he 2020-model Arizona International Auto Show returns to Phoenix for Thanksgiving weekend Thursday, Nov. 28 through Sunday, Dec. 1. 2020 AUDI A5

2020 AUDI A4/S4 • Base price (incl. destination): $45,200 (A5); $53,400 (S5); $75,200 (RS 5)

For buyers preferring two doors to four, and fashionably good looks, the A5 might be the right fit. And if you prefer the convenience of a sedan but still want to make a fashion statement, then Audi can oblige with the fourdoor A5 Sportback. The chief drawback is that adults using the rear seat will have to squeeze to enter and exit. Of course the two-door is a bit worse, but that’s to be expected. The powertrain is a 248-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a paddle-shifted seven-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel-drive is standard. The S5 — available in two and four-door styles — uses a 354-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic. For serious performance, the new RS 5 Sportback puts out 444 twin-turbocharged horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. At $75,200, going fast and looking cool doesn’t come cheap.

STATUS: Minor changes for 2020 — The A4 combines handsome and sporty into one exactingly tidy package. New for this model year is an attractive new grille and nose, large headlight pods and LED taillights. The interior is at least as spacious as that of its peers, and rear legroom is especially generous. A 190-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is installed in front-wheel-drive models, but all-wheel-drive mandates a 248-horsepower engine that gets a slight assist from a 12-volt battery (which helps fuel economy). The S4 perks things up with 354 horsepower delivered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. A paddle-shift seven-speed automatic transmission is hitched to the A4, while the S4 gets an eight-speed automatic. The AWD system includes a launch-control program: put the transmission in Sport mode, push the brake pedal, then push the gas pedal to the floor. When ready to launch, simply lift your foot off the brake pedal. The A4 could be considered an alternative to a fully equipped, similarly priced Honda Accord, or Toyota Camry.

2020 AUDI Q5/SQ5

Plug-in hybrid model expected for 2020 — Now built in Mexico, the midsize Q5 was updated for 2018 and with a stiffer and lighter platform that also underpins other Audi and Volkswagen models. The base engine is a 242-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The hotter SQ5 has a 354-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi claims the Q5 will reach 60 mph from rest in 5.9 seconds, while the SQ5 does it in 5.1. For the 2020 model year, a 367-horsepower plug-in hybrid drivetrain is available, consisting of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor. The standard Quattro all-wheel-drive engages the rear wheels only when tire slip is detected.

There are reshaped front and rear ends and a makeover for the dashboard and control-panels screens. Dimensionally, there’s nothing new to report, which means you still get three rows of seats as standard, although the power-folding third row is a tight squeeze for adults. With the second and third rows folded, you get a completely flat load floor, which is something of a rarity these days. The base turbocharged four-cylinder engine can be substituted for an optional supercharged V-6. Both get an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive. Base-model equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, power-folding third row, tri-zone climate control and hands-free power liftgate. As well, towing capacity is a respectable 4,400 pounds.

• Transmission: 10-speed automatic • Drivetrain: Front- /allwheel-drive Status: Unchanged for 2020 — Acura’s redesign of the RDX utility vehicle for the 2019 model year injected a strong dose of styling to dovetail with its practical nature and stellar performance. The interior is as radically different as the outside, with a dashboard replete with swoops and swirls that deviate from the less organic shapes found in competing models. A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine puts 272 horsepower to a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, and Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) is optional. In normal traction conditions it sends 70 percent of the engine’s torque to the rear wheels, but can direct up to 100 percent to the outside rear wheel when turning. This yaw control increases cornering precision and stability. The stiffer platform and sport-tuned suspension contribute to the vehicle’s exceptional ride and handling qualities, especially over choppy roads. Every RDX comes with dual-zone climate control, panoramic moonroof, 12-way power-operated and heated front seats, power tailgate and 19inch wheels. The sharp-looking A-Spec trim adds more technology and unique exterior styling, although no more performance.

2020 BUICK ENCORE

A longer GX model with more room is added for 2020 — This small and tall wagon proves that luxury is not in proportion to the size of the vehicle. The Encore uses the same basic architecture as the Chevrolet Sonic sub-compact, although the Buick is about seven inches longer and five inches taller. The front passenger seat folds flat so that ladders and building materials can be more easily accommodated. The interior is quite fashionable and smacks of quality. Standard active-noise cancellation uses ceiling-mounted microphones to detect engine sounds, at which point counteracting sound waves are issued through the audiosystem speakers. A 138-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is standard, but the optional 153 horsepower turbo I-4 is no longer available. For 2020, Buick is selling the Encore GX, which is larger than the basic Encore and sports a different design. There’s no official word as to pricing or powertrain details, but the rumor is that a turbocharged three-cylinder will be standard.

• Transmission: Eightspeed automatic The automaker has created an attractive follow-up to the original Z4 that was retired after 2017 model year, but there was some help from Toyota. The two brands cooperated on the Z4 roadster and Supra sport coupe, specifically for the structural development. The resulting BMW version is nearly four inches longer than the previous convertible (most of that increase is ahead of the engine bay) but is shorter between the front and rear wheels by about an inch. The power-operated soft top also deviates from the original Z4’s rather complex — and heavier — folding hardtop. The dashboard and controls are simple with a single-screen gauge display plus an information/navigation screen controlled by a rotary dial on the floor console. Standard in the Z4 sDrive30i is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Moving up to the sDrive M40i brings a turbocharged six-cylinder with 382 horsepower, which is 47 more than in the Supra gets. An eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters is the sole transmission.

STATUS: New for 2020 — The upheaval at Cadillac has seen many comings and goings, especially in the passenger-car group. Departures include the ATS coupe (the sedan was sent packing for 2019), CTS and XTS sedans and the CT6 sedan that is reportedly leaving in early 2020. In their place are the compact CT4 and midsize CT5 sedans. Although Cadillac officially refers to the CT5 as a compact car, it’s actually larger than both the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry in length, width and distance between the front and rear wheels. From a design standpoint, the CT5 earns big points for its taut shape, including a tall fastback roofline that should create plenty of head and legroom for rear-seat riders. The base engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 237 horsepower and 258-pound-feet of torque. Optional is a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 335 horses and 400 pound-feet. A sporty CT5-V model ups the output to 355 horsepower, but with no change in torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission is standard and allwheel-drive is optional for all. Four trim levels are offered.

