Empowering Youth in Climate Action at the Climate Career Conclave We were honoured to have Deepa Ananthapadmanabhan, Founder and Director of Sustera Foundation, lead enlightening sessions during our Climate Career Conclave on both the first and second days focused on "The Role of Youth in Climate Education and Grassroots Climate Action," providing invaluable insights and inspiration to our attendees. Through interactive and activity-oriented sessions, the speaker emphasized the critical importance of climate education and grassroots action, particularly highlighting the role of youth. She discussed the interconnected crises impacting our world and the disproportionate effects on vulnerable communities. Deepa underscored the necessity for youth to be part of the solution, advocating for a proactive approach that combines knowledge, attitude, and practice. Key pathways for youth engagement were outlined, starting with formal education from school to early career stages. Deepa stressed the importance of acquiring additional skills such as leadership and networking. Swapna Vincent, a young professional with five years of experience in the development sector, delivered an insightful session on career opportunities in the social sector during the Climate Career Conclave at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences. The speaker discussed her journey into the development sector and highlighted the importance of addressing primary needs, such as livelihoods, before tackling climate change. She underscored the necessity for specialized roles and heavy investment in time and effort to create a meaningful impact. Swapna Vincent explained the variety of career opportunities available, ranging from baseline research and data analysis to project management and policy implementation. She highlighted the need for external evaluations in government projects to maintain objectivity and improve interventions. The session also touched on the significance of communication and media in the social sector. Vincent encouraged using visual communication, social media, and storytelling to raise awareness and drive change. She pointed out that even simple acts, such as writing or drawing, can substantially impact the sector. Vincent concluded by advising attendees to engage in volunteering and internships to gain practical experience and network with professionals in the field. On the second day of the Climate Career Conclave, held on June 29, 2024, at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, an insightful session was conducted by Gautam Jayasurya, HR consultant and trainer, on the crucial topic of personal branding. Gautam stressed the importance of building a strong personal brand. He outlined the first steps to create one, which include identifying your purpose, skills, and experience. During the session, he led an activity where participants created their brand statements by focusing on their professional roles, talents, passions, target audiences, and engagement methods. Key takeaways from the session included identifying and defining a technical and behavioural niche and strategies for creating and sharing engaging content. Climate Career Conclave Day 3 Highlights; Smart Ecosystem Engineering. During the third day of the Climate Career Conclave at the Department of Environmental Science, Kerala University, there was an inspiring talk by Daniel Lipschits, President and Founder of the Biosphera Foundation, moderated by 🐝Sanju Soman, CEO of Sustera Foundation. Daniel's presentation on Smart Ecosystem Engineering was particularly stimulating. He discussed his professional journey and his decision to live in Kerala. Daniel emphasized that our behaviours significantly impact natural ecosystems. Whether disrupting or engineering these systems, it’s crucial to understand that the ecosystem is a living biosphere where waste is non-existent; one organism's waste is another's nutrient. "The goal is to harmonise natural and engineered ecosystems for a sustainable future". Daniel also stressed that success in the climate change sector isn't just about academic credentials; it's about fostering entrepreneurship and deeply understanding the dynamics of climate change and related fields. Project Hyacinth was noted as a standout example. This project tackles the invasive water hyacinth by de-weeding and converting it into hydrogen through bio-waste management. This innovative approach not only addresses an environmental challenge but also creates sustainable energy solutions. Climate Career Conclave Day 3 Highlights: Exploring Opportunities in the Circular Economy On Day 3 of the Climate Career Conclave, we had the chance to listen to Sarath Kumar, Impact Project Manager at Repurpose Global. Sarath provided valuable insights into the promising future of waste management, highlighting the multitude of job opportunities available for individuals with diverse skill sets. The speaker shared his inspiring journey across various sectors, including water resources, disaster management, and the waste/circular economy. Sharing about the current position in leading impactful plastic recovery projects, he highlighted the role of Project Management and Advocacy. Effective project management and strong advocacy are vital in propelling mass movements and social interventions for waste management and climate action. Sharing his transformative journey in waste management, he emphasised the need for responsible consumption and urged for a shift towards more sustainable consumption habits. Sarath concluded by emphasizing the potential for substantial job growth in the waste management sector following the plastics treaty.
