by a dance filled closing dinner at Olive Bangalore. As our journey exploring climate change, sustainable development, and decarbonization concludes, I extend heartfelt thanks to all involved – organizations, partners, hosts, collaborators, and my dedicated students. In January 2024, Sustain Plus, in partnership with CInI - Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives, Tata Trusts , SELCO India., and Next Education collaborated to solarize a century-old government higher primary school nestled in the Kodachadri foothills of Karnataka. This initiative saw the installation of a solar-powered #digitaleducation system, along with the addition of four solar-powered street lights. These initiatives mark a significant milestone in our journey towards #sustainability , providing the school with reliable access to electricity powered by #renewableenergy.