2020 FORD ESCAPE

The new Escape is a radical departure from the previous model. The low-slung body contains not one crease or right angle, but instead is loaded with has curvy shapes from front to back. The sheet metal attaches to a platform that’s larger than before, but not by much. Owing to the lower profile, body height is reduced, but maximum cargo volume has actually expanded by a few cubic feet. Drivers can reconfigure the available 12.3-inch electronic gauge and info cluster according to personal preferences. The rear seat can also be adjusted fore and aft, or folded flat for greater legroom or cargo space. Powertrain choices begin with a 180-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine. Cylinder deactivation shuts down one of them, when not required, to conserve fuel. A 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is optional. The Escape hybrid’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder is paired with an electric motor, generating a net 198 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid is rated at 209 horses and has a maximum 30-mile electric range before the gasoline engine engages.

• Engines (h.p.): 2.3-liter I-4, turbocharged (300); 3.0-liter V-6, twinturbocharged (365-400); 3.3-liter V-6 with electric motor (318) The sixth-generation Explorer switches to a rear-wheeldrive platform from front-wheel-drive, which means the engines are no longer mounted sideways. The new Explorer is slightly longer than its predecessor, but the wheelbase has been increased by about six inches. Ford says this benefits occupants in all three rows. A rotary dial replaces the traditional shifter and allows for unfettered access to the audio and climate controls, plus an available wireless charging phone pad. Base models come with a 2.3-liter turbocharged fourcylinder producing 300 horsepower. Optional is a 3.0-liter twinturbocharged V-6 with 365 horsepower. That number climbs to 400 horsepower when the hotter ST model is specified. For top fuel efficiency there’s the Explorer Hybrid, which links a turbocharged 3.3-liter V-6 to an electric motor for a combined 318 horsepower. All models come with 10-speed automatic transmissions. All-wheel-drive is available with the turbo fourcylinder and the Hybrid, and is standard with the V-6.

2020 CADILLAC XT5

2020 CADILLAC ESCALADE

STATUS: Unchanged for 2020 — The Escalade and extended-size Escalade ESV are more like luxury staterooms or rolling penthouses than mere modes of transportation. These Caddy models combine first-class comfort and performance with all-road capability that’s shared with General Motors’ more modestly priced Chevrolet Tahoe/ Suburban and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL relatives. The ESV is 20 inches longer than the standard Escalade and it has a 14-inch wheelbase advantage. That translates into a considerable gain in cargo space with both rear seats folded or with the standard third-row seat in use. Power comes from a Chevrolet-Corvette-based 6.2-liter V-8 that’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Cadillac claims the Escalade can hit 60 mph from rest in less than six seconds, which is quick for a vehicle that weighs close to three tons. Rear-wheel-drive is standard and fourwheel-drive is optional: The system can be left in fully automatic mode, or in manually selected “4 HI” for added traction in mud and snow. Although the Escalade is unquestionably off-road capable, you’re not likely to find too many crawling over rocks in the desert.

Ford continues to dominate the light-duty pickup segment and will likely maintain that position with continuous improvements to the F-150. Most recently was the arrival of Ford’s Power Stroke V-6 turbo-diesel to the lineup. It’s rated at 440 poundfeet of torque and 22 mpg in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg, combined. Doubtless aiding the conservation of fuel is the auto-stop/start program that shuts off the engine when briefly stopped. The rest of the powertrain lineup includes a V-6, two turbocharged V-6s and a non-turbo V-8. All choices are connected to 10-speed automatic transmissions, other than the base non-turbo V-6 that uses a six-speed automatic. The returning F-150-based 450-horsepower Raptor comes with electronically controlled Fox-brand shocks, a Trail Control system that keeps the pickup from breaking loose when heading downhill, and available Recaro-brand front seats. A new F-150 is slated for the 2021 model year. Will Ford make it out aluminum like the current version? Stay tuned.

The Stingray comes with a 6.2-liter V-8, dubbed the LT2, producing 495 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet claims the car can sprint to 60 mph from zero in less than three seconds. Helping achieve that number is a Tremec eight-speed automated-manual (dual clutch) transmission with paddle shifters. No manual transmission is offered. Cargo space is tight, but with the removable roof panel in place — a folding-hardtop convertible will also be offered — there’s room for a set of golf clubs behind the engine, while in front you can pack a carry-on-size bag plus a lap top computer. With a base price of $60,000 (about $7,500 more for the convertible), the new Corvette becomes a bargain-basement supercar that should match or exceed the performance of similar models costing considerably more.

2020 CHEVROLET COLORADO

The Equinox has been a steady performer for Chevrolet dating back to 2005. The current generation that arrived for the 2018 model year was downsized, dropping about 400 pounds in the process. The Equinox still looks like an Equinox, however, thanks to a familiar grille and roof pillars. For 2020, the powertrain lineup mostly carries over with a 170-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder and an optional 252-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Gone, however, is the 1.6-liter turbo-diesel that was never a popular choice, despite being the fuel miser of the group. The base 1.5 connects to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.0 gets a nine-speed automatic. All-wheeldrive is optional regardless of engine choice. Standard for 2020 are some previously optional dynamic safety technologies. Newly available is a Safety Alert driver’s seat that’s designed to assist the hearing impaired. It supplements the vehicle’s audible warnings with additional seat-cushion vibrations if the driver strays out of the intended lane, or closes too rapidly on the vehicle in front.

Each version can be had with a gasoline or turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, or a V-6. All three are hooked up to automatic transmissions, but base 2.5 is your only choice if you want a manual gearbox. The 4x4 turbo-diesel is the go-to for hauling payloads up to 1,800 pounds, or trailering up to 7,700 pounds. For off-roading, the ZR2 trim’s unique front and rear bumpers help provide additional ground clearance and the aluminum skid plates protect the radiator, oil pan, suspension and transfer case. The grille and hood are ZR2 exclusives, as are the special off-road dampers, 31-inch tires and the functional off-road rockerpanel protection. Chevrolet also added the ZR2 Bison that comes with hardcore gear for more severe off-roading. Most visibly, there’s an engine snorkel to keep fresh air entering the engine — instead of water — when fording deep rivers.

