🌱🌍 Embracing Landscape Restoration for a Sustainable Future! 🌍🌱 With more than 700 million people in India depending on forests and agriculture, the country needs to transform towards sustainable land and food systems that meet the needs of people, preserve nature, and ensure effective climate action. Landscape restoration, a nature-based solution, is pivotal in this mission. It repairs damaged ecosystems, enhances biodiversity, improves water supplies, and sequesters carbon. By fostering green livelihoods, boosting food security, and supporting vulnerable communities, it aims at nurturing a resilient and prosperous future. Swipe to unpack what landscape restoration means for people, nature and climate. #GenerationRestoration #LandscapeRestoration #Sustainability #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions Dr. Ruchika Singh | Kavita Sharma | Divya Sharma | Srishti Kochhar | Siddharth Edake | Jyoti Yadav | Nabajyoti Roy | Paresh Parab | Shweta P. | Kritika Gadhvi | Anjali Rao Koppala | Oindrila Basu | Raghav Srivastava | Meenakshi Kakar | Dushasana Mahanta

Bengaluru experiences two monsoon seasons. The Southwest Monsoon, from June to September, and the Northeast Monsoon, from October to December. Additionally, the city often encounters pre-monsoon thunderstorms. However, Bengaluru’s water supply is not only dependent on rainfall within city limits for its water, but is also reliant on rainfall in the upper Cauvery watershed. Conditions in the upper Cauvery watershed have a significant effect on Bengaluru's water supply, and during lean periods residents self-provision by sourcing groundwater from in and around the periphery of the city. Urban development impacts the natural landscape; altering vegetation cover, river ecosystems and groundwater levels. Urbanization of a watershed or a catchment area, such as the Cavery basin, has implications for all cities, city regions and rural areas within in. Given the complexity and intricate nature of city-region systems, it is necessary to have regional frameworks at a larger regional and watershed level for better planning and management of water in the system. This requires different jurisdictions, government agencies, businesses and citizens to come together to effectively plan and manage water usage considering uncertainties in water supply. The India Forum for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) concluded its inaugural Annual Summit with avid participation from over 100 private and public stakeholders, laying the groundwork for consensus-building, recognizing innovation and knowledge-dissemination towards mainstreaming the adoption of NbS. Claudia López, former Mayor of Bogotá, Harvard 2024 ALI Fellow and Advisor to WRI, advocated an inclusive community-centric approach to integrating NbS in city planning. Keynote speakers Debashree Mukherjee, Secy, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Rahul Kapoor, Secy, MoHUA, and Dr. Krishna Vatsa, Member, NDMA, joined other distinguished panelists to discuss pathways to bridge gaps and strengthen the NbS ecosystem. The Forum is India's first national coalition platform for urban NbS, enabling cross-disciplinary and cross-jurisdictional dialogue and evidence-building. We have distilled a few key takeaways from the day below: ➡ Addressing climate change challenges requires integrating nature-based solutions with modern technology and traditional wisdom. There is an urgent need to leverage both structural solutions, such as stormwater drains and non-structural solutions, like wetlands, for effective outcomes. ➡ Integration of local communities to address capacity issues within NbS is pivotal, especially the inclusion of women and our most vulnerable urban citizens, at all levels of decision-making and implementation. ➡ NbS help build our case to prioritise ecological concerns by emphasising how they align with "human" priorities. ➡ Financing NbS at scale requires a community-driven, multi-faceted approach involving government, impact investors, philanthropy, and eventually commercial capital. With these insights and the momentum generated by the Summit, the Forum will continue to cut across silos, capacitating stakeholders and driving collective action towards scaling-up and unlocking the potential of NbS. Globally, Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are emerging as a high-impact strategy for improved air quality and living environment in cities. LEZs are urban areas with targeted measures to reduce vehicular emissions and traffic congestion. While these have proven effective globally, they are relatively a new concept in Indian cities. #WRIIndia earlier today organized a roundtable discussion, 'Implementing Low Emission Zones for Cleaner Air in India,' which delved into the potential framework for LEZs in Indian cities. The deliberation focused on implementing LEZs in the Indian context, sharing experiences from cities like Pune, Varanasi, Indore, and Chennai among others. Key Takeaways: ➡️ The need of the hour is to develop a short-term and practical plan that can lead to long-term impact ➡️ Enabling a regulatory framework with policymakers through collaboration and strategic planning ➡️ Adopting phased implementation of LEZs citywide through a multi-stakeholder approach ➡️ Understanding socio-economic impacts of LEZs to build an inclusive and equitable ecosystem to improve quality of life for vulnerable groups ➡️ Building and customizing solutions for implementing LEZs to the Indian context #LowEmissionZones #CleanAirForAll #TogetherForCleanAir #ACAAS #EVMatters #CleanAirMatters #SustainableCities Preeti Gehlot | Ashish Tiwari | Felipe Ramírez Buitrago | Madhav Pai | Pawan Mulukutla | Chaitanya Kanuri | Kaustubh Gosavi | Kaustubh Chuke | Kanika Gounder | Prakash Doraiswamy | Bhavay Sharma | Prayash Giria | Harish Phuleria | mukesh khare | Gitakrishnan Ramadurai | NITI Aayog | Clean Air Fund | Open Philanthropy | Bloomberg Philanthropies | Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation | Venkat Jayagopi | Greater Chennai Corporation | Indore Municipal Corporation | The International Council on Clean Transportation | ITDP - India | C40 Cities | ICLEI | Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH | UITP | Artha Global | TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute
