For the past few years, I’ve had this charming three-foot-tall Christmas tree in my kitchen. I would adorn it with lights and ribbon and fill it with vintage cookie cutters, making it one of my favorite holiday decorations.
Last week, my mom was visiting and helping me with a few things. Since she set up this kitchen tree for me last year, I asked if she’d like to do it again, and she happily agreed. While gathering the tree and cookie cutters from the attic, inspiration struck. Why not fill the tree with my collection of mushroom ornaments this year? And just like that, a new plan was born.
You might remember my mushroom ornaments from a red and white-themed Christmas tree I did a few years ago. I filled the tree with all the mushroom ornaments I had. In fact, these mushroom ornaments go back even further as I used them on a flocked tree I decorated in my previous house in 2017.
With this new idea, I set up the tree in its usual spot by tucking it into a large pottery bowl (from Crate and Barrel, but no longer sold.) on top of a vintage wooden stool. I added my favorite fairy lights and a cute red ticking ribbon, and then my Mom and I hung, tucked in, and clipped on all of the mushroom ornaments that would fit. In just a few minutes, this small, yet striking mushroom-inspired tabletop Christmas tree was complete, and I couldn’t be happier with the result!
However, I should mention that this little tree isn’t quite sturdy enough to support all these ornaments! It tends to lean a bit and requires occasional adjusting. I’m even considering redecorating it to add more support.
(Also, I do apologize, but I don’t have a link to this tree as I bought it at a small shop years ago. But there are plenty of adorable tabletop trees available these days.)
Why Mushrooms at Christmas?
Mushroom ornaments symbolize good fortune or luck. Finding a mushroom in the woods is always special, just like stumbling upon a dollar bill. These ornaments not only add a fun, whimsical touch but also show honor to nature and hope for a prosperous new year.
Did you know that mushrooms are also believed to be a favorite food of reindeer?

Where to Buy Mushroom Ornaments
Most of the mushroom ornaments on my tree are over five years old, so I don’t have direct links to them. However, I’ve curated a list of my current favorites that I would buy today. My ornaments are glass, and I’ve focused on similar ones in my recommendations. They can be pricey, but you can find reasonably priced ones with a bit of searching.
If you’re feeling crafty, check out my DIY Clay Mushroom Tutorial right here on the blog. The ones I made were done in blues and greens, but you can choose any color(s) you like. Mushroom ornaments are trending now, but they’ve also been a Christmas decor staple for years, so vintage or thrift stores can be great places to find unique pieces.