Chevrolet’s 2500- and 3500-series heavy-duty trucks are intended to be hard working commercial rigs. That’s why the stuff they haul is called “payload,” since many buyers count on these trucks for their livelihoods. The latest Silverado HD is new from the ground up, including humongous grilles attached to larger bodies that are the very definition of in-your-face styling. The usual assortment of cabs is available, including the double-cab with rear doors that are hinged at the front. As well, both 66-inch and 96-inch cargo boxes can be had. The new base 6.6-liter V-8 is rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, which is up from the previous 6.0-liter V-8’s 360/380 numbers. It works through a six-speed automatic transmission. A 10-speed automatic is employed with the returning 6.6-liter turbo-diesel that puts out 445 horsepower and 910 poundfeet. Expect to pay about $10,000 more for the diesel option. The HD 3500’s maximum towing capacity is 35,500 pounds, while the 2500-series max rating is 18,500 pounds. Of course there are a wide variety of trim levels and content choices available, culminating with High Country that’s literally brimming with over-the-top luxury.

The dashboard has modern graphic displays and an available mood-lighting system with six different settings that pulse to the beat of the music played through the audio system. The interior spacious, with plenty of head and legroom for even the tallest occupants. For 2020, a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder base engine produces 147 horsepower, while the optional turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder carries over unchanged at 201 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for the base Soul, while a continuously variable unit is available on that model, but standard on upper trims. The GT-Line 1.6T is the only model equipped with the turbo engine, which is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

Both can hold up to eight people (seven, if you select the optional second-row bucket seats). With a full load, the Telluride can still provide as much cargo capacity as most of its contemporaries, and pull up to 5,000 pounds of trailer weight. The interior eschews any hint of superfluous excess, while the dashboard is elegantly turned out, including the 8.0- or optional 10.3-inch touchscreen perched above the air vents. In back, both rows fold practically flat and the load floor lifts up to reveal a generously proportioned stowage compartment. The sole powerplant is a 3.8-liter V-6 that puts out 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of maximum torque. It’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The optional all-wheel-drive system — available with all trims — directs 100 percent to the front wheels in Eco or Smart modes, while Comfort and Snow modes split it 80:20 front to rear. For more aggressive driving, the Sport mode split is 65:35. In Lock mode, the system’s Downhill Brake Control can be engaged to keep the Telluride moving at a controlled (slow) rate.

A previous update resulted in more liftgate glass area to improve visibility, and a slightly lower load floor made cargo handling easier. The stowage area behind the split-folding rear seat was also increased by about 18 percent. Ultimately, it doesn’t measure up to Honda CR-V or Volkswagen Tiguan for size (consider the Kia Sorento instead). Powerplants consist of a non-turbo base engine or optional turbocharged four-cylinder. All-wheel-drive is available no matter which engine you pick. The system includes a locking differential that splits the torque equally between the front and rear wheels and is intended for more severe excursions. All models are decently equipped, but the top performer SX Turbo comes with a 320-watt Harmon Kardon-brand stereo, panoramic sunroof and a full suite of crash-avoiding/mitigating safety technology.

What’s striking about the midsize Optima is the physical similarities to the larger Cadenza sedan. As with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the Optima is also available in hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions (the latter in limited U.S. states). Buyers can choose from an assortment of four-cylinder engines, including two nonturbo and two turbocharged powerplants. The hybrid uses a six-speed automatic transmission (not the usual continuously variable kind) and is the fuel-economy champ of the bunch with a combined city/highway rating of 42 mpg. Of course that’s excluding the plug-in hybrid that provides up to 28 miles of electric-only range and is rated the equivalent of 101 mpg in combined city/highway driving. Given its high value quotient, the Optima’s classy looks and 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty are just icing on the cake.

2020 LINCOLN NAVIGATOR

Compared to the outgoing MKC five-passenger compact wagon, the new Corsair has a larger grille, crisper fender and door panel creases and a cleaner-looking liftgate. Overall length, width and wheelbase have also increased slightly and contribute to more stowage capacity behind the back seat and behind the front seats when the second row is folded flat. The Corsair’s simplified dashboard improves on the MKC’s flight-deck look, distinguished by a ribbon of fresh-air ventilation, eight-inch touch-screen and controls that protrude above the floor console. The transmission switches extend horizontally below the air vents. The base Corsair uses a 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, while a 280-horsepower 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder is optional. Both connect to eight-speed automatic transmissions. All-wheel-drive is available with the 2.0, but standard with the 2.3. There’s literally lots (a few tons, actually) to love about the Navigator if you’re looking for Titanic-sized luxury with cavernous passenger and stowage space. Both it and the equally large Ford Expedition share similar weight-saving aluminum skins, but the Navigator’s twin-turbocharged V-6 outguns the Expedition’s engine by 75 horsepower. Both also are equipped with 10-speed automatic transmissions that direct torque to the rear, or to all four wheels. Physically, the Navigator and the extendedlength Navigator L adopt grilles that are similar to the rest of the Lincoln lineup. Buyers will find plenty of standard and optional trick stuff, including laminated side glass for a quieter cabin, “speed-dependent” adaptive headlights that spread their glow over a wider area at lower velocities, and a customizable cargomanagement system designed to keep gear securely in its place. Front-seat passengers can be treated to 30-way power-adjustable chairs with heating, cooling and massage functions. Last, but far from least, you can order a 20-speaker premium audio system.

Extended-length Coach Door Editions added for 2020 — Ford’s upscale division is going all out to prove it can build a large, luxurious sedan to rival the best from Germany, Japan, England, plus the brand from across the street: Cadillac. From the front, the Continental looks similar to the smaller MKZ sedan. Standard content includes power door handles that delicately bow out from beneath the windows, and an optional all-glass panoramic sunroof. Lincoln claims the front seats were inspired by those found in executive jets, and are adjustable up to 30 ways. Both front and rear seats can be ordered with heating, cooling and massage functions as well as a rear bench seat that also reclines. Base-V-6 and optional turbocharged-V-6 Continentals can be ordered with all-wheel-drive, but it’s standard with the available 400-horsepower twin-turbo V-6. For 2020, Lincoln will build a limited number of Coach Door Continentals that have been stretched by six inches and have rear-hinged rear doors similar to those found in early 1960s Continentals.

