"I still remember my first day in the classroom," Yash, a 2023 Pune Fellow, begins with a wry smile. "But not for the reasons you'd hope. The classroom was in utter chaos, with a few Students even hurling slurs and abuses at me. It was a rough start, to say the least. But did that discourage me? Absolutely not!" Yash’s classroom challenges extended beyond classroom discipline; many of his fourth-grade Students struggled with basic reading and writing. But undeterred, Yash set out to make a difference. A year later, the transformation is remarkable. Yash’s Students have progressed from not being able to recognise alphabets to reading fluently. A memorable moment occurred during a parent-teacher meeting when a parent expressed heartfelt gratitude: "Thank you, bhaiya. My son was once shy and underconfident and would not even speak in Hindi, but now he speaks confidently, even in English." These victories fueled Yash's dedication. However, the most profound moment came during an activity conducted by a volunteer, where Students expressed their feelings through art. In a disturbing moment, two Students drew images of themselves hanging. The volunteer approached Yash to show him the disturbing illustration. Shaken, Yash knew he had to act quickly. He sat down to talk to them. As they opened up, he discovered they were deeply disturbed by problems at home and, influenced by a movie, had considered suicide as a solution. For the first time, they felt they had a safe space to share their burdens. The conversation was a turning point; they felt heard and understood. Afterwards, they hugged Yash and made a solemn promise: they would talk to him before considering any drastic actions. Interestingly, they were the same Students who had verbally abused Yash on his first day—a testament to how much a nurturing environment can change lives. What makes this change possible? Practicing love and empathy in the classroom. These values allow Students to feel safe, understood, and valued, paving the way for real transformation. Are you ready to do the same? During my volunteering with Teach For India, I had the privilege of organizing a first aid awareness program across 7 Government Schools under the Greater Chennai Corporation. This initiative was driven by the belief that small ideas can lead to significant impact, and I’m really grateful to my volunteers and my mentor who helped me leverage community resources, helping us educate students and staff on essential first aid skills, ensuring a safer environment for all. This experience is defenitely one of a kind, and I would like to extend the opportunities to many more interested medical students.
