India's Climate Commitment: 𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐤 for 2030 ✅ 🎯 Our Target: reach a carbon sink of 2.5 to 3 billion tonnes by the year 2030 What is a 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐤? A carbon sink refers to anything that absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere than it releases. Trees and forests are the best examples. As countries around the world aim to curb carbon emissions, carbon sinks play a crucial role in balancing the scales. So, what does this mean for India? Let's break it down ⬇️ Progress in carbon sink 📈 🔺 India is making strong progress towards its ambitious 2030 target, having already absorbed 1.97 billion tonnes of CO2 between 2005 and 2019. 🔺 we're the only G20 nation currently on track to keep global warming within the 2°C limit, as highlighted in a recent report by the International Finance Corporation. India's Progress: Growing Economy, Cleaner Energy 🇮🇳 📌 India has surpassed its first Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) targets well before the 2030 deadline, with 40% of its total electricity capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources by 2021, and a 33% reduction in emission intensity of its GDP by 2019, compared to 2005. 📌 As of May 31, 2024, non-fossil fuel sources now account for 45.4% of India's total installed electricity generation capacity, a significant increase from 32% in April 2014. 📌 Between 2005 and 2019, India's economy grew at a yearly rate of 7%, while emissions increased by only 4%, highlighting the country's success in decoupling economic growth from greenhouse gas emissions. Our climate growth 🚀 💸 India's spending on climate adaptation has risen from 3.7% of GDP in 2015-16 to 5.6% in 2021-22, highlighting the growing focus on climate resilience and adaptation within its development strategies. 💸 The government is advancing low-carbon development through initiatives such as the issuance of ₹Rs 36,000 crore in sovereign green bonds in 2023 and policies like the RBI's Green Deposits Framework and renewable energy incentives in Priority Sector Lending which promotes green energy.

Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)'s paper on Expanding Sustainable Finance in the Indian Securities Market 🚀 As sustainability & finance takes centre stage, SEBI has released a pivotal paper to expand the scope of sustainable finance within the Indian securities market. Here’s a breakdown of the key elements discussed in the paper ⬇️ ✅ Broadening ESG Debt Securities SEBI proposes an expanded framework to include Social Bonds, Sustainable Bonds, and Sustainability-Linked Bonds alongside Green Debt Securities. These are termed as ESG Debt Securities, broadening the focus to raise funds for various environmental and social causes, for transition finance, sustainable water management projects, solar energy generation and more ✅ Introducing Sustainable Securitised Debt Instruments (SDI's) This instrument will pool together assets that align with sustainability principles and bundle them into tradable securities. This provides issuers and investors an opportunity to contribute to sustainable finance through securitisation. Core aspect ⬇️ Investors will have new opportunities to contribute to sustainable initiatives, helping India bridge the financing gap required to meet the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ✅ Independent External Reviews To ensure transparency and build investor confidence in these new debt instruments, SEBI proposes robust disclosure requirements and the involvement of "Independent External Reviewers". These reviews will help verify the alignment of the debt instruments with their intended sustainability objectives. Implication ⬇️ This move aims to enhance market trust and ensure that ESG investments are credible and impactful. ✅ International Frameworks The proposed ESG debt securities and Sustainable SDIs will follow recognised international frameworks set by organisations like ICMA, CBI, or LMA. SEBI may also suggest additional guidelines or adapt these global standards to better fit India's needs. That's an amazing milestone! SEBI's move to introduce Sustainable Securitised Debt Instruments aligns perfectly with SustVest's pioneering efforts in the renewable energy space. This regulatory support will help us strengthen our position as a leader in bridging the financial gap for renewable energy projects in India. It’s definitely a testament to the innovation and foresight of our company.

Alaska Just Took a Big Step Towards 𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 🇺🇸 The state has passed its first-ever community solar law. Alaskans can now subscribe to solar panels that aren’t on their own property, making clean energy accessible for the first time to over 260,000 renters and 79,000 people living below the federal poverty line. This law opens the door for residents to benefit from solar power, even if they don't have the right rooftop to install solar panels. Here's why this matters ⬇️ ✅ Community Solar: This concept allows individuals to subscribe to a shared solar energy project (like a large solar farm) and receive credits on their electricity bills. This makes solar energy accessible to renters, those with shaded roofs, and anyone who can't install their own panels. ✅ Financing: This new law comes after a major Earth Day announcement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Alaska Energy Authority and Alaska Housing Finance Corporation received $62.5 million to fund solar projects. These projects will cover everything from homes in cities to larger solar setups in rural areas, ensuring low-income communities across Alaska benefit from solar power. ✅ Target: Over the past decade, the number of states with community solar policies has increased to 22, including Washington, D.C. So far, these programs have installed 6.6 GW of solar power. Wood Mackenzie forecasts that this will grow to 14 GW across the U.S. by 2028. Other key factors 📌 - This new community solar legislation allows Alaskans to tap into the rapidly growing renewable energy sector, supported by bipartisan efforts and federal incentives. - It offers low-cost clean energy and bill savings, especially crucial as the state faces a natural gas crisis and seeks to diversify its energy sources. - Community solar will strengthen Alaska's electric grid and finally make solar power accessible to renters and low-income residents, creating a more equitable energy system. This new legislation paves the way for more equitable access to clean energy in Alaska, helping residents save on bills while strengthening the state's renewable energy efforts.