From trucks to crossovers, several manufacturers will offer road test opportunities around the Phoenix Convention Center Thursday, Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day) through Sunday, Dec. 1. The auto show will feature nearly 500 of the newest vehicles, as well as exotics, racing simulators, new technologies and more. Licensed drivers will have the opportunity to test brakes, shift gears and get a feel for the handling of their favorite vehicles from several manufacturers including:

2020 DODGE CHALLENGER

No significant changes for 2020 — There likely isn’t a more horsepowerhungry domestic car company than Dodge. For 2018, the drag strip-focused (but street-legal) Challenger Demon took center stage with 840 mind-blowing horsepower. For 2019, it was replaced with the 797-horsepower SRT Hellcat Redeye, which was made to take corners as well as it could accelerate in a straight line. The “regular” Hellcat model made 717 horses, up from 707 the previous year. The big buzzword for the Challenger is “widebody” (think Demon and Redeye), essentially fender flares that allow wider rubber for better traction. The Challenger R/T Scatback and Hellcat are now available in the widebody format. For something a bit tamer that you can drive in any weather, there is the Challenger SXT and GT, which are available with allwheel-drive. They get a 305-horsepower V-6 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. The rear-wheel-drive V-6 and 5.7-liter-V-8 Challengers returned unaltered, as does the 6.4-liter V-8 in the Challenger SRT 392. All V-8 models come with an electronically controlled active exhaust system that lets anyone near you know what’s under the hood. For 2020, there are new standard and optional wheels, modestly refreshed interior and new paint choices.

2020 HONDA CIVIC

• Engines (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (305); 5.7-liter V-8 (395); 3.0-liter V-6, turbodiesel (260) • Transmission: Eight-speed automatic Status: Turbo-diesel returns for 2020 — The 2019 model-year redesign of the Ram 1500 included plenty of features, performance and greater towing-and-hauling capabilities. Maximum payload and towing capacities increased to 2,300 and 12,750 pounds, respectively (previously 1,880 and 10,620). An optional air-suspension system can raise or lower ride height and keep the truck level when loaded. The extended-length Quad Cab and four-full-door Crew Cab bodies are the primary offerings, but Ram offers a regular-cab version for fleet customers. Engine availability consists of a 305-horsepower V-6 and a 395-horsepower V-8. Both use eight-speed automatic transmissions. The V-6’s torque temporarily increases by up to 90 pound-feet with a belt-drive 48-volt “eTorque” motor/generator. This mild-hybrid system replaces the traditional alternator and uses a lithium-ion battery to add power under hard acceleration. The same system adds up to 130 pound-feet of torque for the V-8, but it’s optional. The 2020 model year sees the return of the turbo-diesel V-6 (called EcoDiesel). Available in all trim lines, the Italy-built engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, and provides a max towing capacity of 12,560 pounds.

STATUS: Styling changes for hatchback and Si models — The current Civic lineup has only been around for a short while, but that hasn’t stopped Honda from providing regular updates. For the 2020 model year, the Civic hatchback and the sporty Si receive new front and rear designs. The Si should also be a bit snappier when accelerating, owing to a slightly higher (numerically) gear ratio. The range of engines begins with a 2.0-liter fourcylinder and an optional turbocharged 1.5 for the base sedan and coupe. The base hatchback gets the turbo. The Si sedan and coupe run with a punchier version of the 1.5, while the Type R hatchback gets a 306-horsepower turbocharged 2.0. The Type R comes with a giant rear wing, roofline “vortex generators” that help reduce drag, and fender-filling 20-inch wheels. If you’re unfamiliar with manual transmissions, note that both the Si and Type R come only with six-speed stick shifts.

2020 GENESIS G90

• Transmission: Continuously variable (CVT) STATUS: Hybrid model introduced for 2020; base 2.4-liter engine is gone — The fifth-generation CR-V continues its bar-raising ways in the compact-utility segment with the introduction of a gasoline-electric hybrid. Although not the first such model in its class — the Toyota RAV4 hybrid has been around for a while — the CR-V Hybrid should benefit from the fact that the gasoline model has been tops in sales for the past two decades. The hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors that make a net 212 horsepower. That compares with the gasoline CR-V’s 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 190 horses. (Note that the former base non-turbo 2.4-liter fourcylinder is no longer available.) The Hybrid’s battery is positioned beneath the cargo floor, which allows the 60/40 rear seat to fold flat for extra storage space. Both powerplants are connected to continuously variable transmissions. Front-wheel-drive is standard with gasoline-engine CR-Vs, while an upgrade to all-wheel-drive is a relatively affordable option. The Hybrid gets standard AWD. Also standard for all CR-Vs is Honda Sensing, which includes active-safety technology such as emergency braking.

• Layout: Rear- /all-wheeldrive The flagship sedan of Hyundai’s premium division is no longer a hangover from its past life as the Hyundai Equus. From a styling perspective, the G90 is as buttoned-down and limoed-up as they come, so much so that the competing Lexus LS or Mercedes-Benz S-Class appear absolutely radical by comparison, at least when viewed from the side or the rear. The only bright spots are the dominating multi-sided V-shaped grille and the headlight pods that are each split by a thin band of LED running lights extending into the fenders. The interior is far more dramatically styled with a 12.3-inch touch-screen integrated into the dashboard (no pop-up-style tablets here). Although the bodywork is new, the G90 retains the previous proportions and propulsion systems. The base V-6 is rated at 365 horsepower, while a 420-horsepower V-8 is optional. Both powerplants are equipped with eight-speed transmissions and can be hooked to all-wheel-drive. The complete list of G90 standard features includes virtually every convenience accessory and active safety technology imaginable.

The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 finds new ways to deliver on an automotive concept older than a century: the pickup truck. This year, the GMC adds to its roster a turbodiesel inline-6 that’s more refined, new trailer cameras, and a handful of added trim levels. The 2020 Sierra gets a 5.6 with an asterisk: Fuel economy ratings aren’t yet in and may change this year thanks to a more widely available 10-speed automatic. That score is likely to fall a little, trucks are hardly known for their fuel efficiency. The lineup for the GMC Sierra 1500 is wide and deep, pack sunscreen and a snack. The 2020 Sierra 1500 is available in base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali versions. Five engines, three transmissions, and two driveline configurations complement three cab options, three bed options, and endless options. In short: the GMC Sierra 1500 can be any flavor you like.

