The article provides an overview of the challenges and the state of the art of the discipline of Enterprise Architecture (EA), with emphasis on the challenges and future development opportunities of the underlying Information System (IS), and its IT implementation, the Enterprise Information System (EIS). The first challenge is to overcome the narrowness of scope of present practice in IS and EA, and re-gain the coverage of the entire business on all levels of management, and a holistic and systemic coverage of the enterprise as an economic entity in its social and ecological environment. The second challenge is how to face the problems caused by complexity that limit the controllability and manageability of the enterprise as a system. The third challenge is connected with the complexity problem, and describes fundamental issues of sustainability and viability. Following from the third, the fourth challenge is to identify modes of survival for systems, and dynamic system architectures that evolve and are resilient to changes of the environment in which they live. The state of the art section provides pointers to possible radical changes to models, methodologies, theories and tools in EIS design and implementation, with the potential to solve these grand challenges. The conference was jointly organized by the National Taiwan University of Health Sciences and the Association of Enterprise Architects, Taipei.

Chaired the government enterprise architecture track and delivered an invited session "Ahead of the curve - Connected Government with Enterprise Architecture". The event was co-organized by the UNDESA and Government of Kazakhstan.

Keynote session delivered as part of the 10th International Conference in Knowledge Community held in Taipei, Taiwan.

This Forrester paper cites and advocates the Systemic Enterprise Architecture approach. According to the paper authors "in our research we worked closely with the National University of Singapore, where Dr. Pallab Saha is pioneering the enterprise architecture discipline of systems thinking."

Enterprise Architecture is defined as the ongoing process of building the ability to manage complexity, with the pivotal goal of creating and sustaining coherent enterprises. This book views enterprises as complex systems, and advocates the need for enterprise architects to, therefore, think in systems. Enterprises are increasingly faced with priorities resulting from complex interactions as interconnections, feeding, amplifying and ameliorating the effects of each other. The book demonstrates why in this environment, enterprise architects, must move beyond a linear “cause-effect” view of the world; not only, in their evaluation of the strategic landscape, but also in considering the effects of their interventions (architecture initiatives). Architects must think of outcomes as an aggregate effect of a set of interrelated actors leading to a more robust framework for choosing a course of action. Similarly, thinking of the “feedback” effects in the system allows enterprise architects to anticipate some of the delayed effects of implemented actions. Case studies and examples make up more than half the content to keep it relevant. Adequate theory and concepts are included to provide methodological / content rigor.
