*ABSTRACT*
There has been a rapid change in the landcover/land use in the mangrove cover in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. Previously studies have employed RS-GIS to assess changes in the mangrove habitat around Mumbai and the coastline of India. The landcover/land use has changed very fast due to intense population pressure, conversion to agricultural land and fish farms, construction and developmental activities, in addition to the effect of industrial effluents in the coastal areas. The changing land use pattern in the coastal areas of Mumbai is threatened to be flooded by sea-level rise; global sea levels could rise by an average of 1 to 2 meters by 2100. The coastline along Mumbai has never been static, but the loss of mangrove forests along the coast has intensified coastline change. The objective of the present study is the spatio-temporal change detection in mangrove cover in chosen sites of Mumbai using RS and GIS. To detect changes in land use, two satellite images of the same season, acquired by LISS 3 sensor of Resourcesat, from the Bhuvan website were used. The landcover/land use classes selected for the study are water, mangrove forest, open vegetation, settlements and others. The unsupervised classification technique is used to classify images. After the classification, it can be seen that there is a change in the land use land cover change of the area. The mangrove cover in the Thane creek area has been increased while the mangrove cover in the New Mumbai Airport area has drastically decreased due to developmental activities.