The 2020 Porsche Cayenne is one of the few SUVs that can rival a high-performance sports car in handling and acceleration capability. This year’s Cayenne pushes the sports-car theme even harder with the addition of a so-called coupe body style that sacrifices some practicality for a more car-like profile. The Cayenne Coupe rides on the same wheelbase as the regular Cayenne, so legroom and cabin storage are unaffected. But the chopped roof that gives the Cayenne Coupe a sleeker look also cuts into rear headroom and the cargo area. Moreover, the coupe’s driver-centric emphasis carries over to the seating configuration — a two-seat back row is standard, though a three-row bench seat is a no-cost option. What the coupe loses in usability, it gains in performance. A number of the Cayenne’s optional features are standard on the coupe, including an adaptive suspension system, the Sport Chrono package (which adds a more aggressive driving mode and launch control), and larger wheels with optional summer performance tires. Regardless of body style, the Cayenne is one of the most versatile SUVs on the market.

STATUS: Two models added for 2020 — The Macan is more than just a smaller-sized Cayenne, although its mostly aluminum skin is influenced by the larger model. Exterior styling received a mild makeover for 2019 and interior changes included a large 10.9-inch touch-screen and two rows of switchgear for various climate and seat-adjustment functions flanking the shifter. At the time, the only Macan available was the 248-horsepower four-cylinder model. For 2020, the Macan S arrives with a turbocharged V-6 that delivers 100 more horses, while the new Macan Turbo — an odd choice of names since all Macans come with turbocharged engines — makes 434 horsepower and 406 poundfeet. The Turbo’s engine is downsized to 2.9 liters from previous Turbo model’s 3.6 liters, but horsepower climbs by 34. The Turbo can sprint to 60 mph from rest in 4.3 seconds, while the S takes 5.1 seconds and the base Macan needs 6.3. A seven-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission is standard across the board. Also standard is Porsche’s all-wheel-drive system that can direct up to 100 percent of the engine’s output to the front or rear wheels, or from side to side as necessary.

STATUS: Unchanged for 2020 — The redesigned all-wheeldrive Panamera still looks like its predecessor, although the makeover significantly improved the big hatchback-sedan’s looks by smoothing out the chunky rear roof section. At the same time, the cabin was also reworked, including the installation of a Cinemascope-sized touch-screen that oversees the infotainment, communications and climate-control systems. The Panamera is available in 21 model designations and in three body styles, including a number of regular-wheelbase models, an extendedwheelbase (by six inches) Executive version and regular-wheelbase Sport Turismo wagon. The latter comes with a stretched roofline and a rear opening that’s more steeply sloped. The base engine is a 440-horsepower twin-turbocharged V-6 while a 550-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 is optional. In the mix are two separate plug-in hybrid systems that deliver 462 and 680 horsepower, and up to 30 miles of electric range. All models are hooked to eight-speed automatic transmissions with paddle shifters.

• Layout: Front- /allwheel-drive The eight-passenger Palisade replaces the Santa Fe XL, and is Hyundai’s biggest and boldest entry since the long-gone Veracruz model. Compared to the Santa Fe XL, the Palisade is longer, wider and wheelbase-ier, and is similar in size to competitors such as the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Toyota Highlander and others with three rows of seats. To (somewhat) match the Palisade’s aggressive exterior, there’s a robust 3.8-liter V-6 with 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. The engine and stout chassis help give the Palisade a 5,000-pound towing capacity. A Hyundai-designed eight-speed automatic is the sole transmission. The available all-wheel drive system has Normal, Sport (sends more torque to the rear wheels), Snow (varies torque between the left and right wheels for increased traction) and Smart (eco) settings. As well, the AWD’s locking differential helps traction in slippery conditions. Among a lengthy options list is an intercom system that lets those in back communicate with the front row, and Rear Occupant Alert that detects movement inside the Palisade after it has been locked from the outside, which causes the horn to honk and an alert to be sent to the driver’s smart phone.

2020 JEEP GLADIATOR

You might think that Hyundai would have already plugged every possible niche there is in the utility-vehicle category, but the automaker has (at least) one more trick up its sleeve. The Tiny Venue slots below the Kona in the lineup, but, like the slightly larger Nissan Kicks, it isn’t available with allwheel-drive. It does come with a thrifty 1.6-liter four-cylinder, rated at 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for the base SEL trim, while a continuously variable transmission is optional, but standard with the premium SE. Base equipment includes an eight-inch display plus an assortment of collision-avoiding dynamic-safety technology. Among the options, many of which can be found in the SE, are roof rails, alloy wheels, navigation system, sunroof, premium audio system and blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Two-tone paint, something that the Nissan Kicks also offers, can be ordered for the Venue.

2020 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY SPORT

Major changes for 2020 — This seven-passenger utility vehicle is built off a new structure that’s reportedly 13-percent stiffer (and also quieter) than the previous model. The base Discovery Sport’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine — designed and built by Jaguar Land Rover — is rated at 246 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque (previously 237/251). Optional is a 286-horsepower (295 pound-feet) four-cylinder assisted by 48-volt electric motor/generator. All-wheel-drive is standard with both engines. Exterior changes are limited to a new nose, grille and headlights, and the interior has new seats, floor console and instrument panel. All trims come with hill-descent control (uses engine braking to prevent downhill runaway situations), hill-start assist (to prevent rolling backward down a hill) and trailer sway control. On the options list is ClearSight Ground View, which displays a 180-degree live stream of the undercarriage on the touchscreen. This helps drivers navigate obstacles, such as rocks and tree stumps.

2020 JEEP WRANGLER • Engine (h.p.): 3.6-liter V-6 (285); 3.0-liter V-6, turbo-diesel (260)

The four-door Wrangler Unlimited spawned the Gladiator pickup that delivers greater hauling and towing capacities. In designing the Gladiator, Jeep built a new and stronger frame that’s more than 30 inches longer than the Unlimited’s. Wheelbase was also increased by about 20 inches. Behind the second-row seat is a five-foot-long box capable of transporting up to 1,600 pounds. Trailering capacity with the proper package tops out at 7,650 pounds. As with other Wranglers, the Gladiator’s removable doors, hood, fenders, tailgate and fold-down windshield frame are made of aluminum. The steel hardtop can be unbolted and replaced with an optional folding soft-top, or with a hardtop with dual removable roof panels. A sliding rear-window is standard for either top. The Gladiator’s 285-horsepower V-6 will be familiar to Wrangler fans, but a V-6 turbo-diesel option with 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque will become available for 2020. A six-speed manual transmission or optional eight-speed automatic can be harnessed to the V-6, while the automatic is standard with the turbo-diesel. Command-Trac four-wheel-drive, which is standard with the Sport and Overland, uses a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing.

• Layout: Front-wheeldrive

Turbo-diesel engine added for 2020 — Redesigned for the 2018 model year, the Wrangler was lengthened by about 2.5 inches, while the wheelbase grew by an inch. The four-door Wrangler Unlimited gained roughly 3.5 inches and 2.5 inches, respectively. A 285-horsepower V-6 continued as the base engine, while an optional 270-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder became optional. The turbo’s partial-hybrid eTorque electric motor assists the engine when launching from a stop and captures energy when the Wrangler is coasting. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with either powerplant, while an eight-speed automatic is optional with the V-6, but standard with the turbo. Arriving for the 2020 model year is an optional 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel that makes 260 horsepower. The entry-level Range Rover is the epitome of off-roader coolness and, fortunately, the second-generation model has retained that swagger. The sloping roofline returns, but the grille is more expressive and the fenders are flared out, especially at the front. With the Evoque’s minimal front and rear overhangs and ample ground clearance, chances are you won’t get hungup over uneven terrain or become stuck in sand or mud. The base Evoque engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 246 horsepower, up nine over the 2019 model. The R-Dynamic trim’s turbo 2.0 adds 50 more horsepower for a total of 296, assisted by a 48-volt electric starter/generator. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. The standard all-wheel-drive system has an electronically controlled center differential that varies the torque between the front and rear wheels, depending on where the grip is greatest. The RX has been a trendsetter since it first turned a wheel for the 1999 model year, and the current fourth-generation model is no different. Passengers in the RX 350 and RX 450h hybrid are treated to cabins with plenty of rear-seat room and space for their gear. You can also opt for the extendedlength RX 350L that adds a two-place third-row seat. Lexus stretched the RX by more than four inches to make this happen, but the folding bench is likely more kid- than adult-friendly. The RX 350’s V-6 produces 295 horsepower, while an eight-speed automatic transmission directs power to the front wheels or, optionally, all four. The all-wheel-drive RX 450h hybrid functions with a 259-horsepower V-6, but combined with three electric motors/generators, it makes 308 horsepower. An optional F Sport trim package’s suspension constantly adjusts the dampers according to road and driving conditions. For 2020, all RX models receive new touchscreens and slight modifications to the front and rear styling.

Mazda is introducing its fourth such model: The CX-30 slots between the compact CX-3 and midsize CX-5. Why is not called the CX-4, then? Apparently Mazda already has a CX-4 elsewhere in the world and wants to avoid confusion. The CX-30 appears to have blended the best of both tall wagons plus a bit of the Mazda3’s looks for good measure. Because the CX-30 isn’t arriving until early 2020, there’s no confirmation yet regarding powertrains, although a possibility is Mazda’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition powerplant. It works somewhat like a diesel engine but instead burns gasoline and uses spark plugs during startup and hard acceleration. It’s expected to be a real fuel miser. Also expected is a base 186-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

2020 MERCEDES-BENZ E CLASS COUPE

Mercedes-Benz provides the latest luxury and safety content in an expanding number of trim levels for its equally expanding list of patrons. The current 10thgeneration E class, available in sedan, coupe, wagon and cabriolet (convertible) body styles, showcases several standard and available advanced features, some of which are beginning to appear on other M-B models. The E350 runs with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower, which is up 15 from the 2019 model. Next up, the E450’s V-6 puts out 362 horsepower. Atop the chain, the AMG E53 operates with a turbocharged inline-six-cylinder rated at 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, assisted by a 48-volt starter/generator located between the engine and the transmission. It delivers nearly instant boost to the turbo and contributes an additional 21 horsepower. A ninespeed automatic transmission is standard.

Available as midsize utility vehicle or a gorgeous hatchback coupe, the GLE is on the receiving end of new sheet metal. The wagon also gains more than three inches between the front and rear wheels, which is enough for an available third-row seat. The GLE 350, in rear- and all-wheel-drive, comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 255 horsepower, a gain of 14 from the previous model. As with other M-B vehicles, the standard dual touch-screens show necessary dashboard and multimedia info without the use of buttons or rotary dials. The GLE 450 4Matic steps up with 362-horsepower turbocharged six-cylinder and it gets E-Active Body Control. Using a 48-volt electrical system (called EQ Boost), it constantly adjusts the four dampers (shock absorbers) for a smoother ride and reduced body lean during cornering. Under hard braking, it also keeps the nose of the vehicle from diving. The EQ Boost motor/generator also runs the various ancillary components (instead of a traditional belt drive doing the job) as well as the available air suspension. EQ Boost contributes 21 of the 362 horsepower. Lastly, the GLE 580 4Matic wagon combines a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 with EQ Boost to produce 483 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.

The one and only engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls is also standard. The optional all-wheel-drive’s control modes allow adjustment of the transmission and steering settings, according to driver preference and road conditions. The cabin’s comfortable seats, excellent visibility and plenty of first- and second-row legroom and headroom are also plusses. There’s obviously more overall cargo volume than in the previous Tiguan, but not as much as in the Honda CR-V. The base S FWD model (add $2,200 for AWD) comes with plenty of equipment, including a 6.5-inch touch-screen, roof rails and a sliding, reclining and split-folding second-row bench. Upper trims can also be augmented with an R-Line grouping with sporty interior/ exterior designs and big 20-inch wheels.

Count on a price range of $20,000-$26,000, depending on the chosen trim level, once the new Sentra goes on sale.

STATUS: Unchanged for 2020 — Kicks is urban slang for a cool pair of running shoes, but in this case it’s also about having fun behind the wheel. Visually, Nissan’s signature V-Motion grille design is in play, as are “floating” rear roof pillars that appear to be scaled-down versions of those designed for the larger Murano wagon and Maxima sedan. The Kicks’ four-cylinder engine produces a modest 125 horsepower and 115 pound-feet of torque and is linked to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Since it uses the same platform as the Nissan Versa sedan, the Kicks doesn’t offer all-wheel-drive. The base model S comes with a seven-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, pushbutton start, roof rails, automatic emergency braking and forward-collision warning. The mid-grade SV adds climate control, remote engine start, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, Apple CarPlay and Android infotainment, and 17-inch alloy wheels (16-inch steel wheels are standard). The top-end SR is equipped with LED headlights, upgraded exterior and faux-leather interior trim. There’s also a 360-degree aroundview camera and an eight-speaker Bose-brand Personal Plus sound system with built-in headrest speakers for the driver.

2020 NISSAN ROGUE

The Nissan Rogue is a major contender in the compact wagon segment, competing in the same league as the Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota RAV4, to name only a few. Along with providing plenty of passenger comfort plus a fair amount of cargo space, the Rogue is also easy on the eyes. The the sole powerplant is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that puts out 170 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. It’s mated to a continuously variable transmission that has a Sport mode for snappier performance. All three trim levels — S, SV and SL — can be ordered with all-wheel-drive. The top two trims have standard dynamic-safety technologies found under the Safety Shield 360 label. As well, the Rogue SL gets ProPilot Assist that can maintain the vehicle in the correct lane and at a safe distance from the vehicle ahead with minimal driver involvement. Due to slow sales, the Rogue Hybrid is not available for the 2020 model year.

Soft demand for four-door family sedans hasn’t stopped the category leaders from continually upping their game. Nissan totally reengineered the Altima for 2019, with new skin highlighted by a dramatic grille. Although a similar size to the previous version, the new car’s wheelbase was extended by two inches. The engine lineup consists of a base 188-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, while the optional 248-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder has a unique variable-compression-ratio design. Under light loads, cylinder compression increases to aid fuel efficiency, but during more aggressive throttle applications the compression is mechanically decreased (by slightly changing the length of the connecting rods) so that more turbocharger boost can be added. The result is a seemingly contradictory blend of greater horsepower and reduced fuel consumption. Both powerplants are connected to continuously variable transmissions.

The automaker’s previous full-size-utility effort, the Tribeca, was an ultimately unsuccessful attempt at cracking a segment dominated by Chevrolet, Ford, Toyota, Honda and others. Following a five-year category absence, the built-inIndiana Ascent joined the seven-passenger ranks for the 2019 model year. This time, Subaru has created a roomier structure for up to eight adultsized passengers. A second-row bench seat is standard, but it can be swapped for optional high-back chairs that slide fore and aft to improve access to the third row. In back there’s sufficient space behind the rearmost seat for a reasonable amount of luggage, groceries and other cargo. The Ascent runs with a 260-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The accompanying continuously variable transmission has eight “steps” that can be manually controlled by paddle shifters located on the steering wheel. Subaru claims the Ascent can travel up to 500 miles between fuel stops, thanks to a large gas tank and a fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg in combined city/highway driving. That range will shrink if you take advantage of the maximum 5,000-pound towing capability.

2020 SUBARU FORESTER

• Drivetrain: All-wheeldrive STATUS: Major updates for 2020 — The Outback wagon is kin to the Legacy sedan, and for the 2020 model year both get new engines, platforms and suspension components. Of course, being a wagon, the Outback goes its own way in terms of styling, but except for a more distinctive front end there’s nothing too radical to be found in the way of change. It’s slightly longer now, with most of the gain used to increase rear-seat room. Getting under way begins with a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. That’s a bit more punch than the outgoing car and fuel economy improves slightly. Also new is a turbocharged version of the 2.5 with 260 horses and 277 pound-feet. This engine, which originated with the larger Subaru Accent, is also installed in the Legacy sedan. One of the Outback’s prime selling features is the standard all-wheel-drive system with Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring. It applies light brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn, which aids vehicle stability. Note that Subaru’s EyeSight active-safety-technology suite is standard, but it doesn’t include all the tricks. You’ll have to pay more for reverse automatic braking, distracted-driver intervention and headlights that pivot as the Outback turns.

This off-road capable model is a close relation to the Subaru Impreza, but the Crosstrek has more ground clearance, unique bumpers, roof rails, protective side cladding and a rear spoiler. The car comes with an Impreza-based 152-horsepower 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine backed by a six-speed manual transmission or an optional continuously variable unit (CVT) with paddle shifters and seven preset steps/ratios. Manual-trans models comes with Incline Start Assist: When the Crosstrek is stopped on an uphill incline, the system briefly holds the car while the driver’s right foot moves to the gas pedal from the brake. Subaru’s standard all-wheel-drive setup maintains a 60:40 front:rear torque split, but automatically directs up to 100 percent to the front or back as needed. The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) — a mid-2019 addition — uses electrical components supplied by Toyota along with the regular Crosstrek’s four-cylinder to make a net 148 horsepower. The hybrid can run up to 65 mph on battery power alone and travel up to 17 miles. The total electric/gasoline range is a claimed 480 miles.

2020 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER

If the Sienna minivan doesn’t appeal to you for various family-type duties, then perhaps the fourth-generation Highlander should be on your radar. This family bus has been redesigned and enlarged and now provides more stowage and passenger space across three rows of seats. Up to eight people will enjoy a well-appointed cabin and a comfortable ride, traits that have always been Highlander hallmarks. The previous 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine is out, but the 3.5-liter V-6 is carried over with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque. A brand new 240-horsepower hybrid power team consists of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine plus two electric motors. That’s less than the previous hybrid’s 306-horsepower output, but in return you get greater (by a claimed 17 percent) fuel efficiency. Both powertrains can be had with front- or optional all-wheel-drive. Even with a full house of people and their belongings, the Highlander can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is plenty for hauling a modestly sized travel trailer or a boat. Toyota provides a number of key crash-avoiding dynamic-safety features as standard equipment for all Highlander trim levels.

The Camry underwent major surgery for the 2018 model year, with nearly all the car’s bits and pieces produced from fresh molds and stampings. Toyota’s designers extended the length and width only slightly, but increased the wheelbase by three inches for greater legroom. The roofline was also lowered slightly as were the seating positions, resulting in a lower center of gravity. The body was attached to a stiffer platform that’s 30 percent less prone to twisting, which improves both ride and handling qualities. For the 2020 model year, the Camry literally sports a new TRD (Toyota Racing Development) trim level that includes a sport-tuned suspension, larger brakes, special (louder) exhaust system, black wheels and lower-body aero cladding. The TRD package is available only with the available 301-horsepower V-6. The base engine is a 203-horsepower four-cylinder (206 horsepower in XSE models). For both, an eight-speed automatic transmission transmits torque to the front wheels. The 208-horsepower Camry Hybrid has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine and a 118-horsepower electric motor.

2020 SUBARU CROSSTREK • Base price (incl. destination): $25,500

STATUS: Unchanged for 2020 — Subaru’s best-selling model receives praise for its tough-when-it-needs-to-be attitude, passenger comfort and reliability. On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive system operates virtually unnoticed. But when required, which is frequently in snow-belt regions, the Forester’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. Although the current model appears similar to the previous Forester, it’s built atop Subaru’s stronger and lighter Global platform. There’s sufficient distance between the front and rear wheels for plenty of legroom, while the tall roofline and a low-rise load floor make for generous storage space with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque and operates through a continuously variable transmission that administers power to all four wheels. Subaru’s optional Eyesight driver-assistance technology package includes lane-keeping assist and can also be ordered with automatic reverse braking that stops the car to avoid hitting obstacles when backing up.

STATUS: New TRD model for 2020 — The fifth-generation RAV4 that was introduced for 2019 is literally new from the wheels up, starting with a more rigid platform and a lower and wider profile. A 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine links to an eightspeed automatic transmission. The all-wheel-drive hybrid model with an electric motor for the front and rear axles also uses the 2.5 along with a continuously variable transmission. It’s rated at 40 mpg in combined city/highway driving. For non-hybrids, an optional all-wheel-drive system sends half the engine power to the rear wheels and can direct 100 percent of that torque to either outside wheel when turning — called torque vectoring — which increases stability. The system also disengages the rear wheels under normal driving situations, which reduces drag on the system to save fuel. The new RAV4 TRD uses the same AWD system plus a retuned off-road suspension and all-terrain rubber. Also included is a darkened nose, matte-black 18-inch wheels and added bolstering for the front seats.

2020 TOYOTA SUPRA

For those who are unaware, Toyota and BMW cooperated in designing both the Supra coupe and the 2020 Z4 roadster, respectively. The cars look completely different, of course, with the Supra takings its unorthodox styling cues from the far more exaggerated FT-1 concept car. The genesis for the collaboration, aside from sharing development costs, was Toyota’s desire to stick with an inline six-cylinder engine that has been a Supra hallmark ever since the first model arrived for the 1979 model year. It just so happens that straight-sixes are a BMW specialty. For Toyota , the 3.0-liter powerplant makes 335 horsepower. For the Z4, it makes 382. Both get eight-speed automatic transmissions with paddle shifters. Toyota claims the combination can propel the Supra to 60 mph from rest in 4.1 seconds, which is quick for a 3,400-pound sports car. Drivers can dial in a Sport operating mode that alters the throttle, transmission, steering, exhaust and dampers (shocks) to more aggressive settings. The absence of a manual gearbox might seem sacrilege to some, but rumor has it that one will be hitched to a turbo four-cylinder base engine that could become available in a year or two.

2020 VOLVO XC40

New for 2019 and unchanged for 2020; an electric version arrives later — With plenty of ground clearance, Volvo’s smallest wagon can tackle more than just city streets and road construction. The XC40 bears a strong resemblance to other Volvos, while the interior is the epitome of classic Swedish modern. A 12.3-inch touch-screen dominates a dashboard that features unusual vertically shaped air vents. The XC40’s well-bolstered front chairs should provide much comfort and joy, particularly on long journeys. A 187-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter fourcylinder engine is standard in the front-wheel-drive T4, while the all-wheel-drive T5 uses a 248-horsepower version. Both engines are connected to eight-speed automatic transmissions. All models come with climate control, power tailgate and a power driver’s seat. At the top end, the T5 R-Design has dual-zone climate control, premium leather seat covers, and voice-activated navigation. The R-Design also gets a sport suspension. Optional is a panoramic sunroof and premium Harmon Kardon-brand audio.

2020 VOLVO XC90

STATUS: Carryover for 2020 — The midsize V60 wagon and S60 sedan were new for 2019, joining the five-passenger XC60 wagon that arrived for 2018. That model is three inches shorter than the V60 — with similar interior volume, however — and has 2.5 more inches of ground clearance. All three 60-series models use Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture platform, which is claimed to add rigidity for better ride and handling qualities, while also providing improved crash protection. The base T5 engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The T6 is a supercharged and turbocharged version of the 2.0, rated at 316 horsepower and 295 pound-feet. At lower engine speeds, the supercharger provides the boost, but above 3,000 rpm the turbocharger joins in. Atop the performance ladder is the T8 AWD plug-in hybrid that is standard in the premium Polestar Engineered trim. It’s rated at 400 horsepower and 495 pound-feet. All but the base trim levels contain a full range of crash-preventing active-safety technologies under Volvo’s Pilot Assist banner.

The second-generation XC90 differs from the original in every way, including a 250-pound weight reduction despite a similar size. The interior’s Scandinavian design theme includes natural wood inlays, supple leather seats and a seriously cool glass-crystal shifter. The T6 model has a supercharged and turbocharged “Drive-E” four-cylinder that uses the turbo for top-end power and the beltdriven supercharger to help out at lower engine revs. Additional pep is available from the all-wheel-drive R-Design model. Its 400-horsepower T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor to assist the gasoline engine. That increases output to a net 400 horsepower, compared with 250 for the T5 model and 316 for the T6. The hybrid can also operate for up to 25 miles on electric power alone and achieve up to 53 mpg in the city and 54 on the highway. The T6 and the T8 hybrid each use eight-speed automatic transmissions. Available options include more activesafety content plus an air-suspension that keeps the Volvo on the level when loaded with people and/or cargo.
